John Cronan, farmer, age 60, is included on the passenger list of the ship Espindola, which arrived in New Orleans on 25 December 1843. These names are listed as his family:
Laurence, age 19; George, age 17 (George is the ancestor of my husband); Mary Ann, age 15; and Catherine, age 12.
Immediately following these names, the name of Jane Cronan, age 36, is given with the note that she is "going to her husband". Her family is listed as: John, age 7; Maria, age 3; Dennis-- (no years are listed for Dennis but "10" is given in a separate column as if to indicate he is 10 months old.)I'm wondering if his father whom Jane was going to meet, would be Dennis, Sr? Right after Jane's family is listed Bridget Cronan, widow, age 60.
I have death notices from The Times-Picayune (New Orleans newspaper)for some of my husband's ancestors, indicating they were from County Roscommon, Ireland. I am continuing my New Orleans research and would be happy to share/compare notes. Thanks! thercron@uark.edu

Thanks for the reply! Thomas Cronan (born 26 Feb 1852) is my husband's great great grandfather. He descends through Raphael Joseph Cronan(born 12 Nov 1894), then Thomas Joseph Cronan (born 30 Nov 1921). His mother is Vicki Cronan (still living).

You said Francis J. Cronan (Sr.) was your grandfather, so your dad was one of his sons. Sorry to hear he passed last year. How many children did your grandfather have? You didn't mention your fathers name.

I've been adding my info to wikitree. Check it out if you like, http://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/Cronan-Family-Tree-1.

I appreciated the story about the Saturday Night pinochle games!
Thomas J. Cronan was my great-grandfather. He was born on Feb 26, 1852 in Philadephia and married Anne E. Spulher (who was born on June 29, 1851 in Berks Co) on Dec 25, 1873 in Reading, PA. Their first child, Francis J. Cronan (Sr.) was my grandfather. Thomas and Anne's 12th child was my great uncle Raphael J. Cronan who married Emily Hartenstien in 1919. My dad (who passed away last year) had fond childhood memories of Saturday night pinochle games played by his dad Francis with Francis' brothers, including Raphael, and the loud arguments and table pounding that would ensue, to be repeated the following Saturday. (This was at my grandparents' house in Reading, PA.)

Still looking. Who were the parents of Sophronia Elizabeth Taylor (b 1833 KY) and Sarah Thomas Taylor (b 1835 KY)? Sophronia is described as sister to Sarah in a 1944 letter written by one of Sarah's daughters. Sophronia married James Cronan in Obion in 1855. She is listed on the 1900 Lake Co TN census. Sarah married Jesse J Bradley abt 1852 (?where?). They resided in Dunklin Co MO in 1860, went from there to Texas and by 1870 were in Osage Twp, Benton Co AR. Sarah died in 1895 in Washington Co AR. Where were Sarah and Sophronia in 1850? Thanks for any help.
To Mallory Smith:
My daughter Mallory stumble across this post. You are speaking directly of my relatives (grandfather, aunts and uncles). I wanted to confirm with you that my grandfather was Joseph David Cronan. He was married to Edna Mallory. There children were William (my father), Margaret, Katherine, John and Donald. All are deceased the most recent, Margaret who past away at 94 three years ago. She related alot of information to us that confirms the information you have mentioned here. She believed the family hailed from ireland originally, came into canada thru Toronto and migrated to the midwest of the USA. My Grandfather was born in Fullerton NE as was his brother who you mention. They eventually ended up in Oregon in Heppner...my father was born nearby in Heppner. I am one of 6 siblings...there is an extensive Cronan family here in California. I can give you more details if interested...other lineages from the cronan line mentioned here are: Ashla - Steve and Sandra, Bonnie Moton, Celia Miller (my sister), Mary Spallino (my sister), Joseph Mallory Cronan (brother), John David Cronan(brother), James Michael Cronan (brother) and me William Edward Cronan -- all childre of William Joseph and Mary Agnes (foley) Cronan. let me know...

Re: Michael and Bridget Cronan, New Orleans and Amite City

Most Cronin/Cronins are from County Cork or County Kerry, Ireland. I am descended from a small group of Cronins/Cronans from County Roscommon, Ireland. My Great Grandmother was Anne Cronin (1876-1917), daughter of Laurence Cronan (1839-1896) and Granddaughter of Denis Cronan (1791-1873), all of County Roscommon Ireland. I believe that a group of Cronans from County Roscommon settled in New Orleans between the late 1830's and the 1850's. Common first names were John, Laurence and Denis. It seems possible that the Michael and Bridget Cronan you refer to were part of this family group.

Sa

Looking for information on the following Cronans:
John, b. ca. 1830 in Ireland. 1860 census in Groveland, Livingston Co., New York. Wife Ellen, 2 years younger. They had the following children, all born in New York –
Johanna, b. ca. 1860
Ellen, b. ca. 1862
John, b. ca. 1863
Patrick, b. ca. 1865
By 1870 Ellen had died, and John remarried to Mary Mahar, widow of Edward Kelly. Together they had one more child, Cornelius, b. ca. 1867. He is probably the same Cornelius Cronan who later became a Catholic priest.
John died between August 1874 and January 1875.
Would appreciate any information on the later lives of these Cronans.
Hey!

None of those names really sound that familiar, although I think Allan Cronan does? My Paternal GrMom was Pauline Hester Cronan and my Grdad was John Veston Cronan I don't know there exact dates of birth possibly early 1900's like 1901 - 1907? They had 10 children one of which is my dad John Frank Cronan age 66. Some of his siblings are Lamar, Shirley, Bonnell ,James, Jeanny , Brenda,Willard the rest somewhat evade my memory at the moment. They have lived and or till live in Snellville, Dawsonville, Alpharetta and Canton/Cumming areas. I'm not sure if this helps any but if it does or you can direct me another way to do my searching that wouldbe great! Thanks!

We just might have common roots. My great-grandfather is Allen Cronan. He had a son named Allen Ray Cronon, b. 1911. I have records that he had three wives, but only can find info on one - Bonnie Childers. They married in 1948. She was born in 1919...that would have made her 29 or so. I've got 5 children: Juanita, Arthur, Vickie, Mary, and Bertha. He worked as a sawmiller in Ball Ground, GA. He lived in Sylvester GA in 1954, and in Jasper between 1967 and 1985. He died in 1986, and is buried in Jerusalem Cemetary in Pickens Co.

Anything here ring a bell?

The only name I have is my grandfather, Allan or Allen Cronan, my dad, James Robert Lee Cronan and my uncle Ollie Eugene Cronan.

My grandmother (Allen's wife) was only 13 when she married him. Her maiden name was D'Etta Jones.

Hannah Cronin

My great grandmother's name was Hannah Cronin. She married John Hickey, and I believe they both came from Ireland. My grandmother, Kathryn Hickey, was born in 1899, and had brothers Francis and Leonard, all who lived in Glens Falls, NY (north of Albany).
I don't know if this is the same Hannah Cronin, but if you think so, let me know. I think that Hannah might have had a sister that married someone named Moriarty. My father talked about the Moriarty cousins from the Cronin line.
Thanks.
Cathy Vecchio
