Edith Edna's obit showed that she was the daughter of Allen Cremean and Jennie (possibly Jane) Drury. The birthdate is correct as is the birthplace. With her brother having the same parents, she definitely was Edith Edna Miller before she apparently lived with the Cremeans. Was she adopted?

Edith Edna Cremean was born Edith Edna Miller in Hancock Co., OH. Her parents, Elizabeth Ellen Burk and Harvey Oliver Miller, died 1892 and 1896. Her brother, Ernest Clyde was living with Burk grandparents in Henry Co., OH,in the 1900 census. Edith's marriage in IN showed her as Edith Cremean. Since I can't find her in the 1900 census, she may have been living with a Burk relative, a cousin, etc. and may have just taken the name of Cremean from them. She married Charles Francis McKee and they lived in Elkhart, IN. This is a brick wall for me. Would love to find info on them.

I found this while searching for my Creameans ancestors and thought I'd post it in the event that it might help someone else. It's from the newspaper New Era, Parker SD, dated Dec. 8, 1899: The dead body of John Cremeans was found at Glenwood, OH, with a bullet hole in the head. He was aged and wealthy, and his young wife is missing.

children of Josias Cremeans & Sarah Brown

Josias is said to be son of the John Cremeans who came from Cork County, Ireland. (alt spellings: Cremeens, Cremean, Cremmean, Crimine, Carmean, Cremeen, etc.)

He is commonly listed as marrying Sarah Brown in 1715.

Josias & Sarah's children are usually listed as follows:

1. James - b. abt 1705*
2. Joseph - b. abt 1710**
3. John - b. aft 1715
4. Josias - b. aft 1715
5. Jeconias - b. abt 1717
6. Moses - b. aft 1715

I am confused though by James and Joseph... They are said to be born before Josias & Sarah are said to be married?

Does anyone have proof that James & Joseph are indeed Josias' children? Why do people feel Sarah Brown is their mother?

My line is said to be:
John -> Josias -> Joseph -> Higgins -> Elizabeth (Clagg)

Although, I have read some people believe Higgins' father is Josias' other son Jeconias. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi Angie, I am descended from Jemima Cook (Cocke) Paul Cremeans. She was the second wife of Burton, and was previously married to Jesse Paul. Jesse and Jemima had six children together. Their daughter, Rachel Ophelia, was my GGGrandmother. Jemima was not African American. I have a picture of Rachel Ophelia and her husband, Absalom Roberts, in their older years. There is a scandalous story about how Jemima and Burton ended up together. Let me know if you want more info. Heather

I show her birth date as about 1817, but notes found on Cremeans.net indicate she may have been born around 1826:

1860 Cabell County, Virginia census
The family of Charles Waugh, 29, lists a woman living with them named Nancy Cremeans, 34, daughter of Burton & Polly Cremeans. There is also a woman named Susan Cremeans, 20, living here and she is the daughter of Durgan Cremeans. Another annotation says a Cremeans guardianship settlement, January 11, 1869, Charles Waugh, guardian of heirs of Durgan Cremeans and three children not named

This is all I have on a Nancy.

Re: Burton Cremeans Descendent

Here is what I know about Jemima Cook Paul Cremeans, but first let me say that I consider myself only a hobbyist when it comes to genealogy. Much of what I have in my files is family lore or other stories I have picked up from the internet or other hobbyists. Some of my information was lost last year due to the untimely death of my hard drive and my own failure to backup my files. So here goes. . . .

Jemima Cocke was born about 1796. She married Jesse Paul on Feb 26, 1824 in Cabell County, VA. They had six children: Rhoda Ann (1824), Jemima (1825), Eli Washington (1828), Eliza Jane (1832), Rachel Ophelia (1833), and Elizabeth (1836). She married Burton Cremeans on March 10, 1852 in Cabell County, VA, presumably after the death of Maime. She had six children with Burton. All of them were born years before their marriage. They were Amasa (1830), Durgan (1834), James G. (1834), Louara (1838), Louiza (1839) and Susan (1840). As you can see, she was having children with both men off and on. I can only suppose that she was keeping track of which man fathered which child.

It is my understanding that she worked at the Cremeans home as a housekeeper/midwife/nurse. By the time the 1850 Census was taken, neither Jemima, her husband, Jesse, or the two oldest daughters were residing in the Paul household. The census lists House No. 707, Family No. 732 in Putnam County, VA consisting of Eli Paul, age 21; Eliza Paul, age 19; Rachel Paul, age 17 and Elley Paul, age 14. It is also my understanding that Amasa and his siblings always resided at the Cremeans home and it was common knowledge that they were Burton's children with Jemima.

I have read of speculation that it was the younger Jemima that Burton had children with and later married, but it would have been impossible as she was only five years older than Amasa. Could she have married her mother's lover some years later in order to claim his pension? Perhaps, if her mother had predeceased him. But I remember reading the pension application on the internet and do not believe it was the younger Jemima making the claim. Some sources cite Jemima's date of death as before 1849, because Jesse Paul remarried on Nov 28, 1849, in Cabell County, VA. I believe she outlived Burton. I also remember reading of some old correspondence from one of Maime and Burton's grandchildren which concurred with most of what I have said here.

I guess all of this would have been quite a scandal in the mid 1800's. I know that my GGGrandmother, Rachel Ophelia, never spoke about any of this to her children or grandchildren. She told a story of her father, Jeffie McField, who came to America with his twin brother as indentured servants. The story goes that they worked off their indebtedness with a farmer named Paul, who treated them so well that they took his name as their own.

This is pretty much what I know, but I'll answer any questions that I can.
Thank you for the kind words. You are so very welcome! I came across that while looking for a Creameans ancestor of my own. It was the kind of thing that I would love to have found in relation to my own ancestors, and I just couldn't let it go to waste. I'm so glad I could bring back some happy memories for you. Take care...

I just wanted to thank you for posting the prohibition report that included Henry Cremeans- my Grandfather.I'm 56 years old,but I was laughing with tears in my eyes.I was constantly at his side the first 15 years of my life. I can barely use a computor, and when I stumbled upon it, I assure you it was dumb luck!
HENRY CREMEANS-Born 1894,died 1965.He road a horse to school, fought for his country in the trenches of WW1,ran boot-leg whiskey in the hills of West Virginia, played semi-pro baseball for $5 a game, hunted squirrels and rabbits to sell for money to support his family and was the first hero I ever had. Until this moment, I just didn't realize how much I still miss him. Once again,THANK YOU.

Susan Cremeans, age 20,(born approx 1840) could not possibly be the daughter of Durgan Cremeans and Rosanne because Rosanne Nipps was only 11 in the 1850 Cabell census making her born in 1839!

In the 1850 Cabell Census, District 10, Burton (#118)only had a Nancy Cremeans, AGE 20 LIVING WITH HIM. Mamie appearently was dead or gone! Next door was Jimimah Paul(#119)age 35, Amasiah Paul, age 18, Bowen(Durgan)Paul age 16, Goodwin L.Paul(male age 13), Louisa Paul, age 11, and Susanah Paul, age 10.
No Mamie, no Jesse Paul! Who was the Nancy Cremeans living with Burton in 1850?
Residents in succession on that page:#117 Nancy Nipps, #118 Burton Cremeans, #119 Jimimah paul, #120 Sanders Cremeans, # 121Hirum Cremeans
Question...who was the Nancy Cremeans, age 20, living with him in the1850 Census? No one else was listed in the household.
I have several questions about the Burton Jemima relationship.James Waugh states the following:
"My great grandmother Luerra Cremeans was daughter of Burton and Jemima. They lived on Madison Crk. in southern Cabell Co. All thier children were born before they married. His first wife died 1852, he and Jemima then married and he died 1854. Jemima recieved his military pension and 160 acres of bounty land. The children included Luerra, Durgin, Amaza, Luiza and Susan. Am trying to verify. Would appreciate any help."
Another c&p: "Winchester Cremeans issued a sworn Affidavit in 1904 that "he had been acquainted with Amasa Cremeans(Jemimahs son by Burton) all his life." "He was born in Mason Co.Wv. on Little Guyan Creek, in August of 1830."
"I gain knowledge of this fact by him being born at my fathers house".This was his statement.
Burton and Jemimah lived on adjoining farms in Cabell co.
by 1850 it doesn't appear that Jessie is still around.(Cabell Co. Census 1850) It seems rather likely that Burton and Jemima were very good neighbors!! (1850 Cabell Co. Census-
housholds 114-115.)"
Another c&p: "According to family oral history family, Elizabeth (Jemima's mother) worked in Burton's household and was his mistress while he was married to Mamie Adkinson. Then when Elizabeth died, he took her daughter Jemima Cook into the household and eventually fathered her children. In order to deflect suspicion, he paid a neighbor, Jesse Paul to marry Jemima and claim the children. After Burton's wife died, Jesse and Jemima divorced and she married Burton. Her children are shown on census records with the last name Paul, but later used the name Cremeans."
Another:"I haven't found any evidence one way or the other to confirm or deny the story. Sandy Blum has presented a convincing argument that the Jemima who married Burton Cremeans was not Jemima Cook but rather the daughter of Jesse Paul and Jemima Cook, also named Jemima. At this point, I'm keeping an open mind on the subject.
Hi Bob,
No, I haven't seen Burton's grave. We haven't lived in WV for almost 20 years now --- moved years before I got the genealogy bug!
You probably have lots more info than I do, since most of mine is from census records -- but if you want to compare notes, email me.
My Booth connection is my great-grandmother, Minnie Booth who married WIlliam Saunders Cremeans.
