Hi John,

I know it's been a while since your post but I 've only just seen it.

My mother's Grandmother was Mary Farrell. Her parents were Patrick Farrell and Mary Croke married in Shandrum in 1869.All their children were born there. My mother was always told that Mary Croke was a grandniece of Archbishop Croke.I've only just started researching this family and I've see there is a lot of interest in connecting to the Famous Archbishop.I know that there were five of the family joined the clergy Thomas,James,Isabella and two other sisters(names unknown). His uncle Thomas was parish priest in Charleville for over 40 years which is where my mother's family are still.I believe Mary Croke's father was William but not sure.As you can a lot of names and dates are still to be found so if you have any connection with this I'd appreciate any info you might have...Ray

Hi John,

I saw your info on Ancestry, which was dated 2001. My wife Lucy is the daughter of Winifred Croke, whose father was James Francis Croke. Her mother was Henrietta Fletcher. If you are the grandson of Harold Croke, do you have any info on your g-father's family? Here is what I have found out so far:

James Francis Croke, b: 26 Jul 1881 in Tipperary; wift was Henrietta Fletcher, b: 21 Jul 1882 in Huffersfield, England.
Children were:

Winifred Emily Croke b: 30 Jul 1904 in Plymouth, England
Maurice Croke (Lived in Luton)
Patrick Croke
Sidney Croke
Harold Croke
Burt Croke
Nora Croke (Married Wally Butler)

Hope your Harold is the same as mine. If so, let me know.
It is really hard to do research of England/Ireland when you live in the USA.

Thanks,

Pat Henry (York, Pa, USA)

John and Sarah were my grandparents. While I have been very successful with the Nugent line, the Croke line is very difficult.

A few tree's have my grandmother listed as "Sadie", which was her nickname. I would love love to chat with anybody that has info on my Croke/Newfoundland family.

I would be glad to provide you with my gedcom if it will help.

Les - ral_partha@yahoo.com

I am stuck and looking for help. My grandmother was Alice Croke married to Edmund Holton. Her siblings were George, Ruth (died in 1929), Rowena and Thomas. Her parents were Stella (no idea of maiden name) and Dennis who at least for a time was a policeman in Milwaukee. Stella and Dennis are buried at St. Mary's Cemetary, W. Acretown Ave. Hales Corner. Also buried in the cemetary is Ruth. She is buried at a plot with William and Delia and Francis (daughter of William and Delia. I am thinking William and Dennis were brothers, for a number of years they lived in the same house but I have no factual evidence. They disappear at 1900.

I have acquired information relating to the Croke family. This information is specific to any Croke family members whose ancestors originated in Co.Cork. Donna McAuliffe has an ancestor called James Croke who also appears in my research.

Archbishop Thomas William Croke, born Castlecor, Co. Cork, Ireland was Bishop of Auckland, New Zealand 1870-1876, and Archbishop of Cashel, Ireland, 1876-1902. He was the patron of the Gaelic Athletic Association and Croke Park, Dublin was named for him. The only collateral descendents are apparently the offspring of his younger brother David, of Victoria, Australia (Archbishop Croke's uncle James Croke was Solicitor-General of Victoria). There is much more detail in a biography of Archbishop Croke, "Croke of Cashel: The life of Archbishop Thomas William Croke, 1823-1902", by Mark Tierney, published by Gill & Macmillan, Dublin, 1976.

He was a distant cousin of my Mother. She was born in Jersey City, N.J. in 1903. Her Father was John Croke and her Mother was Anne Hylens. I wonder if your Crokes could be related to us in any way.

This has to be a different Archbishop Croke because I have a book about Archbishop Croke's life and I also looked him up in the Catholice encyclopedia and he is considered a Doctor of the Roman Catholic church and my Mother who is deceased now also knew about. I have never seen anywhere that he was married or excommunicated.

There is also something about Croke Park being leased to the Irish Government on a hundred year lease? i do hope this is of help.

This appears to be a connection. Mary Ann Croke was my great aunt. She married a John Toohey in 1888 in London Ontario. My grandfather was her youngest brother, Maurice, born in 1853. He was born in London Ontario. And a year later his father, John Croke was killed in an accident here in London, Ontario. There appears to be several other children I simply cannot account for and they may have been born in the US. They are listed in the 1851 Canada Census. Its been a long time since I checked the message board.

The John Croke that was my great-grandfather died in 1854 in an accident in London Ontario. He is supposed to have fallen off a roof he was working on. I can account for only three of his offspring, none of whom were named Marie. (There was a daughter Mary Ann who married a John Toohey but had no issue.) There may have been more children because I can find listed in the 1851 census a John Croke with wife Johanna and several children who were born in Ireland, Quebec and USA. My grandfather, Maurice, was born in 1853 in London Ontario and was the youngest, obviously. The oldest child was Michael, born in Ireland and may have fought in the US Civil War. He does not appear in the 1871 census.
If any of this fits, let me know. I have been on holiday and am jusst now trying to get back into genealolgy.

Sorry I confused you. John and Johanna Croke were my great grandparents. They were both born in Ireland sometime in the early 1800's and they ended their days in London Ontario. Both are buried here. They had either three or six or seven children. I can only account for three - my grandfather, Maurice (born 1853)the youngest of the family who lived and died in London, Ont. and Mary Ann, my great aunt who was born in Quebec but died here in London, and there was a Michael. But I also found in the 1851 census William born sometime in the 1840"s and died in London 1860, Edward born about 1849, and Eliza born about 1850. At least 2 of the last three were born in the USA - can't remember which. Those three along with Michael disappeared off my radar screen, although the family story about Michael was that he fought in the US Civil War. He was born in 1841 in Ireland.
Hope this clarifies my former message. (As you can guess there are still Crokes in London, Ontario.) Since I have been away from the genealogy for awhile my memory is not fresh. I would love to her if there is a connection.

Further to my earlier message of today 09/06/01- I checked the 1851 census and at that date William born in the U.S. was 3, Edward born in the U.S. was 2 and Elisha (not Eliza) born in Ontario was 1. My grandfather, Maurice, was born in 1853 and his father, John, was killed in August of 1854. I am making a guess now that William, Edward, and Elisha were sent to relatives or adopted by someone or whatever. Because Johanna would have been very poor. She at one point listed her occupation as that of a laundress. However, it appears that William did die in London in 1860. Let me know if any of this fits with your information.

Her obit said she was born in Newport (Tip I think) and that her father's name was John - an earlier John than yours. Their children were James,MaryAnn,Anna,Johanna,William,John and Thomas. I'd say the names are family names - Pretty suspicious! Email me. Jill

I just happened to see your posting, but seldom go to these message boards. I feel pretty certain that the Croke family you are referencing was that of my grgr-grandmother. I have access to some Canadian records and will search the area of London, Ontario. My grgr-grandmother was listed in her obit as Maria and her fathers name was John Croke. She met her first husband Thomas Laffan who owned and operated a grist mill in Canada - he came from Ireland and was up to 10 years older than she-he died in 1858 in WI She then married a Patrick Ryan. Hope to hear from you. Jill

Thank you Carolyn for the clarification.I can see that it would be unlikely that my grgr- grandmother Maria(Mariah)who was born at the latest in 1830 would fit this family.I do find it interest in the fact that so many of the names are the same as in her family. There were:John, Johanna, MaryAnn, William and Eliza. I wonder in looking at the dates, and noting that many were born in the same time period as were hers, could it be that John and Maria were siblings? If I ever untangle this, I will let you know! Thanks again, JILL

My grandfather was Thomas Croke, born 1905 in Callan, brother of Mary, Patrick, Johnny, Edward, Bridget and Michael. Their father was John Croke, farmer, born 1874, married to Ellen (nee O'Shea, or Shea). John's father was Patrick, farmer, and Ellen's father was Patrick O'Shea or Shea. All from Callan. Brendon from Callan, it seems you are my mum's cousin's son.
