Re: Missing 3 Cronin Brothers

My Great Grandfather was John Bernard Cronin, i've included my notes:
John Bernard Cronin was born in Castletownroche, in County Cork, Ireland on 22 June 1842. When he was 9 years old his family immigrated to America they settled in Washington in the District of Columbia. Here his father, John Bernard, worked as a stone-cutter and worked on the building of the Treasury Building. After growing up in Wash. D.C. John made his way to California, possibly with his brother Berney and other family members. There he built his business as a boot-maker, specializing in the making of high-class boots for the cowboys. Later in his business he made boots for the miners. In circa 1864 he married Margaret Mary Casey in San Francisco, California. They moved quite a few times in their married life-some places were Allison Ranch, California, Virginia City, Carson City, and Austin Nevada. Then they moved to Utah in 1887 settling in Eureka and were there until their deaths. They had seven children-Annie died when she was 10 years old, his obituary is as followed.

DEATH OF JOHN B. CRONIN Eureka, April 10--Word has been received here this evening that John B. Cronin, one of Eureka's well known pioneers, died at the Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake, between 8 and 9 o'clock of gangrene.
Some time ago Mr. Cronin received a slight injury to his foot, which was considered trivial at the time, but it became gradually worse, and he was sent to the hospital. Deceased was 65 years of age. He was born in Ireland and came to America at the age of 9 years. He settled with his parents in Washington D. C. where he grew up to manhood, and in the year 1863 went to California, and from there to Nevada in 1865. In 1887 he came to Eureka, and had resided here ever since, being engaged in the boot and shoe business.
He leaves a wife and three sons and three daughters--Daniel B. Cronin, M.F. Cronin, John Cronin, Mrs. Patrick Shea, Clara and Kate Cronin. His remains will be prepared at O'Donnell's Undertaking parlors and shipped to Eureka for interment. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed. The Eureka Reporter.
John died in the year 1907 and he is buried in the Eureka City Cemetery.
John was a school-mate of General Philip Sheridan of Civil war fame, at West Point.
John is listed in the 1870 & 1880 Nevada Census.

Eureka Reporter-April 12, 1907 (also page 4)
One by one the old pioneers of Eureka are answering the summons and passing to their reward. This week marks the passing of John B. Cronin who has been identified with one camp over twenty years. His death occurred on Wednesday night at the Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake where he was taken a couple of weeks ago. He received a slight injury to his foot a few months ago, which was not thought to be and almost before anyone realized that he was ill, gangrene had set in and this is what cause his death. the deceased was 65 years of age last June. He was born in Ireland but came to America at the age of nine years. He settled with his parents in Washington D.C. where he grew to manhood and in the year 1863 went to California and from there to Nevada in 1865. In 1887 twenty years ago he moved his family to this city and has resided here ever since being engaged in the boot and shoe business. he leaves a wife and six children-Daniel B. Cronin, M. F. Cronin, John Cronin, Mrs. Patrick Shea, Miss Clara and Katie Cronin, all whom reside in Eureka. John B. Cronin was an upright honest citizen and a man whose friends were only limited to the number of his acquaintances. his death will be mourned by not only his relatives but scores of others who will miss him from the walks of life. A sad feature in connection with Mr. Cronin's death as the fact that the families of two of his children Danniel B. Cronin and Mrs. Patrick Shea are now quarantined for diphtheria. Frank Cronin went to Salt lake yesterday to make arrangements for the shipment of the body to Eureka this morning. The funeral services will be conducted from the residence Sunday at 1:30 P.M.

Eureka Reporter=April, 1907
Funeral of J. B. Cronin
The funeral services over the remains of J. B. Cronin were conducted form the family residence on Sunday afternoon. Rev. Father O' Donahue officiating. A quartette consisting of Frank Beesley, Joseph Hollings, Frank Garrity and Ed Bonner rendered a ??. the funeral cortege that followed the remains to their last resting place in the city cemetery was one of the largest in the history of the city almost every available carriage in Tintic being in use.

Burial Information: Cronin, John
Birth: 6/24/1842
Death: 4/10/1907
Burial: 0/0/0
Place of Birth:
Place of Death:
Cause of Death:
Grave Location: Eureka Cemetery
Source: DAR
Comments:
Utah History Research Center
Cemetery Burials Database

Burial Information: Cronin, John
Birth: 6/24/1842
Death: 4/10/1907
Burial: 0/0/0
Place of Birth:
Place of Death:
Cause of Death:
Grave Location: Eureka Cemetery
Source: DAR
Comments:
Relatives: Cronin, Margaret (Spouse)

Apprenticed-in boot makers under listed in the 1860 census

Informant on Death Certificate: M.F.

What timeframe are you referencing? My great-great grandfather was William O'Brien, born c. 1883 in Philadelphia, but we believe was raised in Camden, NJ. He married Mary Bolger, and they had two daughters, Mary (Mae) and Marion. He was living with his in-laws in the 1910 census and then disappears. My grandmother (Mae) remembered very little of her father but said she attended his funeral for closure -- not sure when that was.
There may be a connection here if the dates match up. Feel free to e-mail me.

Hoping to find connections and any information on the Cronin's and Oleary's of Gurteenflugh/Inchigeelagh Cork. I found my GG/GF Pat Cronin marries Norry O'Leary Inchigeelagh 1839. They have children Ellen b. 1840, John b. 1842, Hannah b. 1845, Norry b. 1846, Mary b. 1949, Patrick b. 1852, Dennis b. 1854, Cornelius (my G GF) b. 1856, Nell b. 1859, Margaret b. 1862. Cornelius immigrates to Arlington, MA 1876. He marries Norah Cronin from Bantry.
I found stories of my Great Uncle Pat helping out during the IRA battle of 1921. Story mentions his sisters helping hide cars during the British battle. I do not know which sisters stayed behind. My Mother's cousin, Paul Cronin b. 1936, Arlington, MA visited Gurteenflugh years ago. He had very limited info to share. Such a pitty history was not shared and documented.... My family tree is Cronin if anyone would like to compare information.... Thanks
I also have a Mary Cronin (b.1834) in my family tree from Ireland who lived & died in Hamilton (20 Nov 1921). She came over from Ireland about 1876 and married Michael Gavin who also came from Ireland at that time. They lived in the Dundas area and I believe she had brothers who came as well, Timothy & Michael Cronin, who also settled in the West Flamborough area from Dundas to the Freelton area. I'm not sure where in Ireland they hail from either. Our Mary's ages are very close (1 year apart) maybe they are related? Did your Mary have any Cronin relations in the area that you know of?

I just found this--5 years late but--Mary A. married a William Humphrey. They had 2 children. William jr. died in infancy and Annie never married and died in the 1960s. She and my grandfather (William E. Cronin) lost their mothers at an early age. I don't know what happened to William Humphrey Sr. but I do know that according to census reports the kids were living with my greatgrandfather and his 2 brothers.
I also found the 1860census for Manchester NH and found a Patrick Crownin, his wife, Ann and 2 children(Timothy & Edward) but they list a Cornelius Cronin as living in the same apartment. He is about 3 years younger than my grt. grt. grandfather. I'm assuming he was Patrick's brother.

Sarah Kelch Roe Cronin

I am searching for information on Sarah Jane Kelch Roe Cronin. Sarah Jane Kelch was born about Feb 1830 in Virginia. Census records show that both her parents were born in Virginia.

Sarah Roe Kelch married Basil Roe about 1850. Basil Roe was born about 1830 in Ohio, possibly in Monroe County. Basil and Sarah Roe were living in the household of William Crum on the 1850 Census for Elk Township, Noble County, Ohio. They had one child, son William Roe, born about 1852 in Noble County, Ohio. Basil died between 1850 and 1860.

Sarah Kelch Roe then married Samuel Cronin about 1861. They had four daughters (Martha b. 1862, Emily b. 1864, Mary b. 1867, and Charlotte b. 1869) in Washington County, Ohio. Samuel and Sarah Cronin are found on the 1870 Census for Liberty Township, Washington County, Ohio; the 1880 Census for Dalzell Township, Washington County, Ohio; and the 1900 Census for Liberty Township, Washington County, Ohio. Samuel and Sarah Cronin both died in 1906 and were buried in the Dalzell Ridge Cemetery in Washington County, Ohio.

Sarah Jane Kelch may have been a daughter of Leonard and Elizabeth Kelch of Tyler County, Virginia. Her son William Roe claimed to have a grandmother with the surname of Perry.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Julie

Discovering the Cronins is relatively new to me too as my maternal side didn't discuss them much! If you contact me on jj.sparlarc@btinternet.com I may be able to fill in some gaps for you on Mary's side. There is a link (slightly tenuous but repeated elsewhere in the family!) to the Spanish Armada!

Regards

Judy

Thank you very much for that info. I must check it out with my records and find any matches.

No, Daniel didn't emigrate. He stayed in the area to my knowledge and I am finding it very difficult to find out much about him unfortunately. Records here in Ireland are lacking to say the least!

Thanks again!

I have Cronin ancestors from Fossa, Killarney. I know very little about what happened to them. I think it's a long shot to ever finding out, considering how common the surname is and that I have no idea where in the US they landed or ended up! Their father was Daniel Cronin and their mother was Mary (nee Cronin - to make it even more confusing!!!) They show up in the 1901 census but not all appear the 1911 version. I presume they started going to the US between these dates but can't be sure . . .

What I do know is my grandfather had 4 uncles that went to the USA.
1) Lawrence Cronin born around 1889. Had a son, Thomas, who was a soldier (in the U.S.)
2) Corneilus (Con) Cronin, born around 1891. Married Molly Lynch, from Killarney (then went to the U.S.)
3) James (Jim) Cronin, born around 1893.
4) John D (Daniel?) Cronin.

Any information would be greatly greatly appreciated!!!

I am trying to find relatives of Robert Cronin, born about 1914 in Chicago, Illinois. He died in 1988.
His mother was Gertrude Goggin and I believe his father's name was Benjamin Cronin. I believe...Benjamin was born about 1888 in Chicago; but I do not have any documents to verify this.
Robert had an older brother, Victor which was born about 1908 in Chicago.
Robert is buried at St. Mary's cemetery in Evergreen Park, Cook County, Illinois.
His parents divorced, maybe in the 1920's?
I am having a heck of a time trying to trace my two cousins, Victor and Robert...don't know if they married or where they ended up living.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
It only had the year and his name.
I was hoping he or Victor had married and had children; but I can not seem to find anything.
Gertrude was my great aunt.
This family has been so hard to find information as Gertrude and Benjamin divorced when the boys were young.

Hi Helena,
Yes, it's really difficult to find information. I've always wanted to go to Kanturk to do some research, but I'm not sure I'll ever get there. Got within 5 KM on a bus tour in 1997.
My grandmother, Julia, died when my mother was just two years old and she was raised by a paternal aunt. Didn't see much of her father growing up. The only reason I have the names I do is my grandfather wrote a letter to my mother when I was born and included the names. I've always wondered if anyone notified her family of her death. His family wasn't in favor of the marriage, so it's possible.
If I learn anything, I'll let you know.
Warm regards.
Pat
