I was just telling my husband about how much I enjoyed going to your house when you lived in Downey. I remember touching star fish that the boys brought back from scuba diving. There was a little cradle that Big Don made for me that I kept my favorite Pooh Bear in, and I remember being very sad when you left California. I think you must have made the little mattress, pillow and blanket for the cradle...fond memories.

Oh, great to hear from you. I had heard about Don in 2008. I was sad to hear that. My Aunt Rosa Mae seems to be at more reunions than anyone, so she gives us some info on the family that we don't live near. We should share via email. I'm curious to see how far on Criddle you've gotten. I do a lot of family history these days, but most of what I have on Criddle is from other people. Email me at kristy_knight88@hotmail.com

Hi Kristy, So nice to hear from you. I remember you, you were our little girl and we loved you so much. Brad lives in Calif, Cal is in china working and Donald passed away in 2008. We miss him terribly.
I have been trying to further Don's family history for him. Don and I live in Utah. We've been here since 1980. We are doing well. I have had problems getting anything back on the Criddle line. I have the Lyons, line. Grandma amy's line. P

Hi Janet, this is Kristy, Inez's daughter. I remember going to your house when you lived in Downey. I was little and used to hang out with the dogs...there was a doberman (named Lady?) and then a little one. I remember looking up to your boys and wanting to walk around w/out my shirt on when they didn't have their shirts on. I must have been 3 or 4. I have done a lot of additional family history on top of what my mom and other relatives did. I believe you are living in Utah now? I am in Arizona.

Hello, Thank you for the information. It's been very hard to trace back that far since my grandmother (Mary Lou) passed away. She was always my source of information regarding names. What was your grandmohter's name? My mom told me she remembers going to Fairfield, CA to visit her grandmothers (Birdie)sister, Aunt Vera. I know this side of the family was born and raised back east and came to CA when they were in their early 20's...some stayed and some returned home.

Thanks again for contacting me. Any info you have would be wonderful. Lisa

Hi. C B Criddle was my cousin. He was one of 4 brothers.Smith, Charles Barrington, Whitfield,& Edward Scruggs Criddle. They were all old men when I was a child. The only children that I knew of was E S Criddle or "Chug's". They lived in Columbia Tn. The boys were the sons of SmithCriddle, born 1808, brother of my great grand mother Mary Criddle, amd Lucy Whitfield born 1813 in Franklin He was from Davidson Co. They married in 1832 & moved to Paris, Tn where they had four children, Mary 1833, Smith, Whitfield, and Tennessee, called Tennie. Smith died of typhoid in 1845. Lucy moved back to Franklin where her children were raised. She died in 1892 & is burried in our family plot at Mt. Olivet in Nashville. There is a book called THE KITH AND KIN OF CAPTAIN JAMES LEEPER AND SUSAN DRAKE, HIS WIFE. It takes theWhitfield and Drakes and Criddles back four or five more generations. You might try to get a copy. I forget the author, but I can get the name for you. My daughter has my copy in South Carolina. You might want to pick up on the Whitfield and Drake lines, they were very interesting people. There is another book on the Scruggs,by a Mrs Campbell, which has been reprinted I believe that it also has some Criddle info.I have much more, my grandfather, Edward Criddle Scruggs was the 4 boys guardian after Smith's death. I don't really want to write a long history here as you my already know much of it. I don't want to put my phone number on line, but if you email me, I will give it to you.

I am new to the search of my roots... My parents are not much help so I am starting from scratch. My grandma's name (Mary Criddle - Graham after she was married) was Berdie (or Bertie as I have seen it on here) maiden name Hickinbotham. I've always been told she was part American Indian. She was married to Victor Criddle (who has very deep roots in the south). Berdie divorced Victor and remarried to Clarence Holliday (whom she is burried next to). I am trying to find out who her parents were and so forth. Would eventally like to find out what tribe they came from. THis has been an exciting adventure to see how far back I can trace my family roots.. Let the good times roll... :)

Looks like Charles Barrington Criddle was a son of Wm Smith Criddle, so would be your line. If you email me at jrenwick@otherside.com, I will scan and send the obit.

A quick look shows that the obit I remembered was of William Smith Criddle of Nashville. Is that of interest to you? If so, I can scan it and send, if you wish.

I believe CB may have been a cousin of my Criddle ancestors. As I recall (but have not checked), I may have a newspaper clipping about him; the name (and definitely the Nashville connection) seems familiar. I realize your post was more than 3 years ago, but maybe you'll see this.....

First you need to tell them that you you family is African American. I didn't say that "Criddle" is the original spelling of "Crittle". 1st your family name has all way been "Crittle". 2nd we share a common ancestor Oliver "Ollie" Criddle he was born on a Criddle plantation in Virginia in 1820. This would also include West Virginia. WV did not become a state until 1850. Also Criddle Plantation made a point of change the last names of there slaves they sold to "Crittle" so there was a clear distention between there descendant and there slave descendant. The large groups of African American Crittle in GA, MS, FL MI, IL, LA are all descendant of Criddle Plantation. But call your sister rene and get my number from her and let's talk
That would been
Mose Crittle Jr

My name is Michael Crittle I live in Pineville Louisiana. Recently someone contacted my cousin and told him there used to be a plantation in Louisiana called Criddle plantation. They in fact told him that Criddle was the original spelling and that it was odd the way we spell ours. I am very interested in learning my family history on my fathers side if anyone could share some information.
