Re: Charles J. Crew - Born abt. 1811 in NC or SC

stacileann - I've been in contact with several of Charles' descendants and the only Josephine Crew that I have in my records is the daughter of Josephus Charles Crew and Permelia Niece "Dydie" Kimbrel -
Birth 18 Dec 1892 in Crews, Winn Parish, Louisiana;
Death 19 Oct 1971 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.

This information does not fit the dates you gave.

It is suspected that Rev. Charles did have a second marriage to Elizabeth Jackson and one child, Jackson Crew. Both Elizabeth and Jackson seem to disappear after they are enumerated in the 1880 census.

I'd be interested in specifics of your Josephine Crew. When and where was she born; when and where did she die. If she died in 1963, do you have her death certificate?

Please contact me at kinfolknews at gmail dot com. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am looking for information concerning Charles J. Crew, Hicksey Bean and their children.

I am specifically trying to find out information that concerns Josephine Crew b. 1881 and reported to be the daughter of Charles and Hicksey. Except that the dates don't add up and so I'm trying to track down the correct info.

I wanted to reply here first even though a personal email was given since this post is many years old. Thank you in advance for any help and or information you may be able to provide! Staci

This is a very old post and so I have high hopes that you are still active on ancestry and will be able to respond.

I find myself needed much of the information that you were asking about in this post. According to information for my family, my 2nd great grandmother was named Josephine Crew. It was reported that she was the daughter of Charles J. Crew and Hicksey Bean. I have went with that for several years until I started paying attention to what Hicksey's age would have been when she had Josephine b.1881 d. 1963.

It just doesn't seem to make much sense and so I'm starting to look at other options, perhaps Charles had a second wife? I should have done this years ago but hopefully the answer can be found out there.

Thank you!

found Crew home recordings 1940's

While going through some items in my moms house I found a box of home recorded records, some clearly have written on the Kathryn Ann Crew 1/21/42. There is also a Tiny Crew 11/29/42. Some are from holidays together and one says remembering pearl harbor. Other names on records without last name include Barby Kay,Kacki+Tiny,Susane F., Jean S., Betty Jean Mc., Sandra, Sue, duet of Helen-Ruth, and Charlie McCarthy. If these belonged to my family I'd love to have them, so if you are related to this Crew family let me know. i'm just trying to get these back to the family.

I have the Ann Crew (dau. of John Crew & Sarah Gatley) is being the one who married William Thomas Lane. Anytime the dates are off 3 months it is probably because the person forgot the year started in March at that time.
Hi,

I'm looking for any information about my dad's father. My dad's name is Dennis Alan Crew and he is the son of May Fletcher (married name). I believe his father was named David Crew, but neither my dad or I know much about him and my dad's mother is deceased. My dad was born in Collingdale, PA, but spent much time in his youth with his mother at the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, so his father could be either from Maryland or Pennsylvania. My dad was born in 1950.

Does anyone have any information about his father/my grandfather?

I am related to Isaac W. Johnson through my grandmother Francis Magnolia (Maggie)Johnson 1873-1947 m: William Alfred Qualls. She is the daughter of Romulous Miles (Milo) Johnson 1816-1894 m: Nancy Payne; Romulous Milo is the son of Isaac W. Johnson 1816-1894 m: Cathlerine Raper. Dudley Alonso is also the son of Isaac Johnson. Isaac is my great, great grandfather. This would make Isaac your GGG grandfather. My mother is Polly Addie Lee Qualls Crew. I believe this is all right. If you would like more information about them please email me at allstarg21@netzero.net Hope this will help.
War Eagle! (Though I am not much into football). I have an M.A. (1959) from Auburn and a PhD (1971) from the competition in Tuscaloosa (;o). 'Roll Eagle'? LOL

My grandfather Wm Louie Crew is buried in the cemetery behind the Presbyterian Church in Goodwater, as are several other family members. I cannot remember whether Wm Louie's father is buried there. As a boy I went down several country roads with my father to put more dirt on various family graves by small churches. That's why both of my parents insisted on having a concrete vault. They are buried in the Forrest Cemetery in Gadsden in the Hagin lot (my mother's family).

By grandparents and my parents were all Baptists, but my great-grandparents were Presbyerians, I believe. The family arrived by the 1640 census in Virginia, as Quakers driven out of England. In the early 1800s they were Quaker 'subversives' for teaching freed slaves to read and write -- then illegal in Virginia. They were kicked out of the Quakers for mustering in the war of 1812.

Apparently several generations of Crews were small town shop owners. In my 20s my father and I tried to find the remeains of 'Crewsville', the town originally settled by the family, but had no luck. We ended up in a cornfield that Dad thought was the location, but it was guesswork from his memory of a visit in his own boyhood.

Good to be in touch. Good luck with your searches.

You can also reach me more directly at lcrew@andromeda.rutgers.edu and at Louie Crew, 377 S.
Oh my goodness, yes! Your father put in a GREAT deal of work in that book having to type it on the old typewriters!!! I was only able to obtain a portion of it from Archives because they said I had to have permission from the author (your dad) and I told them he had passed away but that didn't matter. Then I found another gentleman, Keith Hinson (and don't ask me how because I looked and looked for somebody for a copy of that book :) ) and he was kind enough to send me a copy of his update to the book. We are "kin" somehow but I can't remember exactly how yet. I came from Luther Elvie Crew, (my father), Ludie D. Crew, John Pleas Crew, George Washington Crew and Elisha Crew. If I remember correctly, you and your father was from another brother of one of them. I still get "lost" in all the Crews! Thank you SO MUCH for those links. I will definitely take a look. I have tried to get further back than Elisha but it then gets real confusing with all the James, Anns, etc. So you are at Rutgers. I am TOTALLY impressed. I am still about 3 miles from the Coosa County line in Elmore County. :) :) So I spend a pretty good bit of time "trapsing the woods" there. My sister and I got lost this past summer on a LONG road and ended up on top of a mountain with a BEAUTIFUL view so all was not lost. I am hunting all the Crew graves I can find. Lots of them in the Rockford Cemetery. Have you found my tree? I have a lot of the grave photos on there if you are interested. Crew-Brown-Parrish-Turner/Coosa, Elmore, Chilton, Autauga. And many more because when I reach a dead end, I take off in another direction! :) :) Again, it was nice meeting and talking to you and thank you again for the sites. I did not know your father but after the work I saw, I totally respected him. It must have taken him YEARS and how many trips to places to do that book! It has been a great source of reference for me. I don't know if you are in to football, but War Eagle anyway (Auburn University) Thank you again. Rita Crew Burner

Hi my name is Heather Robbins Turney. My Husband Jason is Vera Delpha Crew- Whitlatch's grandson. While Talking with Delpha, she mentions that Timothy Elison Crew was previously married and had three older children. Their names were Arvin, Ralph, and Ruth. I located on the 1920 Census The three children listed with a K.E. Crew dates and location of birth are the same, and is believed to be the same person. Delpha also, I believe has in her possession a marriage certificate for Timothy and Lily Dryer dated May 11, 1921

Francis Howard 'Fritz' Crew

OXFORD, Iowa -- Francis Howard 'Fritz' Crew, 72, Oxford, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Services are at West Branch United Methodist Church, West Branch. The Rev. Scot Patrick will officiate. Burial will be at the West Branch Cemetery.

Visitation is at Barker Funeral Home, West Branch. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

Mr. Crew was born Jan. 13, 1932, on a farm north of Springdale, the son of Alice Gruwell Crew and Rollo Crew. He married Darlene Boots Nov. 17, 1957, in Cedar Rapids.

In his younger days, he enjoyed coon, fox and deer hunting, and fishing all night at his brother's cabin. In older days, he fished with the grandchildren. He thought the most fun was going to grandchildren's sports events - soccer in Dike, basketball and football in Williamsburg and other school events. He and his wife also enjoyed antiquing and he had an extensive collection of knife rests and purple slag. He was a former member of the Masons and a 50-year member of the American Legion.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was proud of an engraved pen and pencil set the men of his company gave him. After being discharged from the Army, he worked with his brothers, Fred and Clarence, at Clarence Crew Construction. In 1962 he began working at Farmers Feed in West Branch with his father and purchased the business in 1965. He was generous to a fault and during the farm crisis in the 1970's many customers ran up bills they couldn't pay. The business closed in 1980. He raised hogs with his son, Kirk, for a few years and in 1995 formed C & M Lawn Care with partner Jerry Michel tending several rest areas on Interstates 80 and 380, until being diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2003.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Christopher of rural Norway and Kirk of rural Williamsburg; grandchildren, Vanessa, Tyler Francis, and John, all of Dike, Theresa Von Ahsen and husband, Nathan, of Hinesville, Ga., and Nicole and Jeffrey, both of rural Williamsburg; three sisters, Madeline Espensen and husband, Herb, Betty Slach and Vernetta Ruzek and husband, Burdette, all of West Branch; two brothers, Fred Crew and wife, JoAnne, and Clarence Crew and wife, MaryAnn, all of West Branch; a large extended family; and the mothers of his grandchildren, Valerie Crew of Dike and Carolyn Crew of Williamsburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Floyd Allen at age 5; a sister-in-law, Shirley Crew; and a brother-in-law, Richard Slach.

From what I can gather from the records I have where a Mr. Erman Crew did EXTENSIVE research on the Crew family, he found more than 100 people named Crew in the Quaker records of early Virginia and North Carolina. Although there were several states where they were Quakers. Some moved to Ohio. I cannot find a John Crew born around 1809 or a John J. Crew born around 1841 in these records. Is there anything else you can tell me that I might could possibly find in my records? A lot of the Crews left Virginia and migrated to Georgia and a lot of them from North Carolina did the same. And then a lot of them that migrated to Georgia, then migrated to Alabama. I will keep my eyes open as I am looking but if you have anything else that might could help, I would be glad to help you. There is a Bibliography in the back of the book and some of the entries might help you:

Early Virginia Emigrants, 1628-1666, Greet
Encyclopedia of American Quaker Records Vols. I, IV and VI, William Wade Hinshaw
History of the People of Virginia, John Esten Cooke, Houghton Mifflin Company, N.Y. 1883
Life in Old Virginia, James J. McDonald, Old Virginia Publishing Co., Norfolk, VA 1907
Cavaliers and Pioneers, Virginia Land Patents, 1623-1666, Nugent. Sorry I couldn't be more of help but I will keep a look out for you too. Rita Crew Turner----a lot of the early people were in Charles City County if that might help you. The Quakers were treated with a harshness that was degrading. There were also many Quakers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolin and Virginia but no mention here of Missouri. He did mention the early records of the Quakers minutes were very helpful in tracking moves of our Crew famil in migrations to the South and the West. He type the records on each individual but did NOT include the records of cousins. Could your Johns possibly be cousins? Let me know if you have something else.

Rita, I am looking for John Crew b: 1809,Va. and John J Crew b. 1841 also in Va. They were thought to be Quakers and the family was thought to be from England? They are listed in the Missouri census in the late 1800's and the early 1900's. The census states born in VA. but lists no mother and father, county or city. Can you help with these names?

I am researching Eduard Crews that came to America and settled with his family in Maryland. I would be most interested in what notes you would share concerning the family.
Thank you.

Hello,
I am replying to your message to Gerald. I am researching the Eduard E Crews that sailed from England with his family and settled on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The family story goes that he was supposed to be an heir to his father's fortune. He was out to sea when his father died and when he came home the elder brother,by English law, claimed all of it. Edward promptly set sail again, bought and sold some slaves as he was broke. He came to Maryland and settled in, what was then QA Cty. I have his will dated 1787 although he was alive for the 1880 census What you mentioned about Crewe,England seems to verify the family story.
Hope you can help me. Thank you.
Delores C Jones
dcj@dmv.com
home address:
150 Flatland Rd. 60
Chestertown, Md 21620
Thank you for the information. Please consider DNA testing if you have a male Crews in this line. It would be most helpful to our study.

Vanessa Crews

I have traced back my family to a John or James Crew born about 1814, but do not know what state. He married a Maragaret Stradley who was born in 1837 in Maryland. Their child, Samuel Jackson Crew, was born May 15, 1864 in Chester Parish, MD and died October 28, 1915 in Salem, NJ.

Saw your entry of a James Crew for 1815.
