Alida (Cronkhite) Eckler of Warren, Herkimer County, NY

I am working on a DAR application for my wife and trying to get some primary source proof of her Birth and Connection to Herny and Hannah (Shafer) Cronkhite. Although her information is not central to the Application (she is not her wife's link to the Patroit) all other people using Peter Eckler have listed Alida as a member of the Conklin Family and to put in an application with different information will required primary source proof.

I have much indirect proof that she was a Cronkhite. The person that did the original 1970 Eckler Book believes his book was in error. My guess is many of the DAR applications use his work and the work of his father as proof. The many Cronkhite Family Trees published and online list Alida as the 10th Children of Henry and Hannah. There is even a Cronkhite Book that lists dates that Alida first as a Cronkhite and later as an Eckler signs for the proceeds on Henry's Will. The problem is that none of the Primary Source ie Will Folder exists at the Probate Office only the Letters of Admin.

I am hoping that someone has some information that might help me. I really want to correct the Eckler Family History and put in a proper application for my wife but I am running into trouble findinf any acceptable proof.

Alida (Cronkhite) Eckler

Born: 19 Aug 1803 Danube, Herkimer, New York, USA
Note: This date is unproven and is based on her grave. Some people have her birth as early as 1797 and as late as
1805
Died: 07 Jan 1894 Stark, Herkimer, New York, USA

Buried in Springfield Cemetery with Henry Eckler but grave only lists her as "ALIDA"

Husband:

Born: 7 Jan 1797, Warren, Herkimer, New York, USA
Died: 10 Jun 1840 Warren, Herkimer, New York, USA

Henry's Parents: Peter and Christina (Kramer) Eckler

Parents:

Henry Cronkhite
Born: 9 Jan 1768, Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA
Died: 1815, Danube, Herkimer, New York, USA

Born 1772 likely Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA
Died: After 1856, Warren, Herkimer, New York, USA
Note Hannah is also the second wife of Peter Eckler, Henry Eckler's Father

Thanks,

Mike
mike@schulerfamily.org
http://www.schulerfamily.org
I have some information about a Gabriel Cronkite, born ca1788 in NY (possibly Romulus, Seneca Co.) and his wife Martha, born ca1789 in NY, who settled in Novi Township, Oakland Co. MI before 1840. Among their children were Watson, Harriet, Jackson, Washington, Sarah (Sally), and Martha, all born between 1813 and 1826 in NY. There don't seem to be too many Gabriel Cronkites around and so I wonder if you can confirm that mine belongs to your family?

Jacob and Bathsheba (Surdam( Cronkhite

I am researching the names of the children of Jacob and Bathsheba (Surdam) Cronkhite. Jacob was born in 1778 in N.Y. He is the son of Jacob and Ann Furgeson. He moved to Hoosick in the late 1700's or very early 1800;s. Some of the children were Corydon, Sylvia, and Mahala. According to a write up in a Gratiot Co., Mi. atlas in the late 1800's. Corydon states that he is one of 12 children. Corydon and Sylvia have moved to Gratiot Co., Mi. by that time. Sylvia married a Waterman Curtis and Corydon had married a Malinda Fisk back in N.Y. I believe Mahala had also moved to Mi. That only accounts for 3 of the 12. Does anyone out there have a more complete listing of the names of the rest of the children of Jacob and Bathsheba? Help please. Vic v&ccronkite@cmsinter.net

Hi Bob!
The Cronkhite family I am researching did come from new York. During the Revolutionary War they were loyalists and were relocated to Fredericksburg, Ontario. What is somewhat confusing is I believe there is more than one part of the family that went to Canada, and they all used the same bible names, Jacob, Abraham, etc. The family I am researching for is Jacob, born 1796 in Fredericksburg. I believe his father was Abraham. Abraham would have been a child during the war. I believe Abraham was born in New York, and his father was a loyalist. I just haven't gotten the documents to make the links. There was more than one Abraham in New York at that time.

If I come across any Cronkhites in Oakville I will let you know. By the way, one thing I have discovered in these old records in Canada is the names Cronkhite/Cronkwright/Cronkright/Cronkrite/Cronk are all used interchangeably so keep an eye out for the various spellings. I suggest checking church records. Also some towns have local records. I visited Hungerford Twp. and they had census, land, directories and other records. Try checking Ontario Gen Web also.

Good luck!

Carolyn

They had four daughters: Adeline, Lona Margaret (my grandmother) born 1889, Christina, and Nina.

Rachel Cronkhite was probably from the Prince Edward Island/Trenton area. Around the early 1890s they lived around Deux Rivieres or Brent in Renfrew County. Henry Cavler was a logger on the Ottawa River. They later moved to the Trenton area, and then to Hamilton. Henry worked at a steel mill on the bay in Hamilton.

Rachel and Henry are buried near Hamilton, along with their oldest daughter, Adeline. Lona married Alexander Webster and moved to Michigan. They had four daughters: Irene, Hazel (my mom), Olive and Bernice. Christina married ? Mepham and stayed in Hamilton. They are probably buried there, although I can't find them in the registry. They had two daughters, Myrtle and Alleen. Nina married Carl Jacobson and moved to Michigan. They had four children: Carl, Norma, Virginia and William.

Does anyone have information on this family? The only Rachel Cronkhite I found was born about 1810. I haven't been able to locate Henry Cavler either. Does anyone know what happened to Myrtle and Alleen Mepham?

I am very interested in information on the Cronkhite family. Is there a family tree out there? The Cronkhites seemed to settle around Kingston, Prince Edward, and the Georgian Bay.

My mother, Hazel Webster Farber, is now 88. We plan to take a trip to Ontario this spring. I would like to be able to confirm where her mother, Lona Margaret Cavler, was born and raised. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Basha Cronkite of Canterbury, N.B., Canada

My name is Robert Cronkrite, we might be related. I have a Henry Cronkhite (29 Sept. 1745) who moved to N. B. after the Revolutionary War. He belonged to the King's American Regiment and fought with the British. At the End of the war the regiment went to N.B. to disband. He married Elizabeth (Grant, previous marriage) and they had 7 children,Henry,Abraham,Mary B.,Simon,Jabez, Reuben and Jacob. I have no record of a Basha, but there are a lot of blank spaces in my research. There are numerous families in that area, Woodstock,Southhampton, and into Maine. I believe that all the Cronkhite's (different spellings) are related and descend from Henry. Now Henry was the oldest son of Jacobus Cranckheyt (1721) who was born in Tarrytown, N.Y.The American Patriarch of thie family was Harck Syboutszen (Kranckheyt) ( 1620 ) from Langendyck, Holland. Please contact me so we can trade information, this is a very Large family, Thank you C_O_BOB@hotmail.com

Mary/Maria Cronkite daughter of Hendrik Cronkite

I believe that my great grandmother was Abigail CASWELL who was the granddaughter of James D. DELONG. My problem is with the wife of James DELONG. Many researchers show Mary CRONKITE as his wife while others show Elizabeth SISSON as his wife. If I follow Mary CRONKITE back in some GEDCOMs, I see that her mother was Mary/Maria DELONG who is the older sister of James D. DELONG. This would mean that James married his niece. Although not unheard of, it is unusual. Does anyone have any proof of his marriage?

Some researchers list two marriages (SHAW/SISSON) and at least one researcher I have seen, lists three (CRONKITE/SHAW/SISSON)

He and my great Aunt Louisa Jane Ladell were married in Enniskillen Township on September 3,1884, and most of their children were born in Petrolia. They did live in Spring City, PA for a few years, and eventually settled in Detroit. Henry died there in 1946.
Hope this is of some help to you.
Pat McLean

Hi!

I'm interested in learning anything that I can about Rebecca Cronkite. All I know about her is she married George Dobbin (b. 1784) sometime before 1804. That's the year she gave birth to her son, Andrew. In all, George and Rebecca had 3 sons...Andrew, Patrick, and George. The Cronkite-Dobbin family moved to the states in 1807...then to Canada, then to upstate NY. One of her sons (George) moved back to Ireland at some point.

I have absolutely NO info about her or the Cronkite's she came from...and I would love some leads!

Thanks,
Bonnie
