There was probably more than one Crites immigrant, but ships' passenger lists were not routinely kept until about 1725. There were certainly a LOT of Crites with the first names of Abraham, John, Philip...in several different states. There is no way to know exactly how many there were in any particular place.

Thanks for all of the detailed information that you provided. I can't answer everything, but the answer to your question number one is yes, there were other Philip Crites. There was one who served in the War of 1812 in a VA militia regiment, and he was pensioned and also got bounty land (though he sold both of his land warrants). Later, his widow, Ann, was pensioned. Ann had been previously married to Dickerson Thurman, and she says that she didn't have any children with Phillip Crites.

This Phillip stated, in his bounty land declaration in 1850, that he had volunteered at Botetourt Co., VA on 10 July 1813 for 6 months, and was discharged because of sickness on 25 October 1813. He died 27 May 1879 in Hawkins Co., TN. A letter in the pension file from L. H. Rogan of Kingsport, TN, states that "Mr. Critz is a man of intelligence and standing, having been several times a member of our state legislature".

Best wishes in your search.

CRITES, John and Abraham (brothers) and Abraham (father)

At her request, I am looking into the ancestry of my daughter's biological family. We have established a line of descent from John Crites, born about 1775 in Virginia, died about 5 Feb 1847 Jackson, West Virginia, married 28 April 1807 Harrison, West Virginia Glory Pfost (or Post). According to marriage record, John's father was Abraham (mother is unknown). Also it appears that John had a brother Abraham who married Glory's sister Susannah Post (or Pfost) at about the same time. His father was also listed as Abraham. Several trees list an Abraham as a son of Philip Crites (or Kreutz) who emigrated from Germany in 1741, but provide no details, so I don't know if this is the correct Abraham, or if he is in fact a son of the known immigrant. My questions:
1. Was Philip Kreutz/Crites the only person of that name to come to the Virginia/West Virginia area at that time? If not, were there others who were related? Not related?
2. I have seen references to a German speaking Lutheran church that was the religious home to many of these Palatinate German immigrants. Are there records of the Kreutz/Crites family available through this source? If so, how does one see or get copies of these records? (We live in Michigan, several hundreds of miles away, so travel would be an issue)
3. I have also heard that there was a Crites family reference book. Does anyone know where it is available?

Thank you for your help.
Carol Todoroff (mother of Anna Todoroff, born Shirley Boggess)

John Crites B-1818 Ohio

Hi,

I am looking for any information on John Crites from my line. He was born on 19 Sept 1818. I believe it was in Ohio, according to a census record. He married Eliza Dooley in the Stark county area of Ohio on 18 Aug 1842 and then was listed in the census of 1850 as living in Sugar Creek Ohio (with 5 children). In the 1860 census they had moved to Indiana. Aside from his children listed in the census, I can't find any more supporting information on him, his parents, birth place, or siblings.

There seem to be a few John Crites' listed, but none that are born in or around 1818.

Does anyone have any information on this John??

Thanks,
Ken

In Memoriam Charles Bernice Crites

The Evening World, Bloomfield, Indiana
October 27, 1976, page 3, columns 1-6.
In Memoriam
Charles Bernice Crites
Today would have been our Dad’s eighty-first birthday. “Bucky” Baker would have baked him a birthday cake and the group from the Owensburg Baptist Church would have helped him to celebrate, along with all the other residents of the Bloomfield Nursing Center, who have birthdays in the month of October. Each one of his four children and their families would have helped him to have a happy day as best we could, but God in His perfect omniscience changed our plans and on September 8, Dad suffered a heart attack and we took him from the Nursing Center to the Greene County Hospital where at about five in the afternoon of September 14, he went Home where time is not counted by years and no one ever grows old.
If it had been possible for Dad to have chosen to spent this eighty-first birthday with whomever he chose, he’d have selected to have spent it with his wife, who left this earth on January 12, 1975, for they had been married over fifty-six years and no matter how hard we tried we never could fill the loneliness he felt for our Mother.
Charles Bernice Crites, the oldest child of William Armstead Crites and Della Luiza Calvert Crites, was born in Greene County and except for the time her served as a soldier in World War I was never away from Greene County. He was a farmer and often left his fields to assist a neighbor in doctoring a sick animal for he had a real love for veterinary work, which he continued doing until he was no longer physically able to make his calls. This was the reason for his familiar title and for his being remembered by many as “Doc” Crites.
He had also served as Highland Township road superintendent, had worked at Crane Ammunition Depot, and was trustee of the Calvertville General Baptist Church where as a youth he was converted, baptized, and remained a member until his death.
Death separates us but it does not erase so many, many dear memories Bernice will be remembered as a good neighbor. He had a genuine love for people and especially for children. This rewarded him the last months of his life when so many, many neighbors and acquaintances stopped at Room 16 to greet him. The family thanks each one of you.
His sister, Lorene Noel, and brothers, Tilman and Harold, will ever remember their times growing up together, how he played the Big-Brother Role well; how he loved and cared for the teams.
We children will remember Dad as strict disciplinarian who taught us, and practiced before us, to: owe no man a cent, make your word your bond, and vote a straight ticket. Dad loved music and at different times sang in quartets. He often entertained his nieces, nephews and grandchildren by playing the fiddle and French harp. He had a special knack for writing poetry and for impersonating, and each one close to him had been given a nickname all his own. It is not our intent to imply that our Dad was perfect, for we know he wasn’t, but we would write an ode to him as a good dad and to remind all who read this to take advantage of the precious time you have your parents with you, for just two years ago, today, all our family met on Main Street to celebrate a birthday, not once realizing it would be our last family gathering.
Besides the four children, one sister and two brothers, Bernice is survived by his daughter-in-law, Wilda Crites, and his two sons-in-law, Don Sheets and Marion Noel; by eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Rex Reid; a brother, Russell; a grandson, Brad; and his wife, Ona Hunter Crites.
We want to thank all the Special People of the Nursing Center who made his life as easy as possible for the last twenty-one months. How we wish some of you could have known him as he was before his health failed him. A special note of gratitude goes out to dear Charley Thomas who was an understanding neighbor to the resident in Room 16 when he needed him so much; to Wayne Sparks who used patience beyond duty to comply with wishes that were sometimes impossible; to two Phyllises and to two Marys that were especially kind; to Myrtle and Anna who knew him before and understand with a different insight; and to Wanda Johnson, who actually shed tears as she assured him she’d take care of things for him. You are all a rare breed!
Thanks also to each one who sent flowers and cards. We appreciate everything; especially the Calvertville Missionary and the Union Valley Church for the food and coming and helping out.
Harwood, Oneta, Mable and Mary.
(Written by Oneta Crites Noel)

Maybe this is your family?

"Genealogical data contained in the Statuates at Large, Commonwealth, PA Session 1827/1828"

#99 Whereas Henry CRENTZ, late of Lynn Twp., Lehigh Co., died interstate, seized of certain real estate, leaving several children and one grandchild as heirs, three of which children and the grandchild are still in their minority, and a sale of the real estate can now be made to Henry BRAUCHER, which will greatly benefit the minors. So glad to hear from you - my gggrandparents were John Boggs & Nancy Jane (Shelton) Litsinger; Nancy's parents were James & Amanda (Critz) Shelton; Amanda was daughter of Wm.
Do you have any other family names connected to your John Crites? George Crites of Wayne County, Ohio might have had a son John about that age, but I don't have anything else on him. George Crites was born in PA, lived in Ohio, and moved to Indiana. He was going back to Ohio to visit family when he died of a heart attack in Union train station, Indianapolis, Indiana.

I am working on the Crites line that went from Ohio to Indiana to North Dakota. I seem to be stuck at John Crites (1818-1866) up in the northern Ohio area, who married Eliza Dooley. I have been looking off and on, but can't seem to connect John to anyone. I was told by my Grandfather that the family line went from Germany (Dutch-German) to PA to OH. Is my John part of this line??

Thanks - Ken

Thank you for this - I'm descended from the line of 4 Andrew Crites and Mary Harbaugh through his son, George Crites. A lot of my information, though not all, came from family information. I have been hitting snag after snag about his father, Jacob, since most of the on-line lineages haven't made sense when I compare them. Your lineage is the first one that shows me where some of my assumptions were wrong, and helps me correct them. My worst mistake has been my information said Andrew's grandfather was Jacob, not William. Most people were saying that William was the father, but I wasn't accepting that. Now I see how the people fit in the lineage, I am sure your data is correct, and mine wrong. Thank you again for posting this.

I am descended from William White and Iola Belle Crites (could be Zola?). I also have her siblings as Elmer and Charles Crites; and their parents as Joseph Henry Crites and Sophia Elizabeth Boyd.
It looks like the Crites line from Germany to Illinois goes Philip to Jacob to Jacob to Abraham. Abraham Crites, his wife Elizabeth Kurkendall, and their children came to Illinois. Abraham and Elizabeth did have a son Thomas Henry Crites who was born in 1871, but he doesn't quite match up with our Joseph Henry Crites. Have you learned anything new about how we tie in with the older generations? Thank-you

These names I recognize. John was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Kinterner Crites and he married Mary Walters. There is also a Monroe Co, Pa. branch of Crites, but no one can make a connection.

These are excerpts from "The History of Tuscarawas County, Ohio", published by Warner, Beers & Co

(This is another Crites line that also lived in and around Dover, Ohio)
WILLIAM CRITES, farmer, P.O. New Philadelphia, was born in Dover township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1840, and is the son of John and Mary Crites, both natives of Pennsylvania. They were among the early settlers of this county.
The subject of this sketch was married in Dover Township in 1865, to Mary Foney, who was born in this county.

(This is my line, from Jacob, born in Pennsylvania.)
George W. Crites, druggist, Dover, is the great grandson of Jacob Crites, a native of Washington County, Penn., who was among the distinguished pioneers of Tuscarawas County. He died near Dover in the eightieth year of his age. His son, Andrew Crites, was born in Washington County, Penn., and came with the family to this county, where he died in 1838, aged seventy years. George Crites, the father of our subject was born near Dover January 29, 1813, and died February 15, 1879.

I hope this helps clear up some of the problems.
