I'm trying to find Meredith S. Crenshaw's father and grandfather and any other information and their ancestry. I am from this line. I believe M.S. Crenshaw's father was Meredith Graves Crenshaw B. 1803 and M.G. Crenshaw's father was William Crenshaw Jr. B 1773. I think William's father was William Crenshaw Sr B 1747 D 1787. He was married to Jane ??Graves?? B 1745. He died young and left orphans. William Jr. Meredith Graves Crenshaw B 1777 (This is a different MG Crenshaw), Patsy Crenshaw B 1779, Anne Crenshaw B 1781 and Nancy Crenshaw B 1780.

Some of this info is probably not correct but I'm looking for anything that can clarify where Meredith Sanford Crenshaw's line goes back to the original Virginia Crenshaws.

Thanks.
Dave

Ike & Viney Crenshaw History

Hello All, the following has been researched and gathered by our elders, research, and Bibles. Feel free to share.
We may be reached at Crenshawreunion@yahoo.com

Cassandra Crenshaw Butler

Crenshaw History:
The first statistical recount of the Crenshaw lineage begins in 1831 with the birth of Ike Oliver. Oliver is our given African name.
Ike Oliver also had seven brothers who were all sold into slavery. During that time, Ike and one of his brothers were allowed to remain on the plantation with their parents. When Ike Oliver was bout 14, he and the remaining brother were gathering water at the well when two slave owners kidnapped his brother. Ike never saw any of his brothers again. Ike and his parents were soon auctioned off to another Slave Owner Master Jones. Later Ike was taken from his parents and sold to Master Gideon Crenshaw who was a slave owner in Virginia. Ike didn’t speak much about his parents.
During the Emancipation Proclamation, the issuing order which freed the slaves in the Confederate States in 1962. Many slaves were not advised of this freedom, and because they did not know they were free they continued to work under the slave mentality on their master’s land. Ike was one of those workers.
Many people are unaware of the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill:
40 acres and a mule is a term for compensation that was promised to be awarded to freed African American slaves after the Civil War: 40 acres (16 ha) of land to farm, and a mule with which to drag a plow so the land could be cultivated.
40 acres (16 ha) was a quarter of a quarter-section. The award was a land grant deeded to heads of households, the land presumably formerly being owned by land-holding whites. It was the product of Special Field Orders, No. 15, issued January 16, 1865 by Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, which applied to black families who lived near the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Sherman's orders specifically allocated "the islands from Charleston, south, the abandoned rice fields along the rivers for thirty miles back from the sea, and the country bordering the St. Johns river, Florida". There was no mention of mules in Sherman's order, although the Army may have distributed them anyway. Federal and state homestead grants of the time ranged from 1/4 section up to a full section.
After the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, his successor, Andrew Johnson, revoked Sherman's Orders. It is sometimes mistakenly claimed that Johnson also vetoed the enactment of the policy as a federal statute (introduced as U.S. Senate Bill 60). In fact, the Freedmen's Bureau Bill which he vetoed made no mention of grants of land or mules. (Another version of the Freedmen's bill, also without the land grants, was later passed after Johnson's second veto was overridden.)
By June 1865, around 10,000 freed slaves were settled on 400,000 acres (160,000 ha) in Georgia and South Carolina. Soon after, President Andrew Johnson reversed the order and returned the land to its white former owners. Because of this, the phrase has come to represent the failure of Reconstruction and the general public to assist African Americans.
Ike was promised 5 acres of land, a mule, farm animals, seeds for planting, tools to get started, once they were freed, needless to say he nor any slaves never received any of these promises. Many have wondered “How could you not know you were free?” The gathering places that we often take for granted in this day and age, churches, schools, parks, malls, grocery stores, even each other’s houses, did not exist during that time. It was illegal and sometimes deadly if you were caught singing, praying, or trying to learn to read and write. It has been stated that while on Master Crenshaw’s land Ike Oliver Crenshaw enjoyed singing Jesus Stop By here.
Master Crenshaw’s wife had a fondness for Ike and eventually allowed him into the “BIG House.” As a cook and a servant. The Big House is a slave term that described the Master’s residence, or in other words, where the BOSS lived. Ike became known around the BIG House s “Flunky” his job was to keep the barn and horses clean in addition to being a cook and servant. He slept in the barn along with the horses.
Master Crenshaw had a daughter named Viney Crenshaw. Viney was a young White woman who fell in love with a freed slave. Although Ike was free, it was illegal for interracial marriages to occur in many states until 1975. Therefore, Ike and Viney would never be legally married in their lifetime. Ike and Viney settled Panola City, Mississippi around 1873. They had 17 children; some of those children were born in Charleston and other in Natchez Mississippi. Of the 17 children, there are verifiable records on Josh, Robert, Alf, Maggie, Virgie Lee, Will, John, Ida, Molly, and Oliver (the baby son). Ike Crenshaw died March 1925 at the age of 94. Viney Crenshaw died in March 1921 at the age of 69.
Josh Crenshaw was born in 1892. He met Rosie Noble who was ½ African American and ½ Cherokee Indian) in Charleston, Mississippi around 1911. They attended church services together. One day they went to church together and never returned. Instead they eloped. Ike (Josh’s father) rode his horse day and night for a month looking for them both. Once Josh and Rosie assumed both sets of parents had cooled off they came home. Josh and Rosie immediately began their family. Their first born Paulie, died in infancy, they later bore Mandy, George, Cecil, Daisy, Bob Robert, Annie Lee, W.T. and Earlene.
.

Cassandra Shenell (Crenshaw) Butler
Daughter of Will Crenshaw
Granddaughter of Cecil and Estella Crenshaw
Crenshaw Brothers/Kerr County

I am looking for someone to help me with a family story.

I am a direct descendant of Cornelius "Doc" Crenshaw, was one of 3 brothers that came to Tx from Tenn., the boys names wer Pleasant, Cornelius "Doc" and Carey Crenshaw, ages from 11-15?. Pleaseant rode the horse, Doc the mule and Carey the steer all the way. There was 25 bronze scuplture made of the trio and stories written in books on Kerr County history.

My issue is that I have confirmed birth dates, families and marriage dates. The issue that I am coming across newspapers and books that have dated, 1872, when they came to Tx at the ages of 11 thru 15 ish. My marriage and birth records show that Doc was born in 1848 and was 24 when he married Mollie Burleson in 1872. Another record on file is Pleasant married Melvina Burleson (sister to Mollie) in 1873. So, either the date that they came to Tx, 1872, is incorrect, maybe they were much older than the story, or the story and our family are not connected, but doubt since this was told by my grandmother, who heard it from her grandfather, Doc himself.

Please help.

Tana

Thank you for your prompt reply. I will anxiously await your information and will be glad to share anything I have, although it will be more current information than you are seeking, I presume. The original Crenshaw land is still in the family (a road runs through it). Fred Crenshaw of Wildwood, FL was gracious enough to give me a tour of the Crenshaw Cemetery with Crenshaws on one side and Perrys on the other. It is well maintained by family and friends. I have pictures if you are interested. Feel free to email, if you wish. JFamilyfinder at aol dot com....Joyce

The only Census that listed Mary Frances parents was the 1880 AR Census, where it stated that both parents were born in GA.
Do you know if any of the Crenshaws you mentioned, went farther west to AR?
One oral story is that when Mary Frances was about 7-9 yrs old, she & another girl were riding on a horse, the horse was spooked by a Mountain Lion. The other girl fell off the horse & by the time Mary Frances got back with help the girl was dead.
She never talked much about her Indian blood, because it was considered a lower class citizen at that time. So, she never got her Roll Card.

Dave,

I am a descendant of William C or H Crenshaw and Catherine Cheaney/Chaney, the family that went to Jackson County Indiana. And I am getting stuck as to who his father/mother and grandfather are. I believe his father was Daniel, married to Nancy Dupree, however one source says Daniel's son was William F. Crenshaw, who married Jane Hurt. Also, the same source says Daniel's father is Cornelius Crenshaw. Other information suggests Thomas Crenshaw.

Can you help untangle this?
Lucy Butko

Joyce,
I have stuff on both. Joseph Crenshaw Sr. was about 60 when he was recruited by Col. George Washington to be a translator. He spoke several indian dialects. He was the first person killed in the battle about a month later. When I get some time I will post more. I also have Micajah in my data base. I'm a VA Crenshaw.

I've heard, somewhere, that either Joseph or Thomas died in the French & Indian War at Ft. Duquesne. I have not been able to verify this so far. My line is through Micajah, who moved to SC. His son moved to Sumter County FL. Any help appreciated. Joyce in VA

There are 3 male Crenshaws in Scott Co.,AR in 1850 that are possible fathers of Mary Frances. Thomas, Ephraim & William Crenshaw. I have not been able to find anyone related to these 3 men. But, I believe she could fit into any of their families. If you happen to make a connection, please let me know.
Thanks
