I've just begun a tree for my friend. Randers Henderson Cravatt is her Great Grandfather. I also have his Roll number. Would enjoy corresponding with you. It's my first time to search through the Indian Rolls and thought you might give me some pointers.
paco12348@yahoo.com

Although I don't know or remember too much more since he passed when I was little. Which is why I was doing my own search when I came across this post.

The Chickasaw woman's name is Na Hom Ti Mah. Her father was of the Koi or Ishpanie clan which were chieftain clans and her mother was of the Kusha clan. She was my great great great great grandmother, born in 1780 in Alabama. She married Jean Cravatt who was 40 years her senior. Their son William Cravatt was born in 1795 when she was only 15 years old. William begot Henderson Cravatt. Henderson begot Forbus D. Cravatt on April 23rd, 1868 and Forbus begot Daisy Josephine Cravatt my grandmother born March 8, 1905. My family has lived in Pontotoc and Johnston Counties Oklahoma since the Chickasaw people were moved from the southeast to the Indian Territory.

Elsie Cravatt Harris

I am related to an Elizabeth Harris whose father was a Daniel Harris. I have no information about her birthday, other than on all her census' it states she was born in New York and her parents were both from New York. However, when her grand-daughter, Mary, applied for citizenship in the Choctaw nation, she indicated that her mother was 1/4 Indian (Martha Danforth Wyman) and her grandmother was 1/2 Indian from Mississippi from a Daniel Harris. She, Mary, has an affidavit signed by Dock Dunford stating that Daniel Harris was in fact Choctaw. The only Daniel Harris that I have been able to find is married to an Elsie Cravatt, who was the daughter of John Cravatt and a Chickasaw wife.
I don't know if anyone has anything else that I could use to verify any or all of this information?

Roscoe Cole was a white resident among the Choctaw. Married about 1770 to Shumaka, adopted by the Choctaw after the destruction of her native Chakchiuma tribe.
Roscoe was originally from Virginia, probably Goochland County.
Roscoe was later killed by Shawnee Indians.
He and Shumaka had several children, among them was Rebecca who married John Cravatt.

John Cravatt and Rebecca ( considered a Choctaw ) had two daughters, Nancy and Rebecca, both of whom were wives of Louis LeFleur, a white trader.

I have no indication as to when Rebecca Cole Cravatt may have died, but John later remarried, this time to a Chickasaw woman and had several more children. John and his family arrived in the west with a party of Chickasaws on March 8, 1837.

In 1839, his second wife was listed on the census, showing that she was the head of a household in which were 2 females under age 10, 1 female betwen 20 -50, and 1 female over 50, and 1 male between 20 - 50. She then owned 3 slaves. Apparantly John Cravatt had died by this census.

Check the following sources:

HISTORY OF TEH CHICKASAW, CHOCTAW AND NATCHEZ INDIANS, by H. B. Cushman, published 1899, pages 187, 190, 342, 343

WHO WAS WHO AMONG THE SOUTHERN INDIANS 1698 - 1907, by Don Martini, published 1998, pages 174.

Chickasaw Emigration Records (microfilm) roll 144, frame 140, 321, 347

Choctaw Reserves (microfilm) roll 191, frame 683
roll 189, frame 415

Harris Family Bible , Oklahoma Historical Society ( Emily Cravatt Harris, daughter of John Cravatt and Chickasaw wife)

Children by this second wife are found in the 1839 census of the Chickasaw as well.

Son Charles is in the 1831 census before moving west, then in 1839 he and his family are listed on the census taken in the west. He was listed on this census as half white and he had a family of his own in 1839.

Son Jefferson was shown as half white in the 1847 census in the west along with his family. In 1857-60 he appears on the annuity rolls.

Son Thomas was living in the west at Tishomingo (I.T.) as late as 1902.

Daughter Emily married Daniel Harris in 1828. By 1839 the Chickasaw census shows Emily and her family in the west along with three slaves. In 1847 Emily is shown as half white and head of her household, including 17 slaves, apparantly Daniel Harris had died. In some records Emily's name is listed as "Elsie", but still shown as John Cravatt's daughter by his Chickasaw wife.

Kay please contact me regarding researching the Gravatt/Cravatt families. I am researching the Cravatt family of Virginia and Kentucky, Green Co. Ky. I suspect the picture you have is of the Cravatt family who were full blood indians. Have you tried Google easy genealogy search, put in the name Cravatt, there is quite a lot of info online regarding the indian Cravatts, actually a mixture of Indian and french.
Linda we have corresponded before, I am Marilyn m Fair the Nancy Cravatt would have been my GGGG Grandmother. The marriage bond is a mess, what it actually means is that Elisha Lane and Mrs. Nancy Cravatt took out the bond for Elisha to marry Nancy Cravatt's granddaughter who was Nancy Mary Reed, her father being James Madison Reed. Mrs. Nancy Cravatt was the mother of Nelly Cravatt who married James Madison Reed in 1832 in Green Co. Ky. I have also heard the story that Nelly Cravatt was the half breed child of Nancy Cravatt and her captor indian. Very interesting but unproven. The Cravatts came from Virginia to Ky. but trying to find out who Nancy Cravatt's husband was has been near to impossible. Would you like to work together sometime to try and trace this Cravatt family? Just let me know. Thanks Marilyn M Fair via email mfair@kc.rr.com

Here is sworn testimony from Ft. Worth Federal Archives, FYI:

"Skullyville County
Choctaw Nation

In the matter of John Krebs who claims to be of Choctaw Blood. Mrs. Mary Burgevin and Caroline Bowman being duly sworn make the following statement

We are the daughters of Peggy Krebs who was the daughter of Fillecutcha. He was our grandfather and was a full blood Indian. Our grandmother was named Polly Cravatte and was by blood half Choctaw and half Chickasaw. My mother married Stephen Krebs. My mother had fifteen children. Among the members of family was one John Krebs. John Krebs married in the State of Mississippi and had several children, one named John Krebs Jr. who is the claimant here present. We knew him when he was born and recognized him when he came to this Country. His father died after the war somewhere in the State of Texas. This John Krebs is of Choctaw blood to our certain knowledge. The said John Krebs has been living in the Choctaw Nation for the period of 18 years and has been recognized a citizen of the Choctaw Nation and by occupation a farmer and has always been recognized a citizen before the County Court in the County of Skullyville, Choctaw Nation and has enjoyed all the rights and privileges of a citizen.

Mary Burgevin
Caroline Bowman

Sworn and subscribed before me this the 23 day of October 1893.

S.
Halito!
Margaret Fillecutcha/Fillecuthey was the daughter of Fillecutha/Fillecuthey ( Choctaw warrior/leader) and Polly Cravatt. It is rumored that Polly was the half sister to Greenwood Leflore. Margaret Fillecutha/Fillecuthey was married to Ettienne Stephen Krebs.
Margaret is my 4th g-grandmother. I have some more info that I found from different sites (Mississippi).
One site is the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. Email me if you are interested. Not enough room on here for the info.
In the book, Who Was Who Among the Southern Indians, by Martini, there is one short mention of what may be the ancestor you are looking for:

Page 232

FILLECUTCHY, POLLY - Choctaw, the great- niece of Chief Pushmataha. She lived on the north sid eof Selkpath Creek, 12 miles west of the Natchez Trace, in LeFlore's District, in 1831. She was allowed 640 acres, to include her home, by the 1830 treaty. She married Stephen Krebs.

page 377:

KREBS, STEPHEN - White resident among the Choctaw, was born at Mobile on December 23, 1786, the son of Hugo Daniel Krebs and Louisa Le Flore Krebs.

In 1850 he was living in Winston County, Mississippi, his household consisting of: Stephen, age 65, Margaret ( Polly Fillecutchy, great niece of Chief Pushmataha), age 46, Margaret, age 20, Sophia, age 18, Peter, age 15, Thomas, age 13, Caroline, age 11, William, age 8, Benjamin, age 7, Nancy, age 5, Isabella, age 3, and George, age 1. Other children included Lucy, Mary Ann, Reuben, Antoinette, and John William. One son, Stephen, married Mary Mann. A daughter, Mary Ann, married Louis Leflore.

Stephens mother, Louisa LeFlore was born in 1765, and was a sister to the trader, Louis LeFleur. She died in 1813. Stephen's father was (Hugo Daniel Krebs) was born September 23, 1754, the son of Hugo Ernest Krebs (1714 - 1776). Hugo Ernest was married to Mariana Chauvin.
Hope you get some clues here.

I haven't check the search results at ancestry.com, but at one time they showed him as being born in France - think the date was 1720. Nancy Cravat LeFlore is my 4gGrandmother, her son Forbis, 3gGrandfather, his daughter Matilda Elizabeth 2gGrandmother, her daughter Angeline Rebecca, GGrandmother and her daughter Ethel Matilda my cherished maternal grandmother. Haven't found anyone, though, who has additional information on Jean Cravat.
Angelyn

Joyce Wallace re Jean (John) Cravat

Sorry it took me so long to answer! Jean Cravat was born in Quebec about 1740. I don't know when he came to Mississippi, but he married Na-Hom-Tima of the Kusha Clan of Choctaws in 1769. They had 2 daughters, Nancy and Rebecca, both of whom married Louis LeFleur (now LeFlore) apparently in a Choctaw ceremony. The genealogist who prepared the pedigree chart for our family has Cravat spelled with two "T's", but then he has my name misspelled and there are other errors.
'Hope this helps you in your quest.
Angelyn

Joyce, according to Family Group Record given me by a genealogist, who incidentally, spells Cravat with a second "T", he has next to Wife: (Chickasaw) Nail - 494, born about 1780 in Chickasha Nation, Alabama Terr. (Wonder if that isn't supposed to be Chickasaw?) They had 5 children: Thomas born abt 1797, AL TERR; Jefferson abt 1799, AL Terr; William "Billy", no date listed, Ponotoc (think that might be Pontotoc) County, CN, Mississippi Terr; Charles, AL Terr. and Elsie, no DOB, AL Terr. Jean also had another Choctaw wife, name unknown, and they had a son Peter who was born in the Choctaw Nation East.
'Hope this is of use to you.
Angelyn

Do they let you copy the actual marriage licens at the court house or just can you get just the info from the library? Do you know about the article on Dr. Charles Moore in the Green Co Bio. It is in the library. I found it there last year.
If that is the correct name of the book they can tell you what it is. Do you have any pictures if the Lane family or any decendents?
Hey Twyla,
I have some photos of Lane family ancestors, and other information you might be interested in. How are you related to Nancy Gravatt?? Have you heard the story about the abduction by Indians and giving birth to a daughter by Nancy?? I tried to contact a lady by the name of Linda Keith, but the query she left here was old and her e-mail address turned out to be invalid now. I couldn't find your e-mail address listed anywhere here. Contact me direct at:
mikemaddox@angelfire.com.....let's get our heads together on this and see what we can come up with. I will reserve any further comments until we can establish direct contact. Talk to you soon :)

Linda,
I sure hope I haven't sent you this info already. I have answered SO many of these queries tonight I'm about half mixed up. Nelly Cravatt/Gravatt, daughter of Nancy Cravatt/Gravatt, married James Madison Reed on August 8, 1832 in Green County, KY. I have been searching for an Indian connection for years and years but never had much idea until I read your query!! Please contact me ASAP at: mikemaddox@angelfire.com and we'll share information. I want to know where you heard the legend about the Indian blood. I have a complete (near as I can find) family sheet on Elisha B. Lane. Elisha married Nancy Mary Reed, daughter of James Madison Reed and Nelly Gravatt/Cravatt, on July 10, 1845 in Green County, KY. I'm planning a trip back there this week. I wonder, could Nancy Cravatt, the older woman, have been kidnapped and raped by an Indian, thus producing the offspring Nelly Cravatt/Gravatt? Contatct me ASAP.

Are you related to either side and if so could you please let me know where the best place to find this specfic information-maybe I can determine which family of cravatts we are from. I have the names of Albert,Thomas James,Jane ,Lyman,Mulbery and a Imogene Cravatt all from this same lineage. Also wondering if Karen Cravatt that has inquired on this message board is related to the late Rev. *Jack" Henderson Cravatt? any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for any information about the chickasaw cravatts of oklahoma or mississippi. Possibily also from Canada. My fathers name is larry lee cravatt. His fathers name was henderson cravatt. Larry's mothers name was ada cathrine Foraker. Henderson's fathers name was Albert Cravatt.(full blood chickasaw). He was married to Clicy Folsom. That is as far back as I have gotten. Most of these Cravatts are from around the Sulphar, Oklahoma area. Any information you might have would really help. Thank you, Phillip
