Re: Death of Mrs. Florence B. Crofford - 14 March 1913

Appears in "The Landmark" 29 March 1913 Grady County, Oklahoma

TRIBUTE TO MRS. FLORENCE B. CROFFORD

Mrs. Crofford died in Tucumcari, New Mexico, March 4, 1913, where she spent several years for her health. Previous to that time she had lived at Ninnekah, Little Rush and lately Chickasha. She was born in Mississippi, her father being a wealthy planter – a descendant of the Huegonots; was a faithful wife and mother and leaves a husband, three sons and one daughter; was well educated, a woman of talent and culture, which she used for the highest good; and untiring church and club worker, a regular contributor to several prominent magazines, and won quite a name writing of Indian affairs. Mrs. Crofford won a prize offered by a New York paper for a short story, the scenes of which were laid at Ninnekah. Two years ago she published a booklet of poems called “Songs of the Southwest.” She was an energetic and ambitious woman. The days were too short and her strength too weak for all that she wished to accomplish. While she dreamed dreams she was not an idle dreamer, but worked to make her dreams a reality. If, as some hold, that we progress from one world to another, we believe that she will reach the seventh Heaven, for her wagon was always hitched to a star. We love to think that her lofty ideals are realized, that her ship is safe in port, and that she is free from the storms and trials of life where, with angels and archangels, she will have an eternity of joy. The annexed verse is from her little poem “Ship of Dreams.”

“And with you close beside
We will drift out with the tide
From that beach where wraiths abide.

We will live the dreams that died,
Live it on the sunlit slopes
Of the land of Phantom Hopes.

Bear us thither, Ship of Dreams.”

Barb - Sorry for the delay (of years) but yes, we are talking about the same great grandparents. Augustus did remarry to Margaret Ann Elizabeth Beauchamp. That is all the information that I have besides her 3 children's names all of which were Beauchamps.

The death notice for Augustus does list a Matilda Zumbrum, who was apparently from his first marriage.

Hopefully by now you have found my website and have figured this out.

Katherine Crofford

Gordon Crofford

Hi everyone

I am trying to find descendants of Gordon Crofford, b. Dec. 1910, d. Nov. 1971, probably in Kansas City, MO.

Gordon and wife, Agnes, are listed in the KC city directory in 1950 and 1960.

In 1969, Gordon and Creg [sp?] Crofford, but no Agnes.

In 1970, only Creg is listed. After 1970 neither Gordon nor Creg is in KC.

I have been unable so far to determine the exact date of death for Gordon. I have looked through the KC Star and KC Times for Nov. 1 through Nov. 15 and found no obit or death notice. The Mid-Continent Library in KC checked the dates Nov. 14--17 and found nothing.

If anyone out there knows about Gordon Crofford, I'd love to hear from you.

Many thanks

Bob Beckett
Fountain Valley CA

Crofford Family in Nebraska

Message to Barb Howell. Augustus Crofford is my grandfather, Kenneth Crofford's, great-grandfather. Augustus Crofford died in 1912 and is buried in the Prairie Union Cemetery north of Falls City, Nebraska. Augustus was married twice. His children were William Crofford, my grandfather's father, Roy Crofford (possibly spelled incorrectly as Crawford as he was a career soldier and his name was misspelled on his military records), Tom Crofford, Lee Crofford, Elizabeth Crofford,, Matilda Crofford Zimmerman and another daughter first name unknown, who married a Mayfield. He also had another daughter, Amanda Crofford Martin (apparently from his second marriage). My grandfather, Kenneth Crofford, is interested in whose daughter you are and where you live. If you wish, please reply.

His brother George was appointed his guardian. We know very little about his family. He had two brothers and two sisters I think.
I honestly don't know. The families were large in those days so there could be a large spread between children. This Chester or Charles was born circa 1818 in Virginia. Other sources say TN. I suspect VA is more likely.

Croffords of Alabama

My great grandmother Lucy Ellen Crofford's family originally came from around Birmingham Alabama. We know nothing about her family. Some of the family spelled their surname Crofford and some Crawford. At one time there was talk of an inheritance from Alabama which did not materialize because of this descrepancy. What little family she had in MO. where she married my g grandfather, Dosey James Spradling, used both spellings. The names are William E. and Hicks Crawford, and Amos Crofford. If would love to find the family.

Lucy Ellen Crofford was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She had brothers named Amos and Hicks. We have NO information about her family other than what postdates her. She was the second wife of Dosey Spradling. They had several children, but only my grandmother Rosa Ellen and brothers Tom and Dines lived to maturity. There had other half siblings by their father. Any help. It is also likely they had relations in Arkansas. This has always been a mystery. Lucy Ellen died when my grandmother was 13 and her brothers barely school age.

AL - Crofford to TX - Crawford

I am searching for information on my ggrandfather. He has been known to me by SEVERAL names. They range from John to Rutherford Walker to Railsford. Needless to say it didn't help when I learned that he may have been the one to change the last name spelling to Crawford from Crofford. This line stumps me. He came from Alabama prior to 1917 and that is about all I know. Speculation says he changed name due to criminal brother by name of Miles Crofford and wanted to detach himself from that. Prior family members have tried to visit the old family homestead in Alabama, after WWII but were advised to leave. There again speculation of a falling out due to family squirmish over brothers and sisters being 'taken' to Texas is the idea behind this. Please help me if any of these stories sound familiar to you. I may never get to the root of my Crawford/Crofford roots.
Thanks
