Here is what I've got. I dont know where or when Edward Beathem was born. I do know he lived in Pittston and married Margarett Crocker who was from Dresden. They got married on May 14, 1803. I didn't know he had two wives. Here is what i have for children of Edward and Margarett.
Robert Edward Beathem born July 11, 1805
Hanna G. Beathem which is the line I come from was born September 24, 1807
Mary Ann Beathem born August 09, 1809 died shortly after
Mary Ann Beathem born August 24, 1810
Elizabeth Beathem February 12, 1812
Margaret Beathem November 18, 1814
Nancy Beathem March 22, 1817
Lot Beathem April 12, 1820

I have also branched out on some of these lines. If you would like to see all of that please send me your email address.
mine is nls1mt@skow.net.

I have been meaning to go to the Dresden Town office in Maine to see if i can find a marriage certificate which would give me both Edward and Margarets parents.
Please let me know what you have. This is really neat. I share my other information with another friend who lives in maine too. She has been helping me greatly with the Crocker genealogy. We both have yet to get past Edward and Margaret.
Thanks
Nate

Brenda, I, too, am a descendant of J. B. thru J. H. M. Crocker from Tennessee, apparently from his first family. My great-grandmother was Annie Vilas Crocker who married W. E. Fraley(Ark.).J. H. M. was married to Roxana Shull and the Roxie name has been carried down. Minnie was Joseph Henry Middleton's sister. "Pitts" may have been J. B.'s son(1853), Minnie's brother, as was Charlie(1857. J.B. was married to Amanda Morphis from Tennessee. All of this bunch of kids were born in Tennessee, also.

My great-grandfather, J.B., was born about 1826, while his son (my grandfather) Ell Hannah Crocker was born in 1869 in TN and died in 1956 in TX. My family lore says JB had 3 families and my grandfather was one of the 3rd group of children consisting of E.H., Maude, John, George, Frank one w/ nickname of "Pitts". They all came to TX from TN in ??. A 1/2 brother, Charlie Crocker, and a 1/2 sister, Minnie Alma Crocker, also came with them. Another individual, Albert Spain also traveled to TX with them and eventually married Minnie Alma.
There are only 2 children of my grandfather's living. A 90 yr. old and the youngest Crocker of E.H. Molly WilliamsCrocker, an 81 year old. He is the last to have the Crocker name in our family.
This is all I have and it is indeed a brick wall.

I know William Roundtree Crocker was the brother to my Great, Great Grandfather Curtis Crocker, I was told that the Crockers hid out in caves when the Indians were being driven out of North Carolina in about 1839 and that they made their way into Indiana and Illinois to find refuge for their families. William used the name of his deceased brother Curtis when he joined up with the Tories. No one seems to have any information on what happened to Curtis or his mother Piercey. I was told by a lady in Clark county Illinois that church records were burned. The only actual proof I have is Francis Marion Crockers death certificate which says his father was Curtis Crocker and mother Mary Ann Jeffers. William Roundtree Crocker has a full beard I thought Indians did not have facial hair.

Dear pgcrocker,

Supplying a where and when would be helpful.

The post most likely to get positive results is one where the user provides data on those ancestors he/she has information for and then asks specific questions on what kind of data he/she is missing.

Different time periods have different documentation available so unless you give us a time period there is no way to help you with acquiring documentation, and without a location such as the county or city where your ancestors lived it is impossible to determine where to look for any documentation.
Re: Crockers of Iowa (Marcellus M. Crocker)

None of you Crockers seem to have posted about Iowa for a few years. I didn't see any reference to your absolutely amazing realtive from Iowa so I thought I would stick my nose in. Marcellus M. Crocker was born in Johnson County Indiana Feb. 6, 1830. His family moved to southeastern Iowa in 1844. A US Senator and Congressman got him an appointment to West Point but he had to withdraw when his father died back here in Iowa. This info is in the "History of Iowa from the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Twentieth Century /Volume 4 by Benjaminf. Gue.
Your relative went on to be a prominent lawyer and moved to Des Moines. He was an incredible guy who played a decisive role in the Iowa Republican race in 1856 and encouraged a guy named Stone to stick to the Iowa Republican platform for granting universal sufferage to blacks in Iowa. They went on to win as he said they would.

He was also a great civil war General. The amazing thing about all this is that my family makes a big deal out of memorial day and decorate many family graves in many Polk County cememtaries. This year we found a new relative who was buried in Woodland cemetary in Des Moines. We put flowers there and we often decide to plant a Geranium also at some other grave nearby that seems to need attention. This year then we looked around at Woodland and very near we found the grave of Marcellus M Crocker. It has a nice like Bronze plaque on it but seemed like no one visited it. So we chose his stone knowing nothing about him to plant our extra flower. I couldn't believe it then when I was reading a book I love about early Iowa history called Bright Radical Star by Robert R.Dykstra. there is quite a reference to Gen. Marcellus Crocker and the important role he played in encouraging Iowa to move in the direction of finally being one the earliest northern states to grant the vote to Blacks. Unbelievable coincidence that we happened to pick his grave to decorate. I assure we will now honor him every year as we honor our own family members! Sorry for the long post -just thought you Crockers ought to know.

Toby Crocker and George Washington Crocker

I have been searching for a link to the Crocker ancestry for almost twenty (20) years. While conducting research on my Crocker ancestry, I participated in a DNA test. In the results, I have found that I am possibly kin to a Toby Crocker and discovered additional information about his ancestry. His Father was George Washington Crocker and have carried the family back from there through others family trees.

Through research the results show that it is possible that I am related within two generations of the above Crockers. From the information I found online, the other family trees state that Toby Crocker fathered a child around 1829 but do not have any sex or names for this child.

My GG Grandfather born Robert M. Crocker and have not been able to find out where he was born, but from what I can find out, he was born around 1830 and was married to an Elizabeth Alexander in Christian County, Illinois. I have a copy of the Marriage License for this couple

We as a family have came to a brick wall and were unable to trace his ancestry back any further until the results came back from the DNA test. The test did not show the recipients name, but did show that we were kin within two (2) generations.

With researching this person, I found that potentially the closest relative was Toby Crocker. If there is anyone within the Crocker list who has additional information about Toby Crocker and his ancestry, I would appreciate any help that you can provide in this matter.

Please respond to this query to help a long lost relative find their way back into the family tree.....

Crocker of Devonshire - Ontario - Arkansas -BC

My GGrandmother name was Margaret J Crocker 1881-1966, her father was William David Crocker. William came to Canada with his older brother Matthew and Younger sister Mary(Polly)from Devonshire, England in the mid 1800s (I don't have dates). Their parents, who were farmers, had both died in Devonshire and the 3 children (Matthew ?, William 19, Polly 14) decided to try their chances in the new world. The ship they traveled on was wrecked off the coast of Nova Scotia. The three Crockers survived the wreck. Matthew headed for Arkansas, William and Polly went to London, Ontario and settled near there. William married Amelia Sheppard (McIntyre), and they had 12 children (wow). William "died a middle aged man" and Amelia moved with most of her kids to British Columbia. Margaret (my GGrandma) stayed in Ontario and married James Brandon, Their daughter Marion is my grandmother. If anyone has info on the Devonshire Crockers, the Arkansas Crockers or the British Columbia Crockers, please let me know. I have plenty of info on the descendants of Margaret Brandon (Crocker).

Re: Crockers of TN

In regard to my message of 30 Sep 2009 in which I posted what information I had gathered on Sherwood Green Crocker and family.
I was subsequently contacted by a descendent of Sherwood Green Crocker who stated that tradition within his branch of the family is that son James A. Crocker did indeed serve in the Civil War, was captured, held prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio, and returned to Coffee Co., TN in broken health. As a result, I expanded my search and was able to find some records on the Civil War service of James A. Crocker. I have also since identified the wife of James A. Crocker. With this in mind I would offer the following corrections for child #5, James A. Crocker:

5. James A. Crocker, born Abt. 1846 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee; died 06 Jul 1871 in Coffee
Co., Tennessee. He married Mary Frances Carr 31 Oct 1869 in Bedford Co., Tennessee; born
27 Sep 1852 in Bedford Co., Tennessee; died 07 Oct 1909 in Bedford Co., Tennessee.

Notes for James Crocker:
James A. Crocker served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War as a Private in Co. H, 11th Tennessee Cavalry. His older brother, John W. Crocker, was also a member of this unit.
Although the exact date is unknown it is probable that James Crocker enlisted some time in 1863, and it is altogether likely that he was with his unit in East Tennessee when his brother, John, was captured on 2 Nov 1863. The regiment was to remain in East Tennessee until the following spring. It was exceedingly cold that winter and the men were poorly clad. Many of them, being almost barefooted, wrapped their feet and legs with rags to keep them from freezing. Near the end of March, 1864, the 11th Tennessee Cavalry was ordered to Dalton, Georgia.
The regiment participated in Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's retreat to Atlanta during the spring and summer of 1864. After the fall of Atlanta, the 11th Tennessee Cavalry was placed in Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Cavalry Corps. They returned to Tennessee with Forrest when Gen. John Bell Hood made his valiant, but foolhardy effort to re-capture Nashville.
For two weeks the Army of Tennessee encamped outside of Nashville hoping to pull Union Gen. George Thomas out from behind his superior fortifications. On December 15, 1864 Thomas swarmed out. The fighting lasted two days (December 15-16) before the Confederates broke under a furious assault. Gen. Forrest’s cavalry was off investing Murfreesboro (Rutherford County) when the Battle of Nashville took place and did not participate. However, when advised of the disaster at Nashville, Forrest began withdrawing from Murfreesboro with his troopers fighting rearguard action to cover Hood’s retreat.
On 17 Dec 1864, as Forrest’s cavalry was leaving Murfreesboro, Pvt. James A. Crocker was captured by Union soldiers. As a prisoner of war, James Crocker was held at Nashville for a few weeks before being transferred to the Federal prison at Louisville, Kentucky on 4 Jan 1865. He was received in Louisville on 6 Jan 1865 and after a brief stay, he was sent to the prison at Camp Chase, Ohio (Columbus, Ohio) on 9 Jan 1865. On 17 Feb 1865 James A. Crocker was transferred to the prison at Point Lookout, Maryland for exchange. The exact date of his exchange is unknown. Family tradition has it that he returned to Coffee Co., Tennessee although his health had been seriously damaged by the hardships of the war and prison camp.

1870 Census - Dist. 4, Coffee Co., Tennessee. 13-13 James Crocker 24 M Farm Laborer TN, Mary Crocker 18 F keeping house TN.

James Crocker died Coffee Co., Tennessee, July 6, 1871, aged abt. 25 years; left a father, wife, and siblings.
If you are chasing the Sherwood Green Crocker family of Coffee Co., Tennessee perhaps the following will be of some help. If you can add anything, or see anything that needs correction, please let us (board members) know. Norm, If you are still out there maybe you can add something.

Sherwood Green Crocker was born 27 Apr 1817 near Mechanicsville, Rutherford Co., Tennessee, the son of Bailey Crocker and Sarah Tait, and died 24 Apr 1896 in Manchester, Coffee Co., Tennessee. He married Elizabeth “Betsy” Vinson 09 Jan 1838 in Middleton Dist., Rutherford Co., Tennessee. She was born 20 Sep 1821 in Middleton Dist., Rutherford Co., Tennessee, and died 16 Jul 1889 in Moody, McLennan Co., Texas.

Notes for Sherwood Green Crocker:
Family records indicate that he was born 27 Apr 1817 and died 24 Apr 1896 while tombstone indicates birth as 27 Mar 1817 and death as 27 Mar 1817. The family records have been deferred to.

In 1836, Sherwood Green Crocker served as a Private in the Second Seminole War in Capt. John E. Crouch's Company, First Tennessee Mounted Volunteers, also known as the “Franklin Blues.”

About the year 1854 Sherwood Green and family moved from Rutherford Co. to Coffee Co., Tennessee where they settled on a farm near Manchester.

Shortly after the Civil War began, he enlisted as a Private on 23 May 1861 in Co. B, 16th Tennessee Infantry. On 9 Jun 1861 a general election of officers was held and Sherwood G. Crocker was elected 1st Lieutenant for Co. B, shortly thereafter re-designated as Co. E. When he enlisted, Sherwood G. Crocker was just past his 44th birthday. For whatever his reasons he resigned his commission after about eight months of service on 2 Feb 1862 at Pocotaligo, South Carolina and went back home to Coffee Co., Tennessee. On 1 Nov 1862 at Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tennessee he re-enlisted as a Private in Co. G, 17th Tennessee Infantry. He was wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Murfreesboro (Stones River) on 31 Dec 1862. His last military record states that he was present for duty in Jun 1863. He is said to have served until the end of the war, however, his name is not found in the paroles of Appomattox where what was left of his unit formally surrendered.

About the year 1885 Sherwood G. Crocker, along with his wife, left Coffee County and moved to McLennan Co., Texas where their son, Napoleon B. Crocker, had settled some years previously. On 16 Jul 1889 wife Elizabeth (Vinson) Crocker died of cholera in Moody, McLennan Co., Texas. Sherwood brought his wife’s remains back to Coffee Co., Tennessee for interment and remained in Coffee County until his own death some seven years later.

1850 Census - Middleton Dist., Rutherford Co., Tennessee. 107-107 S. William B. Crocker, born Abt. 1841 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee; died 1864 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., Georgia.

Notes for William B. Crocker:
Never married

There is some confusion as to whether this son is William B. Crocker or William C. Crocker or if they were one in the same person.

A William B. Crocker enlisted on 23 May 1861 as a Private in Co. B (later Co. E), 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. This is the same enlistment date and the same unit as Sherwood Green Crocker. William B. Crocker later re-enlisted on 10 Apr 1862 as a 1st Sgt. in Co. I, 4th (McLemore’s) Tennessee Cavalry.

A William C. Crocker was a Private in Co. B, 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment and is reported to have been killed at Dalton, Georgia (1864).

Goodspeed’s 1887 History of Coffee Co., Tennessee indicates that when Co. I, 4th Tennessee Cavalry was organized at Manchester, Tennessee in 1862 William Crocker was elected 2nd Lieutenant.

It is suspected that the above are all the same person. It is probable, but not proven, that William B. Crocker enlisted on 23 May 1861 as a Private in Co. B (later Co. E), 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment along with his father, Sherwood Green Crocker. On 10 Apr 1862 he re-enlisted as a 1st Sgt. in Co. I, 4th (McLemore’s) Tennessee Cavalry and was subsequently elected 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed at Dalton, Georgia in 1864.

More About William B. Crocker:
Military service: Pvt., Co. Crocker, born Abt. 1844 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee; died 23 May 1864 in Fort Delaware, Pea Patch Island, New Castle Co., Delaware.

Notes for John W. Crocker:
Never married. He is also listed as J. M. Crocker on his military service records.

During the Civil War, John W. Crocker first enlisted as a Private in Coffee’s Company, Douglass’s Cavalry Battalion of Tennessee Partisan Rangers probably in late 1862. On 25 Feb 1863 by order of Brig. Gen. Nathan B. Forrest, a consolidation took place in which Douglass’ Battalion joined with Holman’s Battalion and a few other companies to form the 11th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. At that time, John W. Crocker became a member of Co. H, 11th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. Company “H” was composed of about twenty men from Coffee County and about eighty men from Warren County and was commanded by Capt. Chatham Coffee.
In October 1863 the 11th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment was placed in General Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corps where they moved into East Tennessee as part of General James Longstreet's army.
On Sunday, November 1, 1863, the 11th Tennessee Cavalry was with a detachment of Dibrell’s Brigade which was ordered to report to Brig. Gen. John C. Vaughn in Morgantown, Blount County (present Loudon Co.) Tennessee located on the east bank of the Little Tennessee River. Fording and swimming the river, it took the command much of the day to make the crossing. Vaughn then moved the detachment north to the small village of Unitia just south of the Tennessee River.
Federal troops were on the north shore of the river in force. A lively skirmish across the river ensued with few casualties on either side. Unable to force the Federal position, Vaughn’s detachment then retraced its steps, and riding all night, began to re-cross the Little Tennessee at Morgantown on the morning of November 2, 1863. Before the command could cross, however, it was attacked by a force of Federal cavalry.
Several men of Capt. Miller’s Company “C” and Capt. Chatham Coffee’s Company “H” were captured in the attack. Pvt. John W. Crocker was among those unlucky enough to become captives.
Now a prisoner of war, Pvt. Crocker and his captured comrades were first sent to McLean Barracks - Cincinnati, Ohio. On November 11, 1863 they were forwarded to Camp Chase, Franklin Co., Ohio where they were received November 22, 1863. From Camp Chase they were transferred to the prison camp at Fort Delaware, Delaware on February 29, 1864 and were received there on March 4, 1864. Soon after arrival Pvt. John W. Crocker was sent to the prison hospital and was discharged from same on April 9, 1864. He died of chronic bronchitis on 23 May 1864 and was buried in a mass grave at Finn’s Point on the New Jersey shore. Finn’s Point was to become a National cemetery in 1875.

More About John W.
