Original Crawford Family Home, Craig's Creek.

Hi,

As told to me by my grandfather (having also been told by his grandmother): "this is the original home of the first Crawford's on Craig's Creek." As I have metioned to both Teddy and Dave, the photo was taken around 1860 and shows various members of my family in the front of the house. The style looks consistent with a mid 18th century construction date. In my opinion, this not John Crawford's home (d.1796) but rather his father's. His will shows that he received this farm from his father, so it would have been this earlier John Crawford who built the house.

I believe everyone is familiar with THIS will of John Crawford, SON of elder John Crawfod. Per 1999 msg by DonaldSmith247 he has knowledge of a 1781 PROBATED WILL of JOHN CRAWFORD whom I believe is the progenitor of many of the Craig's Creek Crawfords. I also believe he was deceased by March 1779 as suggested by a Crawford deed of that date.

Teddy Brock

Donald Smith.....I so hope you are still on this list. This is the first time I've seen an actual comment about elder John Crawford's will by someone who has seen it and may have it in their possession. It is not to be found at Fincastle courthouse.

Please contact me. Anyone else have this 1781 probated will of John Crawford of Botetourt, VA.? It would be very significant to conscientious researchers of this John Crawford who base their genealogy in facts, rather than others who seemingly draw names and dates out of thin air, with no substance.

email: trbrock@woh.rr.com

Thank you,
Teddy Brock

Justin,

Thank you for letting me know about this photo and, yes, I would love to have a copy. I spent a couple days researching in Fincastle in July and wish I knew of you then. I certainly could have benefited from having a certified Crawford descendant familiar with their history.

I have many questions for you which will best be done by direct email. Although I have proof of descent from Andrew Crawford who died in 1791, and circumstantial evidence to suggest he was the son of John, the will of John has not surfaced even though the 1796 will of his son, John Crawford, alludes to the existence of that document. There is a March 1779 deed that clearly states that John Crawford (presumed the elder) is deceased by that date. SOME people out there have confused the generations just because THEY HAVE THE SAME NAME.

For the record, Margaret Crawford (dau. of Andrew) married Elisha Vansandt and his sister, Sarah, married a James Crawford (NOT son of Andrew) and both couples moved to Fleming county, KY. They are both ancestral grandparents to me.

I am most anxious to hear from you. Thank you.

Teddy Brock
My email: trbrock@woh.rr.com

Teddy,

I emailed Dave Hicks regarding a photograph c.1850s I have of the original John Crawford House in Botetourt County, VA. The original appears lost to time, but fortunately a very old copy of the original remains in my possession. I am a direct descendant of this John Crawford, and various members of our family are photographed posing in front of the house.
My family, unlike many descendants I read of on here, remained in the area and we are still property owners near Oriskany, VA...a short distance from the John Crawford Home.
Perhaps you are interested in a copy of this photo? I am happy to send a scanned image, or, make an actual paper copy. To my knowledge, this is the only existing photo of the house.
Thanks,
Justin Crawford
Hi Tracy, Thank you for your post. Since William Crawford who married Elizabeth Harper, was married before 1772, he was probably born c1750 or earlier so he would be too old to be the same William whom you are searching for. But it seems possible they could be related.
Elizabeth Harper, was a daughter of Samuel Harper who died in York Co, PA in 1760. He is buried in the Great Conewago Church Cemetery near Gettysburg. The probate papers list daughter Elizabeth married to William Crawford. Does anyone have any information on this Crawford family? This William was possibly the same William Crawford who was named as a son and heir of Hugh Crawford of Berwick, York Co, PA 1779. We are trying to determine where William and Elizabeth lived and if they moved away from York County.

Your cousin Arden L. Crawford matches up perfectly with Jimmy Thurman Crawford. The two constitute Lineage 7, definitely pertaining to the R1b1b2 haplogroup. Since there are only two of them and not at all closely related to any other R1b lineages, you are probably a branch that stems from the Brysons, maybe from a Crawford heiress marrying a Bryson who then took the Crawford surname and whose children continued it. Of course the other possibility is an adoption or an illegitimate child fathered by a Bryson. That could have happened several centuries ago. You might want to trace where Brysons are from and where contact might have been made. However, there are also two Browns and a Strahan, so that the surname may have changed more than once. If you can trace your ancestry back to Scotland, you might want to look at the are you come from and see the distribution of these surnames. The Crawford surname would only definitely go back to the common ancestor of your two cousins. Whether or not it went back further would require some goo sleuth work to determine. Keep us up to date with what you find. We are looking for evidence of intrusion from other Y-DNA of non-Crawford males who married Crawford heiresses.

I'm sure it was exciting. Certainly has been for others of us, too.

JGDouglas,
Though there is no definitive way to identify your direct ancestor William, but a comparison between several cousins surnamed Crawford descended from the different Williams might make it more evident. Is your cousin in the Crawford surname project? If so, let me know who it is and I might be able to help you understand better what the Y-DNA results provide you. If he isn't, do have him join, because not only does he add to the over-all picture, but you might iidentify other related Crawfords through the project. Whether immediate or not, as new members sign up and results multiply, the picture becomes clearer. We have some 120 Crawford Y-DNA results to compare so far. It is a goodly number, though still just a minuscule number given the hundreds of thousands of Crawfords around the world. You are right, though, genealogy by paper trail is still necessary to confirm the identity of any specific ancestor. Check dates of birth, marriage and death, as well as spouses names in censuses and places of residence to try to differentiate between the several Williams in a same generation.

It depends on what kind of DNA testing you are getting. Both my husband and myself had testing done and I couldn't make much of it. I don't think very many people responded to this one company so we didn't match to anyone.

Then my husband was invited to give DNA for his Surname. The person in charge of getting Smelser's to test is very knowlegable about DNA and reading the results. There were lots of family members who tested and we were able to find some great answers. We are very happy about this testing.

Hope this helps
Sheila

Hello,

I found Retta's excellent 'father to son line' web page recently and would like to contact her about it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do it via her link on the page, so I thought I'd post a message here just in case she sees it. I hope that's okay.

I'm particularly interested to know what became of George Crawford (b 1620, Jordan Hill), just in case he's the first in my line of George's.

Anyway, Retta, if you're out there please reply or contact me at virginia_crawford@yahoo.com.

Thanks :)

Thank you for your interest, Dr Crawford. Yes, my cousin is in the Crawford surname group; FTDNA kit number is 72584. His deep clade test places him in the R1b1b2 haplogroup. Brysons are the prevailing yDNA match. My cousin and another more distant cousin are the only Crawfords who have shown up on that match list.

Five of us are working together in researching our Crawford family, concentrating on the 1700s and early 1800s. (It was fun when the DNA results came back and several of us who've been corresponding and exchanging information for years realized we really *are* cousins!) While we've done a fairly good job with the records in our ancestors' home counties, there's always more to be found in the court houses and libraries.

--John Douglas

My mother's Crawford ancestors were unknown beyond her gf, except his father was believed to be a William. I asked a male Crawford cousin to submit a sample, and a yDNA match proved that the Crawford family I had been researching is the right one. Now I know who my gggg-gf (the immigrant) was, and who his father in Antrim (and previously Ayrshire) was, but I'm still not completely sure which of the 1st cousins named William Crawford in my gg-gf's generation was my gg-gf! In short, yDNA can be a terrific tool, and I'm extremely grateful for it, but the old-fashioned tools of genealogy are still vital.

--John Douglas

Mary's surname
b. The parents of William Crawford (and any siblings)
c. The parents of Mary ?? (and any siblings)
d. Any siblings of Elizabeth Annett

but I will take any info offered

I can't find which churches they were associated with but one of Josephs daughters married under Anglican rites so they were probably not Catholic.

I have already done extensive searches on FamilySearch, GenCircles, GenesReunited, Ancestry.com and a number of other sites on the internet as well as general internet searches and everything seems to stop with the above mentioned.

Thanks
Debby
On their marriage certificate Jane's father name is Coulson but have now got stuck. I have a great photo of the Crawford brothers Charles, Fred, Percy, Cycil, Ernie, Stan and Reg. Philip was born 1921 married Hilda had a daughter Joan and died in 1994.
Hope some of this helps. Jan

We have been trying to find any Info on him after 1918 when he and wife lived in Zanesville,Oh Muskingum county. This is the last info we have on him, my Grandmother stated that he had vanished and had no idea where he went and we like to find out if possible to pass on to the family that is still living and fill in our family tree.

In my research of the Crawford name, I have come across A William Crawford born 1790 in Scotland married a Betsy (Elizabeth)maiden name unknown, Lived in Springfield, Erie County, PA acording to 1850 Census. One of his children was Samuel Crawford born 1825, same place, think he is my Great Grandfather. I've hit a brick wall at this point, unable to verify all of the above.
Tracy Crawford
trcraw4d@verizon.net
