JAMES CROWLEY
James Crowley/Croley was the second child and oldest son of Samuel and Elizabeth Strong CROWLEY. He was born 20 May 1764 in Pittsylvania County, VA. Like his father, he served in the American Revolution. He married, in Henry County, VA (1786) to Mary McClain, daughter of Thomas McClain. James CROWLEY died around 1844 in Clay County, MO. His father was Samuel Crowley/Croley who died 10 Oct 1774 at the Point Pleasant Battle and his mother was Elizabeth Strong, daughter of William Strong of Halifax County, VA. Children of James and Mary:
1. Samuel Croley born 14 Nov 1786 in Henry County, VA. He died 1 Jul 1849 of cholera in Clay County, MO. He married (1) Celia Mayo on 15 June 1826, (2) Nancy Lowe
2. John, called Jack, Crolwey born 2 Feb 1792 in Henry County VA. and he died 29 Sept 1877 in Clay County, MO. He married (1) Sarah Mayo, (2) Emaline Nelson. 3. Isham CROWLEY born 17 Apr 1795 or 1796 in Henry County, died 30 May 1878 in Tarrant County, TX He married Elizabeth Medlin, daughter of Captain Richard Medlin in Powell 4. Hiram CROWLEY, born 1801 in Henry County, VA. Married (1) Matilda Stevens in Ray County, MO, (2) Mary E. Munkres.
5. Nancy CROWLEY born 12 May 1800 in Henry County, died 24 April 1873. She married John Wilson on 25 Dec 1823.
6. Hulda CROWLEY born 1803 in Henry County, VA. Married Jack Allen on 20 Dec 1820 in Howard County, MO. She and her husband lived near Allen's Mill in Ray County and she died a few days prior to 16 Aug 1889.
7. Elizabeth CROWLEY born 1789 married Travis Finley
8. Thomas CROWLEY born 2 Feb 1792. a twin of John. The historian S.G.Laffoon of Missouri gives the birth date of John to be 4 Feb 1791 in Georgia and his death to be 29 Sep 1877 in Clay County. He also gives a Georgia birth place for Isham and holds that it occurred in 1796. Nancy's birth took place in Campbell County, TN on 12 May 1800 according to Laffoon. Campbell County is given by Laffoon as the site of the birth of Hiram and the date to be later than the one shown above. Laffoon also shows Hiram's wife to be Matilda Stephenson and their wedding to be 16 June 1842.
