Hello - I thought you might like this information if you don't already have it...

T. W. Creed

(Thomas William Creed)

Service no 195973

Driver, Royal Field Artillery"A" Bty. 150th Bde.

Killed in action on 27 May 1918

Remembered at Etretat Churchyard Extension, France

Information from the 1901 census

In 1901 Thomas Creed and his family lived at 13 Ashmole Place. His father, also Thomas W. Creed, was a 31-year-old carriage-trimmer, born in Westminster. His mother, Jane M. Creed, 26, was born in Lambeth. There were two siblings: Alfred C. Creed, 2, and Florence M. Creed, 1. All the children were born in Lambeth.

The 1911 census shows more siblings (all born in Lambeth:

An older sister, Ellen Creed, then 18 (ie born 2 years before Thomas), a laundry hand

Thomas, 16, was by now a van boy

Alfred Charles Creed, 12, and Florence Mable Creed, 11, were at school

Ernest John Creed was 8

Hilda Charlotte Creed was 3

Ethel May Creed was 1

Maud Hathorty, a 20-year-old single waitress from Lambeth was visiting.

SERVICE HISTORY

Thomas Creed signed up with the Wiltshires at the very beginning of the war on 25 August 1914, about 3 weeks after Britain declared war. Creed gave his birthplace as Blackfriars and his trade or calling as "carpenter". He stated that he was 19 and 7 months. The army GP described him as 5 ft 3½ inches (160cm), he weighed 114 pounds (just over 8 stone or 52 kg) with a florid complexion, fair hair and blue eyes.

The papers show contradictory information for where he signed up, with some stating "Kennington Street" and others "Devizes".

Creed's Wiltshire Regiment service number was 9795.

Creed served only 66 days, as he was rejected under Para 392 (iii) (c) of the King's Regulations.

hatever happened, Creed must have signed up later with the Royal Field Artillery. Creed's service history states that his father is Thomas Creed of 20 Ashmole Place, Church Street, South Lambeth. It was common practice then to move to a house in the same road, perhaps when better or bigger accommodation became available through the same landlord.

The west side of Blackfriars is in Lambeth, the east in Southwark.

I am researching names on the St Mark's Kennington war memorial (it's at the Oval, just opposite the tube). I have a website: www.stockwellwarmemorial.co.uk on which I have posted information about the Stockwell Memorial and plan to do the same for Kennington. All information goes up first on my news blog: www.stockwellnews.com.

If you would like me to add any details or make corrections, please let me know.

Parents of GIDEON CREED B.3-18-1817 SURRY CO. N.C. m. Eusebia Sims (1817-1910)

There has been much speculation on Gideon's parents. I am a direct descendant of Gideon Creed. Gideon Creed>Jasper Creed>Valerie(Creed)Lunderman>Oliver Creed Lunderman>Carol June (Lunderman) Adams>David Adams.

In the Pitts Family History Vol 1 it states M.G. Gideon Creed (may be it is a miss-print and should be M. Gideon Creed). Nyla Creed dePaulk (publisher of the Creed Family Genealogy Newsletter) speculates that the M. is for Matthew, which is reasonable speculation.

We are told that Gideon Creed is of Scots-Irish descent. Creed is believed to originally be a Cornish surname.

I wonder if Gideon is not his first name and is a middle name instead. If so Gideon might be the his mothers Maiden name. There were Gideon's in and around Surry County I believe at that time. The Gideon's were Scot-Irish.

Does anyone know how to get a hold of Ben Gravely or Marshall Hoffman Rising? I would like their thought on the above and also know if they have unearthed anything new regarding Gideon's parents.

Special Thanks to Nyla Creed!
Sincerely,
David Adams

From what I understand the Creed surname likely owes it origin to Cornwall, England. From what I remember the thought was that the name came into being because of the town of Creed-on-Grampound and the name literally meaning "of Creed." The information that I read stated that when descendable surnames came into favor, the name attached to certain families from that area.

Cornwall was a gaelic speaking region and apparently there are variations of Creed from other gaelic speaking regions such as Ireland as well. It might be that it was a surname common to the gaelic speaking world.

Of course it is so far in the past who really knows...

I'm sorry, but I don't have a Charles M. Creed in my line (that I have found.) My line comes down through Joseph M. Creed. Joseph did come to Missouri, but he was on the west side of the state. I still haven't figured out what drew him there. I have found the following links that may have more information for you:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nylasgenea... (Nyla has quite a few Creed Newsletters that may include info on Charles).

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/o/d/Julia-W-Kod...

I hope this helps...best of luck!
William Creed of Jamaica NY

Hi all,

I am looking for info on the ancestry of William Creed (b. 1645) of Jamaica NY. There seems to be a lot of good records regarding his life in Jamaica but it appears there is nothing regarding his ancestry out there. Does anyone out there have any leads on who his parents might be?

From what I have gathered from my searches Jamaica was not founded until 1656, which is 11 years after he was born. It also appears that the people who founded Jamaica most likely came from Hempstead, which was founded 1644. The people who founded Hempstead came from Stamford, Connecticut likely by way of Boston. So it may be that his parents will show up in any one of those towns.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Oh one more thing. Bridget Creed Gubbins' children were all born in Ireland, so it seems likely they were all born in County Limerick as well. I do have Bridget as born in Martintown though.

Beth

Hi Jenny!

Good to hear from you! I haven't had much luck looking into the Creed-Gubbins connection, so I am definitely curious as to what you have found between them? What I know is that Patrick Creed had married Hanora Hayes and had at least 3 children: Ellen Creed, who died 8 Feb 1900, probably Chicago, Cook Co, IL, who was married to John McCarthy, Patrick Creed; and Bridget Creed Gubbins, who was married to William Gubbins and was born January 1832 and died December 7 1911 in Chicago, Cook Co, IL. They had at least 4 children: Catherine Gubbins, Patrick C Gubbins, Honora Gubbins, and William Gubbins. The Gubbins hail from Co. Limerick in Ireland, that I do know for certain.

I'll have to ask another cousin if he has more information on this or not.

Sincerely,

Beth Gubbins

Hi Beth,

Just revisiting this thread -
I think there is a definite connection here.
This is the Creeds I have from Ballinvreena
John Creed born 1819 Dromin married Bridget Hayes (born c1820) on 5th Oct 1846 in Ballinvreena. Bridget was the daughter of John Hayes of Ballinvreena. confirmed
They had many children and when Bridget died, John and the family went to America after 1856(where?)
John Creed had a brother William who died in 1856, he had 3 children Charles, Patrick and William Creed (DOBs before 1856) When father william and his wife died John Creed, his brother Francis and his late wife's brother Patrick Riordan took charge of the children.
I am thinking that the children went to America with John Creed - who may have been known as Patrick once he got to America? do you know when Patrick died?
There is also a strong connection to the Gubbins family too.
I know my John Creed and Bridget Hayes had many children, he was a farmer in Ireland, ran a deer farm till it went bust. I haven't found any imigration details for John and Bridget Creed.

Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Jenny Creed

Hello Janet,

Sorry to take so long to come back again on Cadwallader but I've made some headway with the Creed line and have now made the connection.

Cadwallader married Mary Creed 1774 Cork

Mary was the Daughter of Edward Creed of Cork and Rebecca Coles.
Edward was the brother of Charles Creed of Ballynanty, Co Limerick, my husband's3x greatgrandfather
I have a copy of Edward's will in which his daughter, Mrs Mary Acteson and her children William and Mary are mentioned.
look forward to hearing from you or Susan

Jenny
