There is no documented link between the USA Creques and the West Indian Crequis - yet! Much circumstantial evidnce but no absolute proof. The earliest Crequi/Markoe association so far found is 1715 in the British West Indies where a Philip Markoe was married to a Susanna Crequi. The parents of Francis (Frank) Crequi who married Elizabeth Markoe are as yet unknown. There is extensive information regarding these families at http://sites.google.com/site/markoeoffshore/

Original. not bound. Very Good. Few spots of foxing. Two documents, 6pp. Michael Lykes and his wife, Elizabeth (daughter of Thomas Morford, deceased) appoint East Windsor attorney Elijah Davis. The lawyer is to represent them in selling certain lands in Middlesex County to which Elizabeth has claim as the only daughter and heir of Thomas Morford, who inherited the land from his grandfather, William Updike of Middlesex County, by terms of a will dated November 22, 1778. On the back of this first document, one Andrew Rowan attests that Elizabeth came before him on August 15, 1824, at which time he examined her without her husband and she agreed to give power-of-attorney to Davis. The second document, dated at Lamberton on 21 June 1825, comprises several testimonials that Elizabeth is the daughter of Thomas Morford and Lucy Reed, who "for many years lived together and cohabited as man and wife." Elizabeth Dye attests that she believes Morford and Reed were legally married. Sarah Reed (Lucy's mother) states that Lucy was married to Morford at age 19 without Sarah's consent, and that they had a daughter named Elizabeth. Inserted in this document is the testimonial of John Smith of Lambertville (NJ), who states that he officiated at the marriage of Elizabeth and Michael a few years earlier, believing that she was the daughter of Thomas Morford, who was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Story, wife of Joseph Story of Story Farm. Also signing this document are Robert and Ann Taylor who attest to the lineage, and Abraham Creque who was in the house when Thomas Morford and Lucy Reed lived as man and wife.7.75".
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From - Trenton Federalist 12 Aug 1803
"Notice All persons indebted to the estate of Joseph Smith, late of the island of St. Croix, deceased, by bond,note, or otherwise, are desired to make payment to the subscriber, by the fifth day of September next and all those having demands against said estate, are requested to exhibit their accounts properly attested for settlement.
Crequi History Charlestown/Boston MA Possible links between Y and West Indies
This post is an advisory regarding possible Crequi (Creque) history in
The genealogies and estates of Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1629-1818 by Wyman, Thomas Bellows. ISBN: 0897250311
Info is supposed to be on page 248 of volume 1. Published about 1879
The book is in several US libraries and an online copy is apparently viewable by members of the NEHGS.
I have no idea what the information contains but for those interested in linking the Trumansburg NY and West Indian this might be of value.
Hi Kristine - I have been working on the Abraham CREQUE of NJ family. I have a bunch of the Trumansburg family and they are in RootsWeb's World Connect in my dave-creque file. Several people have helped and I need and appreciate more help. I have added alternate names to many in Ancestry's Census Index. Feel free to throw rocks. dave.richardson@mindspring.com
From - Trenton Federalist 12 Aug 1803 "Notice All persons indebted to the estate of Joseph SMITH, late of the island of St. Croix, deceased, by bond, note, or otherwise, are desired to make payment to the subscriber, by the fifth day of September next and all those having demands against said estate, are requested to exhibit their accounts properly attested for settlement. Abraham CREQUE, admr" Son Joseph married Sarah MORTON went to Bucks Co., PA, Tompkins Co., NY and likely died in Seneca Co., Ohio. Son John married Catherine UPDIKE went to Tompkins Co., NY. Daughter Elizabeth nothing. Son Robert married Sarah then Rebecca went to Warren Co., Ohio and Dick Johnson Co., IN. Daughter Dorothea married John HAMILTON and went to Madison Co., IL. Daughter Winnefred married Ely NLSON but I have not found them in any US census. Daughter Charlotte nothing. Daughter Anna R married Pearson Hutchinson 13 May 1821 Monmouth Co., NJ and lived in Mercer Co., NJ. Son Abraham M. had three wives, Sarah, Sarah, and Elizabeth and lived in Tompkins Co., NY. Son Francis L married Ann and lived in Tompkins Co., NY. Daughter Mary married Asher H. Quigley and lived in Tompkins Co., NY.
Hi, I've been researching the Creque family of the BVI for many years and have recently found some interesting information. The Creque family has been in the BVI at least since the early 1700's. A friend sent me a link to the early BVI census that he had on his website and its quite a find. I am trying now to connect the dots back to the original names on the census. When I do I'll be happy to share the information.
HI, I recently found the Creque family website posted by David Allen Creque and was indeed just looking for him. I'd sent him an email and it came back. Thank you for letting us know that he passed away. I'm sorry to hear the news. I wanted to tell him how fascinated I was with his history back to the 1600's. I believe I am a descendent of the same Francis Crequi and was wondering how David found his birth year of 1600 for St. Croix as well as the birth/death for John and Peter in the 1600-1700's. Do you know or can you help? I have found a Francis Crequi and his family in Virgin Gorda in the early 1700's. Any help would be much appreciated.
Sallie (I noted you have her named Sarah which may be more relable) b. 1814, Herman C. b. 1816, George W. b. 1818, John b. 1819, Catherine b. 1827, Lydia Ann b. 1829, and Jacob U. b. 1832.
I do have much more information on Herman if you are interested.
Hope this is of some help.
Sandi
Hello...My name is Kelley N Creque. I am 25 years old and have lived with this unique and beautiful name all my life. My Grandfather Eggbert V Creque was born 6/10/1920 in the British Virgin Islands. He had 21 Brothers and sisters. I dont know when he left VI but I do know that he Married my Grandmother Ruth B. Ford (born 3/19/1919 in Panama) while living in canal zone Panama (where I dont know). They both moved to New York city, in the early to mid 50's where they had 12 children. From new york city they settled and lived in willingboro, nj for over 40 years until their deaths. I have always been curious about the history of my name and where we "creques" come from. If you can provide any information it would be greatly appreiciated...my personal email is k6nc@aol.com
talk to you "hopefully" soon....
Peter Markoe Creque Boston mid to late 1700's
Trying to identify
Peter Markoe Crequi at Boston Latin School class of 1767. Peter M.Crequi took oath of allegiance to US as Lieutenant 3-7- 1778 Boston
BOSTON PUBLIC LATIN SCHOOL. *Crequie, Peter Markoe 1 * Gordon, Hugh Mackay 2 Lieut.-Gen. in British Army. *1823 *Otis, James 3 Of the Continental Navy. *1777 *Burch, Joseph *Doncker, John 4
1 Peter Crequie, like Christopher Gore, appears to have left this School to become a pupil of Master Hunt at the North Grammar School. In Master Hunt's manuscript Catalogue, to which reference will be made in the following chapter, occurs this amusing memorandum : "Boston, May 27th, 1771. "I, Peter Crequi, engage that Chris. Gore shall punctually observe the rules of this School for three weeks from this date ; and sho'd he break them or any of them within this time, I promise to receive peaceably the punishment due to such Offence with the said Christopher. " Peter Crequi."
Clarence Raymond Creque/Crique/Criqui
My father's mother is Marguerite Marvin Criqui, born in Ashbury Park, NJ, around 1925. Her father was Clarence Raymond (or Raymon) Criqui, married to Marguerite Celia Hull. Not much is known about Clarence. It wasn't found out until after his death that he was born in France. There was some paperwork found that put him in Nancy, France, in his life. He went by either "Ray" or "Raymond" in New Jersey. I don't know if his surname was changed upon arriving to the US. That is all I know of that side of the family. If anyone can help, please.
I have these children for John Cerque [1789-1866] & Catherine Updike [1790-1863] : i Jane Creque b 1809 d 35 Mar 1882 m Walter Duryea ii Sarah Creque b 13 sep 1814 d 14 Aug 1838 m Jacob Vanderbilt iii George Washington Creque b 1818 m Mahala J merritt iv John J Creque jr b 1821 d 23 Feb 1891 m Hetty Slack & Annette B v James M Creque b c 1825 d 27 Nov 1895 m Elizabeth & MInerva vi Adaline Creque b c 1826 vii Lydia Ann Creque b c 1829 d 14 Oct 1913 m Abram Q Blue & Lewis Aldrich viii Jacob U Creque b c 1829 d 10 Apr 1913 m Rachel unk
This does not preclude other children, just that these are the only ones i have been able to identify. The history states that when John & Catherine arrived in Trumansburg in 1812 they had three children already. I only know of one. So there are some missing children. Since they cant be discovered from census, either they died before 1850 or they were girls who married. There is much research left to be done on this family. Please let me know what you are working on and who. Kristine Smith
Does your family tree of the Creque's go back to the early 1800's?
I have a John Creque(b.1812), married to Beulah, living in Pa. in 1880 in my family.
In my research of the Creque family, I found a John & Beulah Creque in Trumansburg NY, in1850. Could they be the same?
It also says his father was born in NJ. I find a John Creque, b. 1786 in NJ, that later died in Trumansburg NY.
Do you know how all these people fit together?
And why is Trumansburg NY such a hotbed for the Creque family?
John
