Hi, my name is Richard, I live in County Cork, Ireland. I recently attended a Creedon Reunion in Creedons Hotel, Inchigeelagh, Co. Cork, although I have no Creedon ancestry. I was actually chatting to a Jeremiah Creedon of Blarney, son of Jeremiah, son of Jeremiah who was looking through the parish records for an ancester. I know that he found several, although the dates did not tie in for him. There are several hundred pages of records of births etc. kept at the hotel.
Interestingly, you mention that your Jeremiah married a McCarthy. This area is full of McCarthys, Blarney castle having been their seat of power. They were a very strong and sucessful family, who managed to retain power throughout mant troubled times.
I may be able to put you in touch with him if you desire that.
Regards
Richard

P.S.
I beleive that a Californian Creedon attended the reunion too.

Hannah was born in Ireland in 1878. She had a brother Jeremiah Creedon and he was married to Catherine McCarthy, they had four children, Mary, Jeremiah, Agnes (Catherine), and Cornelus (Neil). I cannot find any information about Jeremiah and Hannah's parents or their birth. Supposingly they are from Cork County Ireland but I can not find a jeremiah or hannah close to their age so any information would help thanks

Re: John Creeden

Linda, how are you descended from John Creedon and Ellen Patterson? My wife is a great-granddaughter of their son Daniel Creedon.

Daniel was born November 7, 1877 in Wayne County, according to the marriage record on file here in Pittsburgh. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Emporium, Cameron County, where Daniel shows up as a three year old in the 1880 census, but moved to Scranton a few years later. These were my only clues to the identity of his parents and his place of birth. I think his name appears in the Scranton City Directory before he moved to Allegheny County in the late 1890s.

In 1900 Daniel Creedon married a young widow named Stella (Keenan) Huch, who gave him at least eight children of his own. The two oldest were named Daniel and Stella, after their parents, and then came a pair of twins named Ellen (after Ellen Patterson Creedon) and Walter (after Ellen's father, Walter Patterson). Daniel also had siblings named Walter and Ellen back in Scranton.

I do not know when Daniel or Stella (the parents) died, nor do I know much about the rest of their children, aside from my wife's grandmother Mary Rita Creedon. Family lore says that they "returned to the place they came from", but only Daniel was born outside of the Pittsburgh area.

Does any of this help? I am afraid I do not know much beyond 1860.

Although this is not directly related to your request, you are the only 'Sheehan' msg listed in the Boston area. My mother was adopted by the Cunniffs in 1913 in Malden but was born Bertha Sheehan in Boston. I have the original adoption papers but the MA courts are refusing to provide any further information on the Sheehan side of the family. Would you happen to know of any 'Sheehans' who know of a Bertha born in Boston in 1913 but given up for adoption shortly after birth? She married in 1936, died in Quincy in 1984 and had three children, of which I am the youngest. Kindly let me know one way or the other. Thanks.

I am also researching Creedons of Newburyport. I have traced some of the descendents of Jeremiah Creedon, b. 1817 in Kilmichael, Co. Cork. He had three wives - all named Kelleher. He married first wife, Hannah Kelleher, in Ireland. She died leaving him with a son. He may have married his second wife there also. He came to Newburyport and 2nd wife died. Then he married 3rd wife, another Hannah Kelleher. She was a sister to my great grandfather, Matthew Kelleher. They had 5 children. If you can spot any connections please let me know. Rose

Creedon family

I'm just beginning my search but I may have some information that can be helpful- my grandmother, Margaret Creedon, was born in Ballylongford, County Kerry, Ireland in 1873. She was the oldest of the six children of Cornelius Creedon and Ellen Harty/Harte/Hardy(?). Her father was an ornamental plasterer (according to family stories) who brought her to the US after receiving letters from 2 of his wife's sisters who had moved to Georgia and suggested that they send "Maggie". Many years ago, a relative tried to find information about these 2 women in Georgia but was not successful. Margaret Creedon was married some years after arriving in New York City- to my grandfather, John Murphy. He died probably in 1914- in New York. His mother's maiden name was Bresnahan (?). This may be too recent to interest anyone searching for older records, but after WWII, my father visited a cousin, another Cornelius Creedon, owner of a cement company in Ireland. The photo that I have shows several young people, probably Cornelius' children, and a large home. The only other real info that I have is that an earlier ancestor, probably of the Bresnahan family, came to the US from Ireland on a ship named the Topscot. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has information on these families.

I was just going over my notes on the Creedon, and my grandmothers brother Walter had 2 children listed on the 1920 census, a Walter and Thomas Joseph. Maybe this is your link. I didn't see a Eileen but maybe she was born after 1920. I don't have any information further than John J Creeden and Ellen Patterson. He was born in Ireland and immigration in 1860. She was born in NY, her father was also NY but mother from Ireland.

My father's second cousin, Madeline Green, married a Timothy C. who lived in Providence but was born in Philadelphia in the 1890's.
I believed they lived in or had relatives in Norwood Ma. in the mid 1930's. They lived in New Jersey where Tim died. I believe they had one son, Charles, who would be in his early 70's. Do you have a connection with this family?

David,
Thank you for getting back to me. I'm sorry if I sounded skeptical about Daniel's relationship to my Creedon's. The real skeptic is my grandmother, who is the daughter of Ellen (Nell) Creedon. She has never heard of her mother having a brother named Daniel, but I think I have her convinced that it's true. Anyway, thank you for all of your information. My next step is trying to find the census that you have of the Patterson's in Wayne Co. I already have the info. from Scranton, and after your last post, I found the census when the family was in Cameron Co. By the way, do you have Ellen's mother's name & whether there were any siblings? Sorry I am such a pain! I really do appreciate all of your help on this. Tell your wife that there is a whole bunch of relations out here on the other side of PA! :) Please keep me posted if you find anything new and interesting out, and I promise to do the same.

Re: John Creeden

David, thank you for responding to my message. To answer your question, I am the great granddaughter of Ellen (Nell) Creedon from Scranton, PA. John & Ellen Patterson Creedon were her parents.
I was very excited by your message, but I have a few questions as well. Some of the story certainly sounds like your Daniel might be related to my Creedon's, but some of the story doesn't fit with what I know. I never knew the Creedon's lived anywhere else besides Scranton. I do know that Ellen Patterson was born in NY--is this true about your Ellen P. as well? Also, we know of at least 11 children of John & Ellen. The 1900 & 1910 census both say that Ellen gave birth to 15 children & that 12 are living. As I said, we know about 11, so it just may be your Daniel is the elusive missing one. The other siblings I have are Margaret, Mary, Liz, James, Jane, Walter, Edward, William, Nellie (my g.grandmother), Paul & Joseph. Do these names sound familiar?
The last thing I want to verify, if I could, is a family tale passed down. The story was that Ellen Patterson Creedon was on a train to visit one of her daughters (who was having a baby) when the train she was on went over an embankment. Ellen did not immediately die, but rather was "never right again" (what exactly that means, I have no idea). Some time later (a year?? two??), she finally passed away. I'd really be interested in knowing whether this is a story your wife or her grandmother also heard?
Your message was my first break in finding out more about this family...if indeed we're talking about the same family. Please let me know if these things sound like they pertain to your Creedon's as well. If they don't, we have a wild genealogical coincidence here! Take care.

Her year of birth is 1822 according to the 1880 US Census. She married Daniel Finn (1818-1897) and the family moved to Cardiff, Wales. Daniel and Catherine had five children with three of them living to adulthood: Mary A. Finn (1860-1885) who was born in Ireland or Wales; Nora M. Finn (1866-1898) who was born in Wales and married John Joseph Burke I (1868-1939); and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Finn (1873-1918) who was born in Cardiff in Wales. There were two more children that died at birth and they are probably buried in Wales or Ireland. In 1880 Daniel and Catherine were living in Jersey City with their daughter Nora, while Mary A. Finn appears to be working as a servant housekeeper for James B. Hance, a produce store owner. Catherine, Daniel's other daughter, is working as a servant at L.S. Williard in Jersey City. L.S. Willard was a dry goods salesman. Catherine Finn later became a private secretary at the American Lead Pencil Company in Hoboken and raised her sister's child after her sister died. Daniel died in 1887 of "phthisis pulmonalis" while living at 276 1st Street in Jersey City. Around 1889, Nora married John Joseph Burke I (1868-1939) and had a child, Mary (May) Margaret Burke (1890-1949). Catherine Creedon died on New Year's Day, January 01, 1914 at her home on 41 Hopkins Avenue where she lived with her daughter, Catherine Finn and her granddaughter Mary (May) Margaret Burke (1890-1949). The cause of death was "pulmonary edema with epithelioma on face". Catherine is buried at Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City.
