Augustus Sr. was born about 1820 in Baden, Germany. In 1845 he and his wife Elizabeth and their son, Augustus Jr., age 2, fled to America, settling in western Pennsylvania. Augustus Jr. enlisted on May 2, 1864 in the Ohio Volunteers, Company D-155th regiment, at Youngstown for 100 days. He served under Captain Westler and fought in the Wilderness Campaign which included the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse and the Battle of Cold Harbor in command of General Ulysses S. Grant. He was mustered out (dropped an ammo box on his toe) on the 27th of August, 1864, at Camp Gunnison, Ohio and received a military pension for his services. He moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa and there met and married Louisa Jane Dickey (I have a copy of their marriage certificate - 3/13/71). She was the daughter of Joseph and Jane Dickey. Louisa was born on 12.10/51 in Indiana. Maybe her father was from Ireland. Haven't been able to find that out. They lived in Iowa for 18 yearswith their five children and moved to Nebraska in 1882 where they lived for a short while. In 1889 the Crofts moved to Oregon and settled three miles west of Corvallis in Benton County where they had a farm. Augustus Croft died in Newport, Oregon at the age of 55 and is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Corvallis. My mom and I have gone there to find his grave and it is unmarked. I would like to find it some day and put up a marker for him.
I have the copies of the Civil War records. Can I help you with anything else? How are we related?
