An obituary in the Cumberland Evening Times (October 29, 1945) for Emma Virginia DeMoss, 77, states that she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Elmira (Vohon) Chrismore, and that Emma DeMoss was born in Winchester, VA.

Hi Elaine,

Rachel Wright was the youngest daughter of George Wright, a Revolutionary War soldier. I do not know the name of George's wife - there are several possibilities. George enlisted in Berkeley County, and died in Frederick County in 1832. His pension papers state that he lived in Frederick 30 years before his death.

Rachel was born about 1803 and was first married to Uriah Marple 8 Feb 1821. They had a son Harrison born about 1822. After Uriah's death she married John Chrismore, 26 May 1826. John Chrysman died at age 54 years, 3 months - no date given, Frederick County Death Register. According to the Register Rachel died 18 July 1881, age 87 years and 1 month. The 1880 Census gives her age as 76, so maybe the registrar meant to write her age as 78?? The 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Censuses show her birthyear to be 1803/1804.

In the Yeakley Cemetery off Route 608, Frederick County, there is a large modern stone with the following inscription:

1769 Anthony Chrismore 1832
His Wife Mary
1799 John W. Chrismore 1854
1799 Rachel Ann Wright 1882
1830 James W. Chrismore 1860
1833 Mary C. Fleet 1871

So you see the dates do not agree. I have been to this cemetery - wish I had taken a photo.

I once spoke with a Chrismore descendant who lives in Winchester and she told me her great aunt had put some records together. I have never followed up with a visit (which I should do), probably because she did not seem especially interested at the time. And of course I can't find my notes of our conversation at the moment. However, she told me that Anthony's wife was Elmira BOHON.

How are you connected to this family? Rachel's sister Nancy, b 1795, married William Elliott, is my great great grandmother. Hope this helps , you may email me at lmarb@cox.net if you wish.. Lois Marbert

Anne,
I am so glad someone else in the family is looking! Thanks for the information. As you know, every little detail helps. I agree totally about the name - so far, I have seen it spelled Chrismore, Crismore, Crissmore, and Christmore. I know a little German, so I have wondered if the original name was spelled with a K, not a C. Hmm...
I haven't spent much time with this branch, but I need to give it more attention - and will now that I know I have a cousin to share with!
I am sending to your personal email the information I have from Charles Cochran, whose research was done in the 1980s. There's not a lot, but you might find it interesting and helpful.
Let's keep in touch!
Elaine

Hi again-
Yes, Elizabeth is my ancestor. I don't know much about her brother John. I don't know anything about the Vaughns, sorry.

I do know that the Chrismore family originally came from Pennsylvania, perhaps in or near Adams county. Both John and Elizabeth were born there. Elizabeth was born in 1799 and John was born in 1802.

Part of the problem in researching this family, for me, has to do with the spelling of the name. In the LDS IGI for example, there are no fewer than 17 different varients of the surname.

Elizabeth married James Ryan in 1817. In 1829 they left Virginia for Ohio. They were parents to thirteen children. When Elizabeth died in 1896 she was the oldest person living in Preble county Ohio. The local newspaper did a lengthy story about her life.

I also have a copy of a book entitled "An Ohio Schoolmistress, The Memoirs of Irene Hardy" Irene is a Ryan cousin and granddaughter of Elizabeth and James Ryan. In this book she recounts memories of Chrismores and Ryans among others. The only Vaughn mentioned is a Dr. Daniel Vaughn from Dublin Ireland. Irene makes no mention of a familial realationship to him. Irene believed that the Chrismores were German which seems plausible, however, CHRISMORE is surely anglisized, and I can find no German equal.

Well, if any of this is useful to you let me know. If I find any info on the Vaughns I will pass it along.

Good Luck,
Anne

This is great - another researcher in my line! The Anthony Chrismore who married Almira Vaughn is the son of John W. Chrismore and Rachel Wright, which would be the same John you mentioned. Are you descended through Elizabeth then?

We should share what we know. I have a few pages of research that were done by one of my father's cousins, Charles Cochran, but since the Chrismores were not directly related, there is not a lot. It's still been helpful, though. Other cousins of that line don't seem to know much, either. I spent time in Winchester, VA, a couple of years ago, so I found a little bit more - the best of which is a photo of Rachel Wright Chrismore! I'll be happy to share what I have.

No luck finding out more about the older Anthony, but I haven't spent much time there - my focus has been trying to find any clues about Almira Vaughn and her family. If you run into anything let me know.

So am I writing to a new cousin? That's amazing!

Hi- I am also researching Chrismores in Frederick County. The Anthony Chrismore I am reseaching was born about 1769, probably in PA. He married Anna or Albedina Cole in PA, he died in about 1832 and is buried in Frederick County. As far as I know they had two children, my ancestor Elizabeth, and a son John. Elizabeth left Virginia in 1829, but I believe that John lived his whole life in Frederick County. I don't know if this is of any help to you, but in reseaching the name I find that it is fairly uncommon and my hunch would be that there is a connection. I have a little info on this family but it is slow going.

Good Luck,
Anne
