I am a descendent of Jerry Crumidy/Cromartie of Lee County Florida. He had a twin sister named Hattie. I am not sure of any additional siblings. Jerry had three daughters, Ruby, Hattie and a third. Hattie (my grandmother) stayed in Florida. One daughter moved to Texas and another moved to Alabama. I have only heard roumors of Native American ancestry; I am unable to verify them. Please contact me if any of these names or this story sounds familiar.

Hi Kim

I was born Jomika Cromartie in Boston Mass. I have recently met with my maternal grandmother who told me that our family originated from Florida and that my great great grandmother Rosa Cromartie moved her grandchildren to Boston leaving my great grandmother in Florida in the 60's.
Both my great/ and my great great grandmother were American Indian. If you know any information that may be helpful to me locating other family members I would greatly appreciate it.

I had an old friend in the Los Angeles area named Ramona Cromartie (c. 1975-1990). I believe her family hailed from Winston-Salem NC, but her mother and dad moved to Brooklyn NY and raised the family there. Ramona's mother and daughter were also named "Ramona." Several years ago, after the mother died, Ramona and her daughter moved back to the Winston-Salem area. From that point, I have lost touch with her. She spoke of aunts coming to Sunday picnics and drinking bourbon from a mason jar. Ramona was a major jazz buff and had extensive knowledge of musicians from the 1950s and 1960s who played in NY and from the 1970s in Los Angeles, late night sets at the Parisian Room. My understanding was that black musicians who played NY regularly bunked at the Cromartie home in Brooklyn.

Lisa, wish I could help. My sister lived near there but not until 1993 and later. I lived there too but I had no children at the time. I met a cousin through these post. So, don't give up. :-)

I don't have anything meaningful to contribute, but I am also looking for African American Cromarties. My husband was given up for adoption in 1982 out of San Angelo, TX and the only info that he has is that his birth mom's name was Cromartie.

I am not sure where Jerry was born but he had a sister named Hattie who I believe was his twin and another brother whose name I don't know. My grandmother had two sisters, Ruby Crumidy Braxton and Bernice Crumidy Haddock. I would love to know if these names are familiar to anyone. My grandmother grew up in Ft. Myers, Florida. You have mentioned two Cromartie names that are in my family-Ralph and Irene who are my grandmother's older siblings. Unfortunately, these two have passed on. Most of the siblings ended coming up North (NY and MD). Although, my great-aunt (Viola??) stayed in Wilmington and I think a few of your children as well. Sorry I could not be of help. Happy Hunting to you as well.

Hello - Would one of the siblings be named Irene? I have been looking for Cromarty/Cromartie/Crumity/Cromity/Cromitie descendants as well.

My great-great grandparents were Owen and Armelia Cromartie. They had John, James, Paul, Ward and Arrenner aka Grandma Irene (my great grandmother). Family lore is that Owen had a brother that came to NC with him to work on the railroad from FL via Trinada & Tobago. They had a falling out over something and went their separate ways.

I haven't found my ggrandmom in the census. When I found an Irene in 1930, I checked the telephone book and was surprised to find her brother's name in there! I called and it was the actual brother! His sister was still alive! I gave Miss Irene a call but she was unavailable. Her daughter tried to answer my questions. It wasn't my Irene but I was curious who she may have been named after. Not sure.

Anyway, I am curious if you know if Ralph had any sibilings and their names.

Happy hunting!

Hello,
My name is Kim and I am looking for relatives and history of my maternal grandmother. She is a Cromartie. She was born in Wilmington, NC but her father (Ralph) and older siblings and possibly her mother (Elizaberth) were born in Bladen or Bladenburg County or Council, NC. My grandmother and 2 other siblings of 12 (7 boys and 5 girls) children are the only older Cromarties from this union left. I am getting alot of information from my grandmother (Elosie), but I would like any other information. My grandmother also told me that her father had a brother who migrated to Florida. According to my grandmother, Cromarties was a common name, especially in the country. We have Cromartie family members buried near or with white Cromarties. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Peace!

Ernest: I am trying to get my mother into the Mayflower Society and Colonial Dames. I saw your line in the Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims. Mine is the same down to William Cromartie, then Alexander, Elizabeth Ann Cromartie, wife of Duncan Sellers (Butler Co., AL), Eliza Sellers, wife of Samuel Peaden (Santa Rosa Co., FL), Alice Mary Peaden, wife of Daniel Gordon, Margaret Gordon, wife of G. W. Payne, John Q. Payne, and my mother, Doy Payne Longest.
I would dearly love to know where you got your proofs regarding the Cromartie-Doane line. I think I am solid from that point down.
I am from Starkville, went to Millsaps, have lived in New Orleans for almost 40 years.

Thomas Cromartie 1768 NC

Chowan County, NC rootsweb has marriage bond listed for a Thomas Cromartie in 1768. He married Sarah Doud. Then in 1778, Sarah (?Doud?) Cromartie married Alexander Montgomery in Chowan County. At those times there was a William Cromartie in Bladen County, NC. I am descended from that Wm., the Orkney Emigrant. I've never heard the name Thomas Cromartie of that era in US. Anyone have any clues?

Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane have been gathering annually for a reunion since 1929 in Bladen County, NC. Originally reunions were held at White Lake. Since around 1980 reunions have been held at South River Presbyterian Church on NC Hwy 210 about a mile east of US Hwy 701. The next reunion, 79th will be held Sunday, October 12, 2008.

My maternal grand parents, Angus Cromartie and Anna Isabella "Annie Belle/Annabelle" Black are buried at SRPC cemetery. Granny's spinster sister was Elizabeth Janet Black whose genealogy research data was compiled in the booklet titled The William Cromartie Family, first published in late 1930's. Aunt Bessie is buried at Black River Presbyterian Church in Ivanhoe, Sampson County, NC.

Jasper Parham
Charlotte, NC

Hi,

I just saw your request for information about the Cromarties of Bladen Co. I am a decendent of James William Cromartie. His son, Addison Alexander was my great, great, great grandfather. He had two sons, Raymond and Avon, Avon was my grandfather. I know that they owned alot of land in the Bladen Co. area as well as New Hanover, Pender Co.
They owned slaves and my grandfather grew up in Cypress Creek N.C. I am presently searching for more information, I have just begun this quest so I don't have alot of the history. I am white so I don't know much of the history of the plantation and slaves. I know that the slaves often took the name of their masters, that is why I am wondering if this is the family you are searching for?

If this is of any help to you or if you have any information that may help me please let me know and I will do the same for you.

Sincerely,
Debbie West

Kim,

I did a search on Ancestry.com and found a lot of info on my family. Well, it's not enough for me but if we are talking about the same family, this may help. My great grandfather (Marcellus Cromartie) lived in Bladen, Lisbon, Sampson, NC. He was married to Nettie J. and had several children. I'm not sure of the total number. There was Roland (my grandfather), James, Liller, Edgar, Mary, Eula, and Nettie. There may be more but this is all I could find so far. I just started my search. By they way, Roland is listed as Mulatto. That may explain the burial near whites. I don't know, it's all new to me.

I am searching for any information on my Black great-grandmother Irrinier (pronounced Irene)Cromartie. Her husband was Sir Walter Raliegh Glasper (Gelaspy, Glaspie). I believe her father was Owen Cromartie from the West Indies and her mother was Amelia. Irrinier and Sir Walter had Walter James (my grandfather), Robert, Hattie Mae, Shade, Roscoe, Clara Lee, Niomi, Lena, Edward, and David (aka Shoe).

My am not sure when she was born but my grandfather was born in 1910. I have had her first name as "Arrirrner" "Crumedy" "Crumpity" "Carmody" and on my grandfather's Social Security Application as "Joseph Ineraer Crumington". (My grandfather couldn't write so someone else filled out the form.)

Sir Walter's parents were Sara (don't know last name) and Richard Farrior (but the older family tree has his father as Jesse Glasper). I am sure they were from the Duplin and Bladen County areas.

Any information is appreciated.

I am interested in any information you have on the slaves James Cromartie may have mentioned in his will or through documents that your family has in its possession. I am researching my Black Cromartie relatives also from Bladen County. Owen and Armellia in particular. I recently learned they had John, James Henry, Paul,Ward and Irrener (my great grandmother). Irrener married Walter Gillespie/Glaspie of Duplin County near Cypress Creek.

Oh, I thought I should point out that through my research I have found that my ancestors did not keep the slave owners name for long. Soon after emancipation they changed their surnames. Figuring out the pattern of choosing a new name has been a challenge! Any help is appreciated.

I have African American Cromartie/Cromarty relatives in eastern NC also. I have traced back to Owen Cromartie and Armellia Bonnie/Boney. These are my great-great grandparents. They had five children that we know of: John, Paul, James, Ward (I have seen Evander also) and Irrenner (Irene). Irene is my great grandmother. I am just starting to research the collateral families of her brothers. I have connected with some of their descendents and we are sharing notes! If you have any information you wish to share please post it here or email me directly at kimztree@hotmail.com. We may be able to help each other.

My stepmother also said she has Cromarties in her family that live in E-town. I told her we just may be cousins! I believe her maiden name is Randall but she is now Willie Mae Fant.

Just back from a long trip...will contact you again if that's okay once I figure what time zone I'm in.
Cary

Jessie,
I talked with your mother last year. I would love to hear from you. I live in Lufkin, Texas and have been doing research for years. I am currently working on updating information on the Cromartie Family.
