Hello my name is James Creary, The Creary name is originally Irish, part of my family from County Cork. There is also a Jamacian connection to the family. Of course many Creary's moved on to England and then North America. Also many derivitives of the name Cleary, O'Cleary, McCreary, etc all related. My grandfather Charles Joseph Francis Creary born Dec. 1917 may have been 19th or 21st married Margaret Elnor( Her mother Charlotte from England ) My grandfather one of 6 children brothers John ( Oldest ) James ( Passed away during hurricane hazel in his forties ) sisters Helen, Kay ( Likely Kathleen she was called Kay ) Bessy ( Likely Elizabeth she was called Bessy ) My granmother had one brother Len apparently he liked banks. My grandfather went on to marry again having 2 boys Bruce and Brent Creary and a daughter Kathleen. That is what I know of the family name.

Folks,
I have my g-g-grandfather as being born in Ireland, but cannot find record of immigration - only naturalization papers. Any suggestions on how to find the origin of Jeremiah Creary born 1818 in Ireland, married to Mary Dewan, later living in Yates County, New York State?

My great grandfather was Joseph Creary Adey, son of John William Adey and Ann Creary (I believe this is the younger sister of Hannah, is this correct?) The census record I have lists Hannah's age as eight in 1861 but Ann wasn't born until later so she is not listed. In addition to Hannah it lists two of her brothers, Robert Creary (age 11) and John Creary (age 3) and a boarder at the time by the name of Wiliam Lathey.
After I posted the message before I found out it was Barrow-in-Furness. My great grandfather was from that area and had won a bike race in Sept of 1894 from the Barrow Cycling Club.
He worked as a ship yard supervisor. The Boags came to the US sometime around the turn of the century into NY but I don't yet know where.
Thanks forthe help with the location in England.
Dear Neil

Had a laugh about 'Barrel in Furnce'. I think what your looking for is 'Barrow-in-Furness'. There is a town of that name in England anyway. I am researching the Bogg name but mine don't seem to come from that area.

From the 1850s up to the 2nd world war my Bogg families were all living in Plumstead, Woolwich, Kent. Loads of them! Unfortunately my g-g-g-grandfather JOHN BOGG was in the army which means he moved about a lot which means I don't know where he was born or where he came from!

Frances

This is just a quick update, reflecting some information I found in the 1901 census for Toronto:

Patrick Creary (b. 1857 in US) m. Catherine Jane Owen (1865-aft. 1956)

Children:
John b. 1883 Ontario
Selma? b. 1885 Ontario
James b. 1887 Ontario
Edward b. 1890 Ontario
Ellen b. 1893 Ontario
William b. 1895 Ontario
Charles b. 1898 Ontario

At the time of the 1901 census, Patrick's sister-in-law Ellen Owen was also living with the family.

Hope that this connects to someone's line.

Regards,

Hi List,

I'm not a direct relation, but I found out some time ago that my great-grandfather's older sister married into the Creary Family. Catherine Jane (Owen) was born in Ontario around 1863 and married a Creary from the Toronto area. I don't know much else except that she was still alive in Toronto as late as 1956. I'm curious to learn a bit more about this Owen sister and have pictures of her siblings from the 1890's and 1900's that I'm willing to share.

I'm not sure. We think the Creary's may have come from Ireland to New York but we're not sure. My grandmother was from England. Her father worked as a supervisor in the ship building yard in an area called Barrel in Furnce? (Can't spell worth beans some days). The last name is Bogg or Boog. They moved to Canada and she married my grandfather. This was in the early 1900's.
So for what I know we may have been from England orginally.
Does any of this make sense?
Have a good day and chat with you soon.
