Your great-great-grandmother Sarilda Mays, 11 June 1863 - 28 Mar 1938, daughter of James Mays and Margaret Slusher, was my 1C3R. I am a great-great granddaughter of Margaret's sister Mahala Slusher who married Oliver Quesinberry. (This would make you and me fourth cousins.)

It appears from the census records that Sarilda's husband John Milton Crisp, 13 Sep 1863 - 4 Dec 1919, was in prison at the Kentucky State Penitentiary in Frankfort in 1910, and released by 1915, and that while he was in prison he and Sarilda were divorced.

Do you have information about what he was sentenced for, and when? Someone told me that he had shot his mother, but his mother Jennie Click wife of Christopher Columbus Crisp outlived him by about 15 years, so if he shot her, she did not die.

Hi, Alice -- Thanks for the idea. The Sacramento Public Library let me down. They don't do interlibrary loan anymore. I also contacted our local university, of which I'm an alumna, but they'll only do interlibrary loan for a current student or faculty member. However, I sing in a church choir with several young people who are students at said university, so I'll try getting one of them to request the book for me. It may pan out yet.

Isn't Google Books a wonderful site? I've found so much information there that would have been totally invisible to me without digital technology.

My sympathies on the brick wall. I've got one of those, too, in a different branch of the family. Early America was not a good place for record keeping!

Thanks so much for all your help.

Kathleen

Kathleen, your line of Crisp family is very colorful it seems. I was aware of Charles Crisp the Georgia politician with many honors. It might not be too hard to borrow a copy of the dissertation. My dad's thesis for his MA degree was at the SMU library in Dallas. I found it by accident on a Google book search. I was able to borrow the actual manuscript through my local library here in Charleston, SC. I put in a request through my library and SMU sent it to them. I was able to check it out and take it home. You can probably do the same thing.
BTW, don't discount your ability to write.
I hope you find out more about your Crisp family. Mine has been a brick wall for years.
Alice

Hi, Alice,

I agree, it would be interesting to find some contemporary accounts of their performances.

The W.H. Crisps came to the United States in the mid-1840s. They were classical actors. I found a few records of performances in New York and Boston, but, primarily, W.H. Crisp managed theaters and theater companies in Georgia, Tennessee and Louisiana during the 1850s and 1860s. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Apparently, among other things, he taught the troops sword fighting! One of his sons -- Charles Frederick -- was a judge, Congressman from Georgia and Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1880s and 1890s. I think his daughters, Cecilia and Jessie, formed their own repertory company at some point and toured. They're an intersting family.

W.H. and Eliza moved to Texas in about 1870 and died there in 1873 (Eliza, in Waco) and 1874 (W.H., in Dallas). There's a doctoral dissertation on William Crisp at UT Austin, but, I haven't figured out how to borrow a copy yet. (I'm in California and not associated with any academic institution.)

My line comes through W.H.'s sister, Cecilia, who married a doctor in Gloucestershire in the 1830s. Their son married an American girl in London in 1860 and migrated to the U.S. I'd love to know if there was any contact between nephew and uncle after they both reached these shores. I wish I had writiing talent -- what a novel the stories of our ancestors would make!

Thanks again for your help. If you run across anything else, my email address is katekin@sbcglobal.net.

Good luck on the hunt for your Crisps!

Kathleen

Thanks, AlicefromBigD. You have an amazing memory to have recalled seeing that. Everything fits perfectly with what I know of the W.H. Crisp that is Charles Crisp's son -- age, birthplace, occupation, birthplaces and birthdates of his older children. Looks like a match!

I found the Crisp family of actors in the 1870 Dallas, Texas Census. W. H. Crisp is the head of the family and lists himself as a theatrical manager. Eliza (b.1823) seems to be his wife. Next is daughter, Jessie. They were all born in England and are listed as performers. There are several more members of the family (Cecelia, Minnie, Willie)listed as performers and born in various places.

I remember seeing a group of actors surnamed Crisp on a census in Dallas in maybe 1860. I had Crisp family in Texas, but this didn't seem to be my family. I am going on long time memory, but it seems they were staying in a hotel and were from England. I could be all wet, but that's how I remember the info. If you don't find it, let me know. I'll try to find it again.

Crisp family -- actors/theatre managers

Hi,

I'm looking for information about a family of actors/theatre managers who flourished in the west of England in the early decades of the 19th century. There were three brothers: John, Charles and George. Charles was born about 1790, John was older than he, and I don't know where George fit in the birth order.

Charles (my 4 greats grand-father) married Eliza Cooper in 1806 and had several children, at least three of whom followed him onto the stage: Eliza (b. abt 1806), Cecilia (b. abt 1811) and William Henry (b. bet 1817-1822), usually billed as "W.H. Crisp".

If anyone has any information -- or ideas where I might find information -- about this family I'd appreciate hearing about it.

Thanks!

I'm a Crisp, my dad is as well, and we live in Hendersonville, NC. And my dad's sisters and mother live in Weaverville, NC. Both about 20 minutes either direction from Asheville.

We have since found that Thomas and selina Crisp went to New Zealand, this was after 1861. We have located their deaths, in 1907 and 1917. However, we know from letters, that they left their daughter Elizabeth Ann in England. We have located her in the 1871 census, but not after that. From the letters, it would appear that she was certainly in England up to (and most likely after the date) 1907. what happened to her?.
Thank you for your message - apologies, I have been away so did'nt see it earlier. I am trying to find my father who has/had the name of Frank Crisp - I never met him. I was born in 1951. I know there are many Frank Crisps but I am just hoping someone knows something. Many Thanks.

Hi,
I am the grandaughter of the Frank Francis Crisp b1909 who you mentioned in a previous message. Yes, his father was Alfred William Crisp b1878 d1926 and his mother was Annie Matilda Clarke b 1877 d1962. Alfred did have the bakery in Leiston but when his father Edward died he took over his bakery in Saxmundham. When Alfred died, Annie continued the business and in turn my grandfather Frank carried on until they were bought out by Matthes.

I have traced my Crisp line back to Mark Crisp b1780 and have no record of a Leo, so I don't think Frank & Leo can related.

I have also been told that my Crisp are somehow related to the Charles Crisp who died in the Aldeburgh Lifeboat Disaster of Dec 1899 ...but so far I can't prove the link between the two families.

If I can be of anymore help, please ask.

Am interested in a family of English Crisp's (Crispe) beginning with Sir Nicholas who shipped and traded between Africa & the West Indies about 1625 and later, but appears to have kept a home on Bread Street (London?) Other names associated with him was Thomas Crispe, g-grandson and slave trader active between 1649-1665. Several apparent descendants settled in Montserrat, St. Kitts, West Indies. A daughter m. Charles Molyneux also of the Islands, giving rise to a commonly used name Crisp Molyneux.
Any add'l info would be appreciated. Thanks.
