Classification: Query
Surnames: Crider, Wilkes, Bozeman, Arnold, Ruple, Massey, Boyd
I have done a bit of work on John Crider, many of his children have been given to his nephew Frederick Crider. Since Frederick stays in the same place 1820-1860 he is easy to find while uncle John like to move and hide. My line is from Elijah Crider son of John Crider.

2. Conrad2 Crider (Joseph1) was born in 1742 at Orangeburg, SC. He married Regina Bastin. He married an unknown person. He died.
He In Mississippi by 1820, in Franklin County by 1830. He began military service Rev.War vet.
Children of Conrad2 Crider include:
+ 11 i. Frederick3 Crider was born in 1764 at Orangeburg, SC. He married Susannah Campbell circa 1798 at SC, Usa. He married Susannah Arnold circa 1809 at SC. He died in 1862 at Franklin, MS.

7. Johannes "John"2 Crider (Joseph1) was born on 19 Feb 1751 at Orangeburg, SC (19 Feb 1757, ? I have also seen May 1757). He was baptized in May 1757 at Orangeburg, SC, USA. He married Rachel (Crider) after 1780 at SC. He died after 1840 at Copiah or Madison, MS.
He began military service at GA??, USA, need more research. Back in the late 80's I was told he served as a solider in GA.

One John Crider was in 1st Regiment of the Light Dragoons in the Continental Troops. The 1st Continental Light Dragoons also known as Bland's Horse was organized between 13 June and 10 September 1776 in Williamsburg, Virginia from eastern and northern Virginia for service with the Continental Army. It was authorized 8 June 1776 in the Virginia State Troops as the 1st, 2d, 3d, 4th, 5th(Captain Henry Lee) and 6th Troops of Light Horse. On 25 June 1776 it was redesignated as the Virginia Light Horse. It was adopted and then assigned to the main Continental Army and redesignated as the 1st Continental Light Dragoon on 25 November 1776. On 7 April 1778 Lee's Troop was replaced by Captain Addison Lewis's troop. Lee's Troop then formed the 2d Partisan Corps or better known as Lee's Legion. The 1st Continental Light Dragoons was re-assigned to the Southern Department on 8 November 1778. The unit was re-organized on 1 January 1781 comprising of four mounted and two dismounted troops and was then redesignated as the 1st Legionary Corps. On 2 November 1782 the unit was consolidated with the 3d Continental Light Dragoon Regiment maintaining five troops. The regiment would see action at the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown and the Battle of Guilford Court House. The regiment was disbanded on November 15, 1783 at Winchester, Virginia.

Another John Crider is listed in Lucian Lamar Knight’s Georgia’s Roster of the Revolution. In Crider’s case, Knight includes him on a list of Franklin County , Georgia RW soldiers and widows who were given an extra draw or lot in the 1825 Georgia Land Lottery because of Revolutionary War service. In the case of the John Crider of Franklin County GA, he appears on the 1830 census in Franklin GA.

As of 1800, Johannes "John" Crider (or the family of) lived at Orange, Orangeburg, SC. They appeared on the census (John Cryder page would not load, need to see age of this John). As of 1830, Johannes "John" Crider (or the family of) lived at Copiah? Franklin?, MS, USA. They appeared on the census (needs more research, where is he, he should be in Copiah). He had deed sold land Section 25, Twp 9 North, Range 6 East. This was land he got in 1825 in 1836 at Copiah, MS, USA.

The unknown date Lawrence county state census give his household as 2-1-1-1 total 5. The state census list a Benjamin Massey in 1860 State census. 14. William (not proved)3 Crider (Johannes2, Joseph1) was born in 1802 at SC/KY (1802-1804). He married Terrisa Ray either 11 Sep 1823 or 14 Sep 1823 at Tuscaloosa, AL. He died between 1840 and 1850 at MS.
He came to Copaih County. Why? If John Crider was his father and he had died or was ill. William Crider may of left AL and came to Copaih to be with rest of family.

LeeAnn Crider Hickman, says... William Cridermarried Terrisa Ray on Sept 11 or 14, 1823 in Tuscaloosa Alabama. They had 3 children. The first was James N. born 1828 in Alabama, the other 2, Sarah A. b. 1831 and Elbert J. b. 1833 were born in Copiah, Mississippi. I found the 1830 census with William and wife and 1 male child in Bibb Alabama. I could not find much else about William and Terrisa after that. Terrisa's father was Frederick Ray. She is mentioned in his will as daughter Tressie Crider. You can find Frederick Ray in Tuscaloosa Alabama. He was a prominent citizen and was in the Revolutionary War. He was born in Virginia. He moved to Tuscaloosa and owned land and was a Methodist Reverand who helped founded the Hopewell Methodist Society.

I have also found John Cryder in Copiah and I believe it to be Johanne Crider. He has land near Elijah Crider, but then he kind of disappears. He is only on the taxpayers records for 1826.

I then found Elbert living with his sister Sarah in 1850 census when he was 17. Sarah had married a man named Richard Coleman Mathews. He, too was from a prominent family They had several children and Sarah died in 1910. Elbert became a prominent citizen as well as a Baptist Minister in Tuscaloosa. You can find several mentions of him in The Tuscaloosa Times 1887-1891. He was also a part of the Democratic Party.

My lineage actually comes down through James. It has been really difficult finding information on them.

I found both James and Elbert in the 1885 Alabama state census.

I found information about Frederick Ray in "Pioneers of Tuscaloosa County Alabama Prior to 1830" by Tuscaloosa Genealogical Society, Tuscaloosa, Alabama 1981

I do not have proof that William is their son. I am basing it on the assumption that he moved to Copiah for some reason, which I believe is to be near family. I think that William died before 1840, and Terrisa died before 1850, and that is why the children are back in Tuscaloosa. As of 1830, William (not proved) Crider (or the family of) lived at Bibb, AL. They appeared on the census.
Children of William (not proved)3 Crider and Terrisa Ray were as follows:

Crider 14 Viola L. Crider 7 Jas T. Crider 9 V. V. V. L. Crider 5 Bell Dixie Crider 2). As of 1900, Elbert J Crider (or the family of) lived at Tuscaloosa, AL. He appeared on the census (Elbert J Crider 67MS/KY/GA (Apr 1833), Martha H Crider 61 (Jun1833)).

15. Rachel (not proved)3 Crider (Johannes2, Joseph1) was born before 1800 at Orangeburg, SC. She married Jacob Ruple on 15 Mar 1821 at Franklin, MS. She died between 1835 and 1840 at Franklin, MS.
She needs more research. Since Jacob Ruple was the witness for Elijah Crider to marry Elizabeth Wilkes it would seem more likely he was a brother in law than husband of a second cousin. In 1825 land patents Jacob Ruple had land next to John Crider Section 25 T9N R6E. By 1830 census shows Jacob Ruple back in Franklin. Another question I have is while the 1840 census only show 2 children and no wife; the 1850 census appears to have 4 children. She was land patent had land patented in Section 25 T9 R6 This was beside John Crider's 80 acres in same section. Need to follow up who this sold to and when as Jacob Ruples soon return to Franklin County in 1825 at Copiah, MS. As of 1830, Rachel (not proved) Crider (or the family of) lived at Franklin, MS. They appeared on the census (1100010000-110001000). As of 1840, Rachel (not proved) Crider (or the family of) lived at Franklin, MS.
