Hi Pete,
Thanks for your posting. We have confirmed that the birth certificate of my father is actually Crout, which in cursive script I must say looks very much like Croat.
We have some definite leads on Crout around Inverness, which confirms other information gathered, so the probability of us having a Croat connection is low.
Thank you for your posting and good luck with your search.
kind regards
Malcolm Crout

Hi! Sylvia, My husbands grandmother (May Elizabeth Croat 1903 - 1973)is also a Croat from Leeston, Canterbury. She is one of 8 children born to Henry Croat -1879 -1948 & Elizabeth Jane McJarrow 1884 - 1962 , who are both buried in the Ellesmere cemetery at Leeston. I do not have any info at present as to who Henry Croats parents are, or where he was born. Just a long shot. Thought there may be a chance of a link, as I haven't come across many Croats.
my next step is to send for Henry Croat & Elizabeth Jane McJarrows marriage cert. Would love to hear from you.
Regards, Barb.
Hi Sylvia,
Until I was able to hunt down an actual copy of my father's birth certificate, our name has been spelled as CROUT, however the certificate is clearly CROAT. My father came to Australia at the age of 15 and much of his hid father's family is known, although he was a clarinet player in the Yorkshire regiment - I have some badges. My grandfather married Marie Ogilvie and that side of the family is fairly easy to trace and until we discovered this new spelling, we were concentrating on Alsace as being the source of the Crout name. Now I find it to be Croat in the midlands of England. We are totally confused and my Dad died with his knowledge. I would be happy to share what we have established.
Kind Regards
Malcolm Crout

Greetings Angelique from Wales
I am Yvonne Valerie Caul (formally CROAT) I have been in touch with Sylvia and I expect she is now in contact with you, where are you NZ or Ausi?
I am absoloutely delighted to find that I have relatives at last from the Croat side of the family. I have a letter in my hand from 1942, when a Miss Catherine Croat died and left some mones to my grandfather William John CROAT born 1894 in Chepstow and died in Cardiff in 1974 he was a great man whom I adored (Iwas the only grandchild)and also a farm labourer (or as they called it then a 'farm bailiff' - he worked on a beautiful 32 area farm owned by a weathly business man in Cardiff (who also owned many farms in the area, all of which is now built upon).

Now I am getting interested in this ancestry thing I am neglecting my dogs - so must go now and give them supper and put them to bed, raining again today.
Take care
Yvonne

Yvonne@rhiwelli.co.uk

Good morning from Wales
Yes I am 100% certain we have a match - did some more research last night will try to get it put down on an email this weekend - thank goodness for an usual surname - I have traced an Annie Hucklebridge who was mentioned as a beneficary in a will and also John Croat - he would be my great grandfather who (both deceased) and my grandfather William John Croat received £14.18.5 back in 1942 (the monies came from Miss Catherine Croat and her solicitors were once again in Chepstow).
I need to spend some more time trying to put this all together - I am thrilled to bits to have stumbled on your message, I had not visited the ancestry site since 2002.

Bye for now, going to feed my 'Cardigan Welsh Corgi's) do you have any dogs? and where are you in NZ.
Take care
Yvonne
They migrated to New Zealand 1879 on the "Northern Monarch", sadly their two children, Albert and Sarah died on the voyage.
John CROAT's parents were John CROAT senior and Sarah Ann NORRIS.
Emma MOULTON's parents were Ansell or Anselm MOULTON/MOLTON and Charlotte ?

Does any of this help?

Angelique
