Emily Isabel Creswick born London 1874

I am searching for descendants of Emily Isabel CRESWICK, daughter of Charles Frederick CRESWICK and his first wife Eliza Emily FEVER.

Emily was born 12 May 1874 in Hammersmith. Her mother died in 1875 and her father remarried.

Emily married William Frederick HUNTER in Lincolnshire in 1899. They had a daughter Elsie Creswick HUNTER who was born in Darby, Darbyshire in 1902. Emily's husband William died in 1911.

Emily came to Canada with her daughter Elsie in 1912 to join her father in Montreal.

Emily remarried in Verdun, Quebec in 1913 to Robert LLOYD. They had a son Edward LLOYD, born in Verdun in 1914.

Emily is the half-sister of my grandmother Harriet Maria CRESWICK PARNELL. My aunt remembers Auntie Emily and cousins Elsie and "Teddy", but doesn't know what became of them. I would be delighted to connect with any HUNTER or LLOYD cousins.

Sandra Adams
That's interesting, thank you. I've rarely come across anyone changing their name from Criswick to Creswick, usually the other way round. I'll do some more research next year and let you know if i come up with anything.

Regards

Ed Criswick

Hi, I am not a Creswick but my son has just married one! She is from Australia. Hearing that I was keen on family research her father has sent me his family tree (going back to 1797)which I have added to my tree on MyHeritage.com. I have gone back another century by using trees on Ancestry, though I am finding it difficult to check all the information.I have a name spelled four ways and can`t find the source!
Her Australian family began with a young couple, Fred and Ann (nee Steele) CRISWICK, from East Woodhay in Hants, who emigrated in 1841 and appeared to revert to Creswick on the ship`s record, keeping that name. A couple of generations before them had lived in East Woodhay, with the name Criswick, coming originally, of course, from Sheffield as Creswick. I have found gardeners and a silversmith in the family but have not found cutlers yet. I have only been doing this research for a week, so need all the help I can get.
Best regards, Joy.

Hi Gary,
I've just come across your email. It's now 12 months since Mum turned 100 and on the 27 she will be 101. I have posted photos of the birthday and as you can see she is quite well. Thank you for doing so much work on the family. I lost a lot of my history when my computer crashed and am just getting it back. I had emailed my cousing Neil Creswick to get access to what he had on that side of the family, but as yet have not had an answer, but then he is living in the United Arab Repubic.
Mum is quite well and I think she will out live most of us.
Joan

The special day is getting close now.

My grandfather Hilton, (Daniel Leo, now deceased) is Evelyn's second cousin.

Evelyn's grandfather Daniel Hilton is the brother of Daniel Leo Hilton's grandfather, William Hilton (1845-1879).
Hello Sandra. Thank you for your speedy reply. Always satisfying when there is an immediate answer! Thank you also for your lead to Norman's site which I have inspected and for the note about the CRESWICK MORTON connection.
I will contact Norman. It seems a shame that I have this special handwritten Bible record which is in private hands to which I have no further access. It must have a connection to Norman's records.

Elisabeth

Hello Elisabeth,
Norman Froggatt has undertaken a study of the Creswick surname. He is a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies and his email is Creswick@one-name.org. I am sure he would be very interested in your Bible with Creswick names, and he may be able to assist you.

Norman's Creswick website gives various Creswick family trees. It cites a marriage between Richard Creswick and Ann Morton on 4 Dec 1628 in Bradfield:
http://www.normanf.plus.com/CRESWICK/Ewden%20Lodge%20Tree299...

Sandra
Hi Sheena. Just posted a message to Sandra about the Creswicks of Sheffield, Yorkshire. (Copy below)
I see that you mention a Nathaniel C. and that is one of the names on my scans. One of them in 1621 and another in 1624. My husband is related distantly to the CHADBURNs.but know nothing about the Creswicks.
Elisabeth
====================================
Hi Sandra. Just seen your message re Creswick researcher in Sheffield. I have scans of an early Bible with Creswick entries in the sixteen hundreds. There also appears to be related families of MORTON and CHADBURN.
Would you be so kind as to put me in touch with that researcher?
Elisabeth
My email is ncreswick@mxmsecurity.com I have photos etc, also researched the family in England when I lived there and tentatively got back to the sixteenth century or so if I recall. Also did quite a bit of oral history when I came back to Oz whith Arthur and his distant relatives, on other branches of the family, which he still remembered from when he was a boy - I guess Ev would remember them too. I think you guys had already left for SA but I think I left a lot of info with Nancy.

Anyway let me know your email address and I will have a dig around and scan some things and send them to you.

All the best
Neil
Hello David,
I am another descendant of the CRESWICKEs of Hanham Court.

I have come to the same conclusions as you have as to the connection between the BARROWs and the CRESWICKEs, though my notes have only Jane BARROW's baptism and not her marriage. I have not done any personal research on the BARROW line as it is not mine.

However, about 10 years ago I was in touch with a descendant of Thomas Cox BARROW and MaryAnne PERRY, and he also had arrived at this same connection to the CRESWICKES in his research.

My only thought about the Samuel CRESWICKE will that omits John BARROW - "nephew and nieces William BARROW, Sarah BARROW and Fanny BARROW (children of my sister Helen BARROW widow of the City of Bristol) - ten guineas each" - is that possibly he felt that John BARROW would inherit enough as the oldest son.

I haven't downloaded a copy of the Charles ELWES will, but it is available at the documents online site at
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/default.asp

If you wish to compare our BARROW information further, I'd be happy for you to contact me at:
shelverton@one-name.org

Sandra Adams
Relation of the Barrows to the Creswickes of Hanham Court

Hi,

I'm trying to work out the relation of the Barrows to the Creswickes of Hanham Court as mentioned here:

http://tinyurl.com/5hkwgm

Where it says Helen Creswicke's daughter Helen was married to Richard Barrow.

I had been asuming the following ancestry linking the Barrows to the Creswickes:

Hellen Creswicke Garrard
details at freebmd:

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Hellen's parents' marriage at the Scribe's Alcove site:

http://tinyurl.com/5hmvs9

are Jane Barrow and Thomas Garrard.

Jane's Baptism at Scribe's Alcove:

http://tinyurl.com/5j97sc

shows her father as John Barrow.

1851 census says John Barrow was born at Woolaston and another source I have gives the year as 1773.
Enter
Barrow, John, 1773, Woolaston, Baptism
at the Forest of Dean site

http://tinyurl.com/6mc2cq

for details of his baptism. It gives his parents as Richard and Helen.
I was assuming this Richard and Helen are the Richard Barrow and Hellen Creswicke shown at the 1772 marriage at Chepstow Monmouth:

Enter
Creswicke, Hellen, 1772, Chepstow Monmouth, Marriage
at

http://tinyurl.com/6mc2cq

And I was assuming that Jane had named her daughter after her grandmother.

But then I came across the will of Samuel Creswicke, Helen Barrow's brother:

http://tinyurl.com/5z7ok6

which doesn't mention a John Barrow as a beneficiary

and this court case at Chancery

http://tinyurl.com/68mlg7

which mentions the will of Charles Elwes (Helen Barrow's brother in law and has a John Barrow as a beneficiary but doesn't say what the relationship was. So far I haven't found the actual will online.

So I'd be very grateful if someone could confirm or deny the ancestry I had assumed.

Incidentally, Jane Barrow's older brother Thomas Cox Barrow married Mary Ann Perry who was a great- granddaughter of Sir Henry Creswicke's. I'm descended from Jane's and Thomas's younger brother Robert Knapp Barrow, hence my interest.

David Barrow

I have been searching for Paul Creswick, the British author who lived from 1866-1947. I am not finding any Paul Creswick's on any of the old census records in England.

I hope this wasn't a penname. I do suspect Paul may have been his middle name. I have found a couple of James P. Creswick's in Kent in 1901.

Does anybody know anything about his life or family? We are trying to connect him to our international Creswick tree.

Hi Alanna,
I can respond to the Library part of your question - unfortunately, I believe the Librarian Harry Richardson CRESWICK is not closely connected to your Percival CRESWICK from Sheffield.

Harry Richardson CRESWICK (1902 - 1988) and my mother were second cousins. He was Bodley's Librarian from 1945 to 1947, and then Cambridge University Librarian from 1949 until he retired in 1967.

With the help of other CRESWICK researchers, I have traced my line (and Harry Richardson's line) back to the Bristol CRESWICKE's - to Francis CRESWICKE who left the Sheffield area in 1598 and prospered there as a Merchant. He was Mayor of Bristol in 1645.

I know other CRESWICK researchers with closer Sheffield connections that I have watch this list. Likely one of them will be able to assist you.

Best wishes in your research.

Sandra

Greetings,

I am a new researcher, not much experience and wondered if anyone knew of a Percival Creswick b. around 1870-ish in Sheffield area? Percy was my great-grandfather and I believe he was a silversmith who brought his family to the U.S. around 1910? Married to Lillian Speight. Does anyone have links to this fellow in their research? I'm also interested to learn if he's related in any way to the Harold Creswick who headed the Bodlein Library at Oxford.

Thanks,
Alanna

John William Creswick was born in Angus (Forfarshire) Scotland in 1858. He immigrated to America in 1879. I can find his parents and sisters living in the Dundee area and his father appears to be dead in the 1881 census after John had left.

Would like to write to anyone who knows of a Creswick family in Scotland at that time. Also interested in Creswick's who lived on the English/Scottish border - possibly raising sheep. Galashiels was another name mentioned.

I have been researching my maternal grandfather's family and have found the name changed from CRISWICK to Creswick during the mid 1800. This family lived in Wiltshire/Hampshire. With the lack of basic writing skills, I think the spelling of the surname was left to the registrar. There are Criswick's on other sites but, I think, only UK based.

Before the 18th Century it seems that "Creswick" and "Criswick" were interchangeable surnames - I've seen evidence of families that moved from one to the other , and back again! I can't find any evidence of "Criswick" on these message boards so I'm wondering if any of you kind "Creswick" researchers have come across the "Criswick" surname. If so, I'd be grateful for any information. The name exists mainly in England, but there have been a few people of that surname in the States, but references are frustatingly few! Thanks. Ed Criswick.

My 3 x gt grandmother was Emma Creswick, born c 1785, possibly in London. She married, on 10 June 1807, at St Martin in the Fields, London, William Hayton, and they settled in Epsom, Surrey. Among their many children was Mary Hayton, b Epsom 1817 (my 2 x gt grandmother).
I have so far been unable to find out anything about Emma's parentage or origins. I did find (in a book about antique silver!) the names of James and Nathaniel Creswick who were silversmiths in London in the 1850s, but have no idea if these are connected with Emma in any way.
I wondered if you might have either some information on Emma, or some clues as to where I might find her. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Kim
Thanks, John. I have no idea where Emma Creswick came from. It could have been anywhere, as St Martin in the Fields was a real melting-pot of a parish, and people came from all over the country to marry there! So any info you come up with at any time will be most welcome. Thanks again. Kim

Dear Polly

I'm afraid the only information I have on Samuel Creswicke is that he married a Hester, duaghter of John Rake of Freshford, co.Somerset.
Samuel's father Francis purchased Hanham Abbots Court in 1638 was Mayor of Bristol in 1645 and died 1649.
Do you have any information about the later Crewickes, ie the offspring of Sir Henry Creswicke who died in 1668 and was Mayor of Bristol in 1660? I know he had two sons Francis and Humphrey who were 27 and 22 respectively in 1672 but I don't have the rest of the lineage for Hamnham Court down to the last Creswicke owner and his family.

Yours sincerely

John

Creswicks in Illinois from England

Looking for info on William John Creswick from England, thought to be married to Polly Ann Slye when they left England about 1840's. Had at least 1 son, with same name and one daughter, Ann, who married a Perkins in Illinois. Was the preacher married a second time to Anne Bone in Fayette Co., IL? Were there other sibs, maybe a Martha? Please contact at e-mail address. Willing to share what I have thru the mail or phone.

Kim,
I am sorry for getting back to you so late but I have just started a new job and haven't had time to look at your message.
The Creswickes of Hanham Court were originally from Sheffield, Sir Henry Creswicke and his brother Francis were both Lord Mayors of Bristol in the 17th Century.
The Sheffield line appear to have all been silversmiths/tanners, so there may well be a connection there.
Unfortunately I haven't done much research on them but as soon as I do get some information I will be sure to post it on the board for you. I have a family tree which was sent to me by the presesnt owners of Hanham Court (the Crewickes sold it during the 19th Century) so I will have a look at it to see whether there are any London based Creswickes or potential relations of Emma.
Sorry not to be of much help.

John

Bristol Creswickes

John (and others)...

This is to let you know that my family heritage shows that my (9)great-grandfather was Francis Creswicke, and was mayor of Bristol in 1630. It appears that he was the father of the Henry that you are looking for. I have LOTS of information regarding the Creswick family, dating from 1480 to the present. I will email you at your indicated email address.

Bob

The Creswickes

William,
Thank you for your reply.
It is nice to find anyone at all who knew anything about the Crewsickes of Hanham Court. If you do i wonder whether you could help me.
My ancestor, George-Matthews Daubeney (from the Daubeney's of Cote House, Westbury on trym, Bristol) married Elizabeth Creswicke, daughter of Humphry Creswicke of Hanham Court on 28/5/1830. She was born in 1807 and died 22/11/1854.
I wondered whether you might have any lineage of the Creswickes at all. I have one that starts in Sheffield but only finishes at Sir Henry Creswicke and his brother Francis. Do you have anything that would help me get to the 20th century? If you do I wuld be most grateful if I could get any information at all on the family.
My e-mail address is Neill@johnjw.freeserve.co.uk
Thanks again for your response,

Kind regards,

John
