I am a Crifasi from Brooklyn NY but more importantly our roots are from Montevago, Sicily a small farming community south of Palermo. Many Crifasis were killed in a 1960's earthquake in Montevago. Lucia Crifasi was killed in the attack on the world trade center. The Crifasi name goes back to the first name of the son of a 10th century Byzantine General under Constantine based in Messina, Sicily. He (his name escapes me) had partial success in removing the Moors from Sicily. So there is a possibility that we have Greek heritage. At some point the family migrated from Messina to Montevago.

My name is Pete Crifasi and my father was Jasper Peter Crifasi. His father and mother came from Sicily by boat. When my grandfather came over, his cousins failed to disembark in New York and ended up in Baton Rouge, La. After my grandmother, Katerina Piazza married my grandfather, the Crifasi family lived next to Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, NY. for a time. My father was the only Crifasi to move to Georgia. He and uncle Jack Crifasi, of Long Beach, Long Island, N. Y., worked together to compile the family history you mentioned receiving. There were four children in my father's family, three born in the United States and the oldest, Francesco in Sicily. All are dead except Rose, who lives near Miami, Fl. with her son. My family was raised in Georgia. I currently live in North Carolina. I was given the family history and crest you mentioned some years ago, but lost it when moving. I would be interested in obtaining a copy of it. Please let me know if a copy might be available.

Respectfully,

Pete Crifasi

My name is John Griffo; My granfather's name as it appears on my father's (Giacoamo Crifasi born in Brooklyn - 1904) birth certificate is Calogero Crifasi. Calogero was born in Montevago, Sicily not too far from Corleone and about 35 miles southwest of Palermo. His name as it appears on the ships manifest (1897 approx). is Calogero Crisafi. I understand that it was common to have the s anf f reversed. Coincidentally Calogero owned a barber shop (thus the name Griffo on the sign)and pool hall in Brooklyn. I am not aware of any other Crisafi's in the US that are relatives.

Crifasi family links from Brooklyn New York to Georgia and Lousiana

Does anyone have any information linking the Crifasi's on Brooklyn New York to the other Crifasi's in Louisiana and Georgia? Benedeto Crifasi is my great grandfather. He was a Barber in Brooklyn New York. He came to NY from Sicily in 1916. From (I think) the provence of Trabana (sp?) His wife was Francesca Avvento. His son, Dante Crifasi (actual given name is Dominick Dante Crifasi) moved to California and was in the Army. Dante joined the Army in 1943. He went inactive in 1969. Benedeto also had a son named Frank Crifasi, who is a retired Chiropractor in New York and a daughter Mary Crifasi who passed away a long time ago. I am the grand-daughter of Dante Crifasi. The majority of my Crifasi family came to California from New York...but I know we also have cousins in Lousiana and Georgia. I'm having a hard time finding all the links though. I'm coming across a lot of missing holes. I know that Benedeto had 3 brothers: Sam, Charles and Nick; and 1 sister: Frances. I also know that Jack, Peter and Rose are second (or third) cousins of Dante Crifasi and that Peter was a florist in Georgia. Also, I have information going back to the year 960 from Jack and Peter Crifasi of Georgia...this includes the origin of the Crifasi name. This was given to me by my grandfather, Dante Crifasi. Jack and Peter very thorough in their research, going to Italy to find quite a bit of information about the Crifasi origins. I also have a copy of the Crifasi family coat of arms and of the Crifasi family motto. It is simply beautiful, but I'm having trouble finding the links from Jack, Peter, Francesco and Rose in Georgia/Lousiana to my branch of the family. Supposedly, they are 2nd or 3rd cousins of my Grandfather, Dante Crifasi. If you have any information about any Crifasi's at all...I would love to hear about it.

Re: B. CRIFASI

Could it be Benedeto Crifasi? Benedeto was a Barber in Brooklyn New York. Benedeto also had a son named Frank Crifasi, who is a retired Chiropractor in New York and a daughter Mary Crifasi who passed away a long time ago. I am the grand daughter of Dante Crifasi. The majority of my Crifasi family came to California from New York...but I know we also have cousins in Lousiana. I'm having a hard time finding all the links though. I'm coming across a lot of missing holes. I know that Benedeto had 3 brothers: Sam, Charles and Nick; and 1 sister: Frances. I also know that Jack, Peter and Rose are second cousins of Dante Crifasi and that Peter was a florist in Georgia. Also, I have information going back to the year 960 from Jack Crifasi...this includes the origin of the Crifasi name. But I'm having trouble finding the links from Jack, Peter, Francesco and Rose to my branch of the family. If you have any information about any Crifasi's at all...I would love to hear about it.

Mary,
I am so excited to hear from you. If your cousin is Fr. Crifasi of Baton Rouge, I am especially happy to hear from you. He did a good bit of research for me . In these records our lineage seem to cross as perhaps distant cousins. I have been concerned as to his health and called the church but the Spanish speaking lady only told me he no longer did research. Please email me at LMBSL@AOL.com

My great grandfather was Pietro Crifasi from Montevago, Siciliy. My grandfather, Peter Crifasi Jr., is now deceased. He died in 1998. He was 85 years old. His mothers name was Sarah Giglio. My cousin, Father Peter Crifasi traveled to montevago in his younger years (70's) to trace the family. I will visit him soon at the nursing home. He speaks very little as he has had a stroke, but he does have the information on the family. By the way, there middle names were Joseph as is my son.
