Still on the hunt for the parents and siblings of Terrence Creighton. since my last post i have learned that he arrived in the U.S.june 1844.
He may have changed his name after arrival in the statesFrom O'Cregan,Creehan,Crehan or any other variant to "Chreighton"
Terrence was born in Co Monaghan,Parish of Clones on Aug 8,1822
Have also learned that he was born or may have resided in the towns of Crockada,Rosslea,Clones,Smithborough or Monaghan. these towns all seem to be within a 10 mile radius of each other. Crockada and rosslea are in Co Fermanagh while Clones, smithborough, and monaghan are in Co Monaghan.
He also had a brother who served in the American Civil War
his name is unknown but a guess would be John, who may have lived in Philidelphia. The baptismal records show a John Creighton Margaret McCaffery as God Parents
Terrence lived in new Jersey , was married there and had four children with his wife Mary. In the early 1860's the family moved to California.
Any help from anyone would be most appreciated and of course i will be happy to share what information i have on the Creightons
THANKS- Peter

To all the responders: I'm so sorry for not answering sooner. When I initially put my email address on the Internet it caused the address to be flooded with spam, so I had to change it. I posted the change, but didn't realize until now that some notifications of response were still going to the old, defunct, address. I just happened to see the recent postings through a lucky error. I need to go back and look for the photos. It's been ages since I thought abou this! I'll also attempt to fix the email address. You can contact me temporarily at dogwalker47-mscl

@yahoo.com

Hi, I just noticed these queries and was wondering whether anyone might be related or have info.

My gggrandfather, Andrew Creighton, was born c. 1802 in Troqueer, Scotland. His parents, I believe, were Samuel Creighton (b. Lochmaben) and Mary Richardson (b. Troqueer). Samuel and Andrew emigrated to Canada around 1823 and settled in Mt Thom, Pictou Co., Nova Scotia. Andrew married Sarah Smith, daughter of Donald W Smith & Jennet McIntosh from Rannoch. Other Creighton families also settled there and I was wondering whether they may be related to Andrew, eg., James and Alexander.

Hi Ann,
Thank you for your response. I just wanted to comment on a couple of things you mentioned: 1) In the 1851 Canadian census Martha, with her husband John King and family are in Elgin, Huntingdon Co. Quebec, and her birthplace is listed as Ireland. On all subsequent records, birth is listed for Scotland, but ever since I found the 1851 listing, I've wondered if perhaps she WAS born in Ireland. That would correlate with what you have said. 2) None of their children or ancestors has the first name 'Boston', but as I mentioned in my post, my great grandfather (their 2nd son) was named George B. King & I've never figured out what the "B." stood for.... I was thinking perhaps it represented Martha's mother's maiden name, but what if it stood for 'Boston'?
Pretty sketchy possible connections, I agree, but surely something to think about! You never know where the smallest tidbit can lead you!
Thanks again for posting, and if I find more I'll let you know.
Best regards,
Judy

My Creightons, too, (Irish spelling) came from Scotland to Quebec (although in early 1840's) then into Chicago. Look also for CRITON, which is how is was misspelled when they emigrated to the US, if that helps....also, if you have any Creightons with the first or middle name "BOSTON", that is definitely a connection to my Creightons. Most Creightons that I've researched ended up being Irish, not Scottish, the correct Scottish spelling (as you know!) is Crichton. Good luck!!!! Mine were Midlothian Scots, from the Edinburgh area.

Martha CREIGHTON (possibly Crichton or Crighton) SCT>MI USA

Martha CREIGHTON was born 1803-1808 in Scotland. She married John King 20 Mar 1825 in Old Monkland, Lanark. According to the parrish record Martha was living 'in Blantyre'. In 1827, when their 1st child, was christened, their residence was Baillieston. They immigrated to Quebec in early 1830's, then in 1850's Martha (widowed) & their children moved on to Michigan, and from there the family spread to Wisconsin, Minnesota and all through the northern USA. I have them well documented after they immigrated, but have been unable to find ANY information as to Martha's parents &/or siblings.

On the Parrish record of their marriage, surname is CRICHTON; on baptismal record for first child, surname is CRIGHTON; on the baptismal record for several of their children in Quebec, her name is spelled CREIGHTON. I'm using the latter, as it appears to be a signature, but spelling could be either of the three.

Also, their 1st son is named William, after John's father. Second son is George B. so I wonder if Martha's father's name is George CREIGHTON & her mother's surname began with 'B'. I believe this would follow Scottish naming procedures?

The tiniest clue would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Judy

They are a hard Family to trace,
I would love to hear how your research is going and if you PM me I can update you on what I have, like I say though, not sure I'd there's a connection in our families
Regards
Fean

Re: CREIGHTON's - Ireland to Australia/New Zealand

Hello Lorraine.

I'm also researching the Creighton name but I don't believe there's a link. My husband is a direct male line descendant of Joseph Creighton (c.1802, son of John) sent out from Dublin as a 15yo convict sentenced to 7yrs for the theft of tea.

What I wanted to say was that Irish civil records did not begin to be kept until the 1860s, about 1864 I think. Prior to that, the only records kept in Ireland were by the church parishes so you need to find out which parish he was from to make a search easier or cheaper if you require a researcher. Many civil records were destroyed in the Four Courts fire in Dublin in 1922 during one of the many Uprisings. The parish records are the only ones that are relatively complete, considering the time frame.

Try the website www.RootsIreland.ie

There's costs just to view any information you may find but they do have an extensive archive of Irish records that may help you.

Good Luck!

Maggie Creighton

I remember meeting Francis and Leta, and their son Darryl, Bob (Robert) and Gladys and Mary Lee and John (barely)and Daisy and Lorne and their daughters Lorna and Peggy. And I think I met Jack and Opal must I must have been very young. I was disappointed last time I visited the old Creighton farm near Demming to see that the house was gone. Does anyone know if it burned down or what? Lorna
