Mary and Hannah's parents were William and Elizabeth Denis (or Deny) Chribbs. (William definitely spelled his name "Chribbs.") I will post full information and citations on a website about them when I have completed my research.
William was a fascinating character who was a merchant along the Ohio and Missippi Rivers with activities centered at Fort Massac in the decade before and after 1800. He appears in court cases in Cincinnati, St. Genevieve, St. Louis, Randolph Co. (Indiana Terr./Illinois) and Louisiana. He had a connection to the infamous General Wilkinson and briefly served as Collector for the District of Massac. His original 1801 appointment certificate to that position, signed by both President Jefferson and then-Secretary of State Madison, is in the Tennessee State Archives. Secretary of State Gallatin later described Chribbs as "notorious" in a letter to President Jefferson and told Jefferson that he had to be removed. Chribbs had a running feud with the commandant at Fort Massac, Captain Daniel Bissell, who succeeded Chribbs as Collector and who had an affair with Chribbs's wife. Court cases ensued. About 1808, Chribbs either died or was divorced. Elizabeth then married Drury Prichard in 1809 and within a few years they moved to Missouri. Elizabeth's second marriage when Hannah was 9 or 10 explains why some researchers give Hannah's maiden name as Prichard or Prichett. It also explains why, about 1820, Hannah's husband George Washington Evans Sr bought property in central Missouri jointly with a Drury Prichard, who was either his wife's step-father or perhaps her step-brother. I have yet to run across children of William and Elizabeth other than Mary and Hannah, but indications are that their household was larger.
Cullen Cribbs Brown's mother's name was rebecca jane inabnet daughter of joseph inabnet. She married Joel Brown who was born in Bone Gap, Illinois and served in the Union Army in the Civil War. Email me if you wish to have more info on the Inabnets. Cullen was not listed on his father's household in 1880 because he was not born until 1882. The 1890 cenus is not available. By 1900 he had left home and lived with the Osborne family in Dry Grove, Hinds Co, MS. His other siblings were living in the delta by 1900. They are incorrctly identified as black in the 1900 cenus. Rebecca had passed away around 1888 and Joel was not listed with the family in 1900.

I have Cribbs relatives from Indiana County PA and my great, great grandmother was Sarah Cribbs. Her father was George Cribbs born in the late 1700's. He had a brother named Jacob and his father was John George Cribbs. Do you think there was any possible relation? For the record I live in New Phildelphia OH. Also, my gggrandmother Sarah married Rev. Greenberry (G.A. or George) Compton and if anyone might have info on them I would appreciate it. Thanx Gary

Wendy, I just posted a reply in this thread. I asked Joe if he knew anything about the location of the land that had been Gilbert Dunlap's and was sold to JAMES BARR.
I descend from Gilbert Dunlap and Agnes; through Thomas Greer (b. abt 1730) who married Jane Dunlap; their son Wm Greer Sr, wife Sarah ?-Corry. The daughter of Wm and Sarah Greer, also named Sarah (called Sally) m. Felix Simonton. These were my 4th gr grandparents. Felix Simonton's grandparents, Theophilus Simonton and Mary Smith, received from Mary's brother, Archibald Smith, d. 1729, left Will, Lewes, Sussex Co DE, land formerly owned by JAMES BARR. It was a tract of 300 acres. Do you have any idea where this land was? Theophilus and Mary settled in Conestoga Manor, Lancaster Co PA, not sure if they were there in 1729. Thanks...Jackie Helmke Jhelmke@sbcglobal.net

Joe, I descend from Gilbert Dunlap and wife, Agnes; through their child Jane Dunlap who married Thomas Greer (he born abt 1730-died 1793, GA); and their child Wm Greer Sr., b. 1754, PA, married Sarah ?-Corry; lived in GA. A daughter of Wm and Sarah Greer, Sarah (Sally) b. 1793, GA, married Felix Simonton. Felix and Sally were my gr gr gr grandparents. Do you know where this land was?
My Felix Simonton was the gr grandson of Theophilus Simonton and wife Mary Smith. Mary's brother, Archibald Smith, his Will, 1729, Lewes, Sussex Co DE, left land to Mary, a tract of land, formerly JAMES BARR'S, containing 300 acres.
Teresa,

Jacob, John and Peter were common Cribbs family names. My grandfather - Jacob John Cribbs was born in Ohio. In the late 18th or early 19th century two Cribbs brother went separate ways, one to Alabama and one to Ohio. They were potters and each headed for places that had clay. Peter Cribbs moved from Pennsylvania to Tuscarawas Co., Ohio in 1807 to help pioneer the town of New Philadelphia. Jacob Cribbs moved to Greene Co., AL, and later to Tuscaloosa Co.

Hope this helps.

David

Hi: Your Ferris Napoleon Cribbs is the son of Daniel Sheffield Cribbs and Ella Perry. Daniel is the son of Owen Brannick Cribbs and Rutha Jane Powell. Ferris and Theresa had Chiver Donald Cribbs, Erwin Joseph, Edna (your McLendon) Gerard Raymond, John Joseph, Basil John, and Anthony. I know the names are a little strange but the info came from Donald & Phyllis Cribbs. My e-mail is Lillyvlw@hotmail.com

Hi,

I'm curious about your ancestor, Joseph Montague White. I have been researching a Joseph Montague White for many years but have been unable to find his origins. I'm wondering if there may be a connection somewhere. My Joseph Montague White was born in 1843 in either Arkansas or Tennessee depending on which census you want to believe. He appears in the 1850 Tishomingo County, Mississippi census with his presumed mother Nancy as head of household (with presumed siblings: Martha Ann, John, Jabez, and Allen). Nancy was sait to have been born in Tennessee. He married in Tippah County, Mississippi, and was there most of his life although the 1880 census has him in Hardeman County, TN. Do you know of any allied families to your Whites who may have had a son, Joseph Montague, who could fit with mine? Thanks.

My GGGgrandfather "William Fredrick Cribbs" was married to Hester (Esther) Wilson and they had a son Winfield Scott Cribbs who was born in 1861.
On 7Aug1861 William enlisted in Company A, 83rd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in Titusille, PA
William was injured on the 1st of July in 1862 in the battle at Malvern Hill in Virginia.
He died on the 9th of July in 1862 as a result of his wounds.
For reasons unknown Winfield was raised by his grandparents John I and Elizabeth (Eliza) Hall Wilson.
Winfield Scott used the Wilson surname and we knew him as Scott Wilson.
Scott married Amanda Jane Lewis and they raised their family in DuBois Pa. Scott and Amanda are buried in the Salem Cemetery in DuBois Pa. "W Scott Wilson" is inscribed on his gravestone.
Scott's mother Esther remarried a Henderson and is buried in the same cemetery as Scott.
I'm searching for any information on William's parents, siblings and their decendents.
Thanks
Dennis Hart
Re: J.W. Cribbs Houston, Tx

I have a 38 page Word document that includes this family line since they married into my direct Thompson family line. I'm willing to share notes with anyone connected to these branches of the Cribbs family line. Gladys Etta Thompson married John Buchanan Cribbs and had the following children: Thomas H. Cribbs (d. 1 1/2 yrs), Clarence Lee Cribbs (d. age 8), Jessie Bell Cribbs (b.1927 d.1928), Mary Cribbs, Lloyd Arthur Cribbs, Bonnie Pearl Cribbs (Ryan), Billie Frances Cribbs (Payne), Lucille Dollie Cribbs (Wauson), John Winright Cribbs. Gladys Etta & John Buchanan Cribbs are both buried at Resthaven Cemetery, Houston, Harris County, TX. Thomas H. Cribbs is buried at Forest Lawn Burial Park, Lovefield, Dallas, TX. Clarence Lee Cribbs is buried at Arp, Smith County, TX. Jessie Bell is buried at Dalfar, Texas.
I also have some other Cribbs / Thompson family lines in addition to this one. I'll be glad to share notes with anyone from these family lines: Stella Ward Thompson m. William Alexander Cribbs, James Odus Thompson m. Eliza Leon Berry Cribbs, and Maggie Ida Lou Thompson m. John P. Cribbs. Stella, James Odus & Maggie Ida Lou were siblings, all children of William Washington "Willie" Thompson & Martha Jane Screws Thompson.
If possible, contact me directly at jab50@bellsouth.net I don't visit the message boards much but just happened to catch this line of thought from several of you. (And, that includes you too, Bill, if you ever want to read over my Word document, just let me know).
Jane
