I am trying to verify that Mary Crook married my ggg grandfather about 1820-1830 in Preston or Wigan , Lancashire. His name was John Atherton. In 1851 they lived in Kent Street, Preston. I have lots of details from census's of all dates but need confirmation of their marriage.

Crook Family Tree

Hello,

I am researching my family tree and have decided to start with my dad's family. So far my research has got me to my dad's grandad (frederick Crook).

One part of my research which I seem to be struggling with is my dad's mums' side of the family. Her name is Maud Crook (nee Cullingworth) and I am trying to find her parents - i think they were Frank Harry Crook & Louisa Crook who I think was born Louisa Wolverson - but I am stuck at this point!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Herb,

I saw your post of 2003. If you are still interested I have more information on the Crook line in Nova Scotia. I am trying to learn more about John Crook in Lunenburg. I have learned that he was born in 1712 in England (possibly Cornwell).

Sara and Robert had two daughters, May (1895) and Emma (1899), both born in Ambleside, Westmorland. May married William Hodgson Sep qtr 1928 in Barrow-in-Furness and later lived at 14 Warley Drive, Morecambe, Lancashire in late 1935 when her mother died. I don't beleive Wm and May had any children and they later divorced!? May was a buyer for a large store in Sheffield, Yorkshire (possibly after her divorce). I do not know when/where she died.
Emma was my grandmother and I have all her data.

Obit: Leroy Crook of Iowa (1919-2009)

(Raymond) LeRoy Crook, 90, of Emmetsburg passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at the Emmetsburg Care Center, Emmetsburg.

Funeral service for LeRoy Crook will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Holy Family Church in Emmetsburg. Father Clem Currans will officiate.

Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Emmetsburg.

Visitation will be today, Thursday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6 p.m. and a Parish Vigil at 7 p.m.

LeRoy was born in Streater, IL, on Feb. 2, 1919, to Roy and Mertyl Crook. The family moved to Iowa when LeRoy was three weeks old. He attended country school through the eighth grade.

LeRoy and Irene Crook were married April 24, 1940. LeRoy worked most of his early life on the farm. When he moved to Emmetsburg his first job was with Middleton’s Lumber Yard. He then worked at the Emmetsburg Rendering Works for 18 years, and then to his most favorite job, the custodian for Emmetsburg Middle School. LeRoy was a “people” person and was constantly surrounded by his many friends while he worked there. He retired after more than 20 years of service with the school system, but stayed in constant touch with his many friends.

LeRoy’s biggest fear was that he might in some way hurt someone’s feelings, anyone’s, and that they may not like him. That never, ever happened.

LeRoy and Irene Crook lived life to the fullest. They danced, they camped, they visited friends, they loved family throughout their lives together. Only until the last couple years did their lives slow down, but they still loved family and kept in contact with their many friends.

LeRoy is survived by his wife of 69 years, Irene. Also surviving are a son , Bill Crook and his wife Mary Jo of Cylinder; three grandchildren, Joleen and husband Darwyn Frideres, Ron and wife Lou Ann Crook, and Linda and husband Brian Garman; six great grandchildren, Dillon, Mike, Tia, Chloe, Jade and Hana; along with many nieces and nephews.

A special mention of a devoted neighbor, Sally Brennan, who was a constant vigil of the Crooks in their later years, bringing them goodies and conversation.

They and his many friends and acquaintances will miss him.

Annie Crook died on 1 Mar 1976.
I would totally ignore the V in Bollzoney as the V is right next to the letter B on the keyboard. It was a type-o.
Annie was raised in an orphange and since her Dad did not read or write English (only spoke it) someone at the orphange probably came up with this new spelling for Bollzoney/Bolzoni that was used on all of Annie's records.
EdSwartz
swartzel@comcast.net

I am attempting to find someone who is related to my children's mother, Iris Brown Cockrell Ross. We were divorced about 30 years ago and I lost all contact with her family. Her grandparents were Clyde Masburn and Annie Gertrude (Flippen) Crook. Iris was their daughter's, Edna Hortense "Tess" Brown Rosser's oldest child. All of them are now deceased. I had custody of my 3 children and am now attempting to gather information for my children on her side of the family. I have heard that a daughter of Tess's sister, Joan Allen (deceased), could help me but I have no idea where she is or what her name may be now.

Need some help on my Ritchey line

I need some ancestry help on my Daddy's (Norvel William Ritchey, son of Floyd Eldora Ritchey and Pauline Francis Crook) side. For what it's worth, I'm from Tennessee, and that's where my parents are from as well. Here's what I know:

Dad's paternal grandparents were Frank Ritchey (1881-1974) and Josie Elizabeth Smith (1889-1985). His paternal great grandparents were (I believe) Thomas or Truxsel Ritchey and Miranda ___. That's as far as I can seem to really get with much success on that line.

Dad's maternal grandparents were Claude Ray Crook (1891-1975) and Dellar May Scott (1895-1966). I think Claude's mother's maiden name was Malone, but I don't have a first name for either of Claude's parents. As for Dellar Mae, I believe her mother's first name was Mary, but that's all I have.

Can anyone help me fill in some blanks? I feel like if I can get even a few leads, maybe things will open up for me a little and I can get somewhere.

Thanks in advance for ANY assistance you can offer.

I have a Grandmother from Treddington, Gloucesershire, England named Eliza Crook. She was born in 1805 to John Crook and Martha Newman. She married a Joseph Halford from the same area. Are any of you her descendents? If so, would love to hear from you. I visited Gloucestershire last September and it is a very beautiful area!

Thank-you!!

Randy Halford

I am trying to find descendents of an Aunt I never knew as I am blocked on certain parts of my tree. I have only just found out May's married name. I have done OK going backwards on that side of the family but now need to go the other way i.e. after 1911. I can locate May and family in the 1911 Census but want to find descendents thereafter.

Details re May:

Born in Liverpool, Lancashire, UK

Parents: Achason [Archie] and Laura Pritchard

Siblings: Clifford [1905] and Harold [1907]

Many thanks.

Jacki
I am interested in information about Conrad Crook (b unknown).
He is the father of Conrad 1756,Marte 1758,Maria 1760,Margriet 1762,Henrikus 1768, and Jacob 1770. I have information already about his descendants: Jacob 1770, Jeremiah 1801,Brunson 1847 (the line I am following) and forward. I would like to know more about where Conrad came from and his father, gfather, etc. I am having problems figuring out where He came from before living in Kingston, Ulster, New York. There are many Crooks ( sp Chroek ) in the area but I don't know if they are connected in any way. I would love to find any information. Thank you!

PHOTOS: Siblings - Jake Crook and Maggie Crook Laut of Waterloo, IL circa 1900

I bought a photo identified as Jake Crook and was taken in Waterloo, IL. The photo of Maggie Crook Laut was taken by Meier of St. Louis, MO. I believe they are brother and sister.

I believe this may be Jacob Crook, the son of Louis and Christena Crook, and the brother of
Charles, Christine, Elizabeth, Margaret (Maggie Crook Laut), Ellen, and William Crook who were enumerated in the 1880 Census
living in Waterloo, Monroe Cty, IL. Jake's WWI Draft Application says he was born 17 April 1878 in Fults, Monroe Cty, IL and has a wife Caroline.

I am not related, but I would like to connect this photo with a family member or family researcher.
It was purchased with another photo identified as Maggie Crook Laut.Maggie died in St. Louis in 1942 of cardiovascular renal disease and was buried in New St. Marcus Cemetery.

Please contact me if you have an interest in this 100 year old photo. It belongs with family.

Kathy@FamilyWeSearch.com

Crooks of South Wales and Swansea

Does anybody have any information on Crooks of the Swansea area? I am looking for information on the siblings and ancestors of George Crook b. 1868 (who married Mary Ridd) and whose father may have been called William Crook (b. 1841) and whose mother was called Ann. In turn, William may have been the son of Thomas Crook (1812) and Jane (1820). I know that George has a sibling William who went to Australia (and I think I have identfied his descendants). But he may also have had a brother Thomas who worked for a while a penrice castle as a teenager and then went to London, married an Emily, worked on the railways and started a large london family. There was also perhaps a brother James, a brother Arthur and sister Elizabeth. George also had an Aunt Sarah Medley.

Any information, however tenuous, is welcomed on these Swansea Crooks.

Seth Crook

Re: where are we from

As far as I know in the UK, the Crook families are strongest in Scotland, Norfolk and in and around Devon (my family being from there).

The Crook surname has several possible origins:

1) Old Norse, Krokr - translation: 'hook'
2) Geographical, ie from a person/family who lived in a place called Crook (I think there's one up north?), ie John of Crook gets eventually shortened to John Crook.
3) A person who had a hunchback. John who has the crooked back ...
4) A shepard, from the crook tool they use.
5) The most likely (I believe) is a person/family that lived on a bend (river/road/etc...)
6) Variations of names by bad spelling and illiteracy. Crook, Cook, Crooke, Crooks.

The form crook as a thief is very unlikely, and not one i've ever encountered before.
My grandmother was born in 1914 in Addingham and later adopted.
Her mother's name was Mary Winifred Crook, nursery governess at Trenwick, Market Weighton. (No father's name on the birth certificate.)
My grandmother's name was also Mary Winifred Crook (later Smith) - she died in 1993. I am fascinated to discover that her mother may have had other children at this time that we knew nothing of and would be grateful for any other information you have.
As a family we have been unable to trace any further as adoption records relating to my grandmother were destroyed.
