Andy,

You may be well aware of this but there is an artist, Lee Teter, whose interest in the early American frontier is evident from his paintings based on history and lore. One of his paintings is of Thomas Cresap and Nemesis, a black frontiersman who lived with Cresap (he may well have been a slave, though by all accounts he was well-respected and a preferred hunting companion). Cresap cradles the dying Nemesis, who was killed by Indians on a scouting expedition with Cresap. Negro Mountain in Maryland is named after him. The painting is Teters interpretation of this piece of history, I have no idea of it's actual resemblance to Thomas Cresap. However, I thought you might find it interesting. Here's the link
