I am always leery when I see that in those early days someone marries another from so far away (re: a Davis from New York marrying John Creecy) Altho it is very possible, just consider the source of that information, was it cited or were other statements in that documenat sourced? Many years a go I attended an NGS conference and sat in a lecture about how many early colonists from the north settled in North Carolina. The theme was they came by sea down the coast looking for land. I attended because in my research of my Weston line (who married into Creecy much later) I found the naming patterns identical with the New England Westons. (I have yet to prove the connection).
I have no idea about the 5 brothers information. I do know that Levi came into NC about 1713. (I found Levi in Posquotank Co. NC as early as 1713 when he purchased 200 acres from Francis Hendricke (recorded 23 July 1713 Pasquotank Co. NC Record of Deeds Vol. A page 59. (Posq. Co. NC Rec. of Deeds). G.

Hello, I have a family tree that is Crockett-Creecy family tree that you may want to review. Our family is from Eastern NC (Northampton and Pasquotank Counties). We are the African-American side of the family, but I know there are many Anglo Creecy's as well. You are free to look at our tree and compare. I have a cousin who has an extensive database who is now helping to add to the tree.

Let me know if I can be of assistance to you

Carmen Crockett Smith

Re: Lemuel Creecy

I am descended from Nathan Creecy.

I am attempting to build a tree of the origin of the Creecy family to America, but it seems to be pretty difficult with the variations on the surname spelling in records, and the frequent repetition of given names down lines (Levi and Lemuel).

I have entered in the above information you provided here and it could make sense with my own research, but I can't say 100%. I had a John Creecy marrying a Catherine but I didn't know where they fit in the tree.

Based on your information, I would say that Nathan Creecy is first cousins with your Levi d. 1803 (John, Levi).

My information:

According to Richard Benbury Creecy in Grandfather Tales of North Carolina 1901 - 5 Creecy Brothers shipwrecked off of NC in 1680s - John, Levi, Job, Thomas, and Unknown who died in TN. (see my other post on this board)

Levi Creecy I d. 1734 - m. Elizabeth?
Issue:

i) John Harris? Creecy (this would be your above mentioned John, father of Levi III) m. Catherine (Davis of New York - not fully researched)
ii) Joseph Creecy m. Elizabeth? Issue: Frederick, Penelope
iii) Thomas Creecy
iv) William Creecy
v) Levi Creecy II

Levi Creecy II (1710-1772) m. Mary Charlton widow Houghton
Issue:
i) Mary Creecy (1751-1772) m. George Baines
ii) Eliazer Creecy (b.1753) m. Elizabeth Mathis
iii) William Creecy (1755-1816) m. Sarah "Sally" Rice
iv) Lemuel Creecy (1757-1816) m. Penelope Skinner
v) Thomas Creecy (b. 1759) m. Sarah Arrington
vi) Nathan Creecy (1761-1818) m. Elizabeth Rice
vii) Elizabeth Creecy (1767-1838) m. Charles Moore (family bible in NC Digital Collections)

I also have some vague information that a Sarah Creecy married Richard Skinner and had issue Joshua Skinner who married Sarah Wingate Creecy. This would make Sarah Creecy the same generation as Levi I (and the 5 brothers) - I have no dates for her to confirm.

I also have based vaguely on wills a Elizabeth Creecy, daughter of Job (probably brother of Levi I) who married a William Moore.
Origin of Creecy in North America - NC, TN, Boston

Just reposting this - I've never found any proof of this tale outside of this publication - ship lists, etc.

The name Cressy shows up in the late 1600's in the Norfolk, VA area as well. I am trying to build a tree from these 5 brothers, but haven't had much luck outside of Levi Creecy, whom I am descended from. Please reply with any information you may have.

From "Grandfather Tales of North Carolina" by Richard Benbury Creecy copyright 1901

THE HUGUENOT BLOOD IN NORTH CAROLINA.

The revocation of the Edict of Nantes is one of the most memorable events in French history, and is a most significant illustration of the mercurial disposition of the French people. The French people have more individuality than any people that have ever lived upon earth, and their individuality finds expression most frequently in scenes of revolution, violence and bloodshed.
They are bright, vivacious, full of enterprise, energy and forecast, prone to take oft'ence, sudden and quick in quarrel, and daring death at the cannon's mouth. They have given to history its greatest military heroes, its greatest statesmen, greatest philosophers, its greatest writers, its greatest poets, and its greatest orators. The first Napoleon said to one of his great Marshals who had followed him in his exile, and who stood by him in the supreme hour of death: "Bertrand, there have been but three great captains, Ceasar, Alexander and myself."

The world has furnished no greater warrior than Napoleon, no greater scientist than Cuvier, no greater poet than Bossuet, no greater philosopher than Fenelon, no greater
novelist than Hugo, no greater dramatist, save Shakespeare, than Moliere ; and France has made more history, both in its social and tragic features, than any other nation on earth. They must have derived their fighting blood from Cain, their sagacious blood from Esau, their military blood and wise strategy from Joshua, their astronimic blood from Job, and their wisdom from Solomon. This great blood, so compounded and intermingled, was cast upon the shores of Albemarle as a flotsam after the "Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.'

When that cruel and bloody persecution drove from France the best of its population, its most skilled artisans, the most cultured of its population, and enriched other lands with the best blood of France, the Albemarle country was newly settled and the Lords Proprietors invited, by liberal gifts and privileges, immigrants from all the world to come to the newfound land of Albemarle, subdue its forests and reduce to cultivation its rich "bottom lands.

Five brothers, Huguenots, skilled artisans, workers in metals, fabrics and leather, saw the invitation of the English Proprietors and determined to cast their lotin America. They were religious devotees, and left the land of their birth for freedom of conscience and freedom to worship God in obedience to its .dictates. They had suffered persecution, and in the 'choice of recantation, destruction or exile, they chose the last In the latter years of the seventeenth century, about 1680, as the family tradition has handed down to us, five Huguenot brothers sailed from France to seek an asylum from persecution in the wild lands of America. They crossed the ocean in safety, and in seeking an entrance into Carolina's inland broad waters, they encountered the storm-swept shoals of Hatteras, that octopus of the sea, whose appetite for suffering and death has never been sated, and there they were wrecked and cast upon its then inhospitable shores, with nothing saved but life.

Soon after, they explored the lands on the headwaters of Albemarle Sound and settled there. They settled in the counties adjacent to it. John located in Tyrrell and engaged in the seafaring trade to Boston, and married in Boston. Levi settled in Pasquotank County, owned the land on which Elizabeth City now stands, and is supposed to have engaged in commercial pursuits. Thomas settled in Perquimans and became a farmer. Job settled in lower Chowan and became a successful farmer and worker in leather, which had been his business in his native home in France. What became of the other brother is not known, but it is said in the old family traditions that he was drowned in Tennessee many years after. These brothers were the germ-seed and origin of the numerous family of Creecys scattered over the counties of Albemarle Sound.

Keywords: John Creecy, Job Creecy, Levi Creecy, Thomas Creecy

Here is information on Geroge Creecy and his immediate family. I have additional information on the Creecy's that I am willing to share. Although these Creecy's lived in Portsmouth, the family line is from the Creecy's in Northeastern North Carolina dating back to the late 1600's.

George's father that you inquired of was:
Ammizirah F. Creecy was born June 17, 1874 in Portsmouth, Virginia to George A. Creecy and Sarah Jane Ferebee. Ammizirah Creecy married Annie Virginia Spaulding around 1897 in Portsmouth, Virginia. Annie Virginia Spaulding was born July 4, 1871 in Virginia to James Alphonso Spaulding and Roxanna DeVaughan.

Lemuel Creecy is the brother of my Ancestor Robert.
They were born in Perquimans Co. NC to Levi and Elizabeth WILLIAMS CREECY. Levi and Elizabeth WILLIAMS married 17 July 1792 ("Perquimans Co. NC Marriage Records 1758-1865" Francis T. Ingmire, 1984. Alpha listings)

The North Carolina State Archives Estate papers 1704-1830
C.R.077.508.25 CREECY. Yeiled a treasure trove of information on this family.
1. Elizabeth was obviously a 2nd wife
2. Elizabeth quickly married 2nd Jerimiah Collins
3. Lemuel and Robert were the only named orphans. The other children of Levi were adults. (1800 Perquimans Census shows that Levi was over 45).
4. The other children of Levi were:Levi, Jermiah, Obed, Josiah, Lemuel Jr, Anna Smith and Sarah Burket. The division of Levi's estate (he died without a will) they all shared equally. 23 April 1803.
NC State Archives Perquimans Co. CHARLES-ELIOT C.R. 007.801.3 Will of John CREECY proves that Levi is his son. His wife was Catherine and other children were Thomas, John, Elizabeth PROCTER, Sarah WINGATE, Debra and Rhoda. Will was written 25 Nov 1764, however in a depostion where Catherine gives up her exatrix she states John died 2 years before the date she signed 20 Jan 1777.
Will of Levi CREECY documents that the above John was his son. will written 21 Oct 1734 and probated 28 1734. ("The Historical and Genealogical Register" Jan 1900 Vol. 1, J.R.B. Hathaway, Edenton NC, page 37.) This Levi CREECY is the first man of this line found so far. He is first recorded receiving a patent in Pasquatank Co. NC in 1714.
George A. CREECY married Sarah Jane FEREBEE 19 Dec 1866 in Portsmouth, VA License # 780.
Cedar Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth: CREECY, George A # 9th VA Inf Abt 1838 Nansemond Co VA 21 Jun 1883 lot 7 280 Portsmouth VA and CREECY, Sarah J BAKER 7 Feb 1840 VA 23 Jan 1917 Portsmouth VA Bronchitis 7 280.
Elizabeth WILLIAMS was the daughter of John WILLIAMS of Chowan Co. NC. per his will, Levi was ex.There was no date on the will, but it had to be after the marriage of his daughter in 1792. There is a deposition of Levi CREECY where by he gives the ex. to Nathan CREECY. That is dated 6 June 1798. ( NC State Archives C.R.024 801.12 Chowan Wills 1694-1910)
Another researcher, has said she has not followed this up but she recorded a first marriage for your Lemuel. To a Catherine Skinner, 15 Jan 1828.

I am searching for Pauline Hammett and may be really reaching to match the information in your 2003 email about the Creecy family.

Here are the coincidences:

Pauline married Glenn Coleman Watson whose family came to the Texas Panhandle (Floyd County)by way of Grayson County.

Pauline named her daughter Leo Maude....(possibly after her mother?)

We were told Pauline's maiden name was Rowland but she might have been raised by step father. Her name lisited on a son's birth record is Hammett.

Glenn and Pauline were my husband's grandparents, pioneer farmers and dairymen near Lockney, Texas.

One more thing: I can't find any reference, but I somehow think "Pauline" might have been a middle name.

If you see any connection with your family's information that may help me learn more about Pauline, I would really appreciate your help!

Vicki Watson
mrsowats@sbcglobal.net
Howdy Cousin! You are one of ours. My g-g-grandfather was Bennett Creecy, also raised his children in Giles County TN. But part of the Creecy clan branched out and settled in Texas and about 12 other states. We are in the process of publishing the Compiled Book of Creecy which will be made available in Sept. It covers the Original family from Virginia to TN. and then to the other states. All of the Creecy cousins are contributing what they have, and it looks like the book will be about 400 pages, spiral bound, it sells for the cost of making and mailing, $35 each. If you are interested, just send me a check and your mailing address I'll put your name on the list. I am a Genealogist living in Utah, but I am also Creecy, and this book is very special to anyone named Creecy. Please reply to my e-mail address and introduce yourself further. gearygen@aol.com Talk to you soon, your cousin, Jessie Geary

Hello, I am a professional Genealogist living in Utah. I am also the G-G-Granddaughter of James B. Creecy who went to the Pacific Northwest on the Oregon trail with his Dad, Bennett Creecy, and the rest of his family. I have been compiling research information from the four corners of North America and proofing all of the info to compile one very large and complete CREECY book. All those involved will of course receive proper credit for their endeavors. I am including work by Mary Lines Peffer, as she requested,Stacey Holt, Jeanette Sharringhousen, and Michael Scrape. Anyone with any info or photos to add please feel free to contact me. I am currently working on the Oregon Creecys because I am one! But will include the Creecys/Creacys of Virginia, and Tennessee before the branch came to Oregon, and the ones who stayed in TN. I need facts, pictures, and old letters that I know are in someone's attic. This book will be available for the cost of the printing and supplies to all interested people and helpers. I cannot accept MIMe format. Only jpg. and gif. and basic text files. Thank you all. Let's make this a great book!

The branch of the family I am involved with is William Creasy and wife Mary, Married 1735, Goochland Co. VA. Their son was Thomas Creasy, his son was William Creasy, and Nancy Carter Creasy, of Cumberland Co. VA. and their son was Bennett Creecy, and his wife Martha Brown Creecy of Pilaski, Giles Co. TN. I really think your wife is of another branch, Bennett and his children migrated to Oregon, by way of Missouri and Illinois, in 1853, and James did have a son named James born in 1875 in Portland,OR. This book is called "300 years of CREECYS"by Mary Lines Peffer..1974

Dear James, I happen to know that the Creecy book by Mary Lines is out of print since she had been dead for quite a few years. I am in the process of compiling a new, enlarged version, as where she only followed the straight line descendancy of the birst born sons, I am following all branches off of the original farmers from VA. A copy of her book is available on microfilm by ordering the film through any LDS family history center. You can then Xerox the book, it is 94 pages long.( The new compilation will be over 200pgs) Here is the call(film#)number: 973022.
Feel free to e-mail me at anytime and ask questions about Creecy history. I am the g-g-granddaughter of James B. and Lydia Smith Creecy from Tenn. who migrated to Oregon in 1853. I am also a Genealogist.
Mr. Geary,
I am the great granddaughter of Mary elizebeth Creasy and Riley W. Stanfill. You have explained why I have been told Mary's father was James Creasy. I found in a county record where Susan's father was Wisby Smith and Nancy---. My great grandmothers headston reads her birthdate as being 15 September 1868. Why does the Census report say she was born in 1870? I know that Census's were not always accurate. this date is also in the Riley Stanfill family bible. I know for a fact (through my mother) that these dates were recorded when grandmother Mary Creasy Stanfill was alive. I am just curious. Grace Gugliotti

Edenton Tea Party Creasy signatories 1774

As a resident of Edenton interested in local history, I am attempting to discover information beyond their signed names about who were the 51 women who participated in the Edenton Tea Party (Chowan county, NC) on October 25, 1774, and am wondering if anyone on this board might be able to help me with three of them: Elizabeth Creacy, Mary Creacy, and Mary Creacy.

I suspect that one of the Marys may have been the widow of Levi Creecy, nee Charlton, possibly later remarried a Haughton.
I didn't find them in the book either, and I would know, having been the one who compiled the thing. I did find a Jeremiah Creasy and his wife Susan, and their 10 year old daughter Mary Elizabeth in the 1880 census in the Scotts Hill area of Henderson Co., TN. There is a chance these are the same people, But the Father preferred to use "James". More research is needed to find them. In Decatur, TN, 1880, I found the future husband of Mary Elizabeth, Riley W. Stanfild (Stanfill, mis-scribed) and his family. Riley was born in 1866, Mary in 1868. The dates and places seem to match. And that's about all I have to say about that.
