New Information for Greenbrier Crookshanks

Kristy Edenfield here. I am descended from Elizabeth, (d/o John & Mary Cloverfield Crookshanks) & her daughter, Rebecca.

All along, for the past 20 years (when I finally placed Elizabeth in the John & Mary household), I never believed that she married Nathaniel Dietz…it just didn't add up.
1) She didn't use the Dietz name on the 1850 census
2) The Dietz name wasn't used on her death record in 1858
3) Rebecca's death record showed her parents as Elizabeth CROOKSHANKS & John CROOKSHANKS
4) Nathaniel Dietz was alive & well with a wife named Isabel on the 1850-1880 censuses in Greenbrier

However, there was NO household in Virginia that supported a "John Crookshanks" that could have been Elizabeth's family (husband) on the 1830 & 1840 censuses.

So, the past week I checked burial records in Greenbrier.

At the OLD AMWELL CEMETERY in the Meadow Bluff District of Greenbrier (which is where everyone lived), there is a tombstone that reads… "IN MEMORY OF CATHERINE CROOKSHANKS, CONSORT OF NATHAN DIETZ, DIED Jan 16, 1827. AGE NOT KNOWN" (per Greenbrier Historical Society..Cemetery Records)

I then checked the 1900 census record of James Deitz (supposed son of Elizabeth & Nathaniel). He shows he was born in Jan of 1827. My hypothesis is that Catherine died during the childbirth of James Deitz & that CATHERINE, NOT Elizabeth was the wife or 'consort' of Nathaniel. If there IS a record of an Elizabeth marrying Nathaniel…then perhaps Catherine's middle name is Elizabeth.

Furthermore…digging deeper into the census records, if you examine the 1830 census of Mary in Greenbrier, you will notice she has younger children & a 30 something year old woman in her HH. My thoughts are that these are Elizabeth, Rebecca & possibly George who is supposedly Elizabeth's son. It appears that apparently William may also still be living at home with Mary at this time, as he does not marry until 1835.

It is appearing as if Elizabeth had her children out of wedlock to me. But why state a name like "John Crookshanks" as a husband or at the least, father of Rebecca? Out of shame or guilt? Or was there somethiing else, like incest?

What are your thoughts?

John D. CROOKSHANKS + Barbara J CRAWFORD abt 1847 Virginia

Hello! I am working on my husband's family history.

He has an oral tradition that says one of his lines had Native American heritage, which I believe may have been Cherokee. I do not have a huge amount of information, but I believe the Cherokee part came in from the Crawford family.

Although the immediate Crawford family has no Louisiana connection, I do not know where they came from, so there could be one farther back!

I have a Barbara J. Crawford born around 1830 (+/- 5 years) in Virginia, parents also supposedly from Virginia. She married a John D. Crookshanks around 1847 in Virginia (what is now West Virginia). They had 10 children between 1847-1861. All were born in Virginia, but it is now West Virginia. Their children were: Austin F., Alberta Isabell, Mary Virginia, Euphrates, Amarilla, James William, Martin L., Aiken Snyder, Joseph A., and John Sherman. We have a photo of Amarilla, and she certainly appears to have Native American blood.

I also have, in a different line, an Octavia Ellen Crawford, born in Virginia (now West Virginia) around 1828. She married Henry Hedrick, and they had 8 children: Marchal M., Arvison, Louisa Irabien, Leviga Wergman, Ledonah F., Lorena, Floyd D., and Leroy. I have no idea if Barbara and Octavia are related in any way, but it seems likely, given they lived in close proximity to each other.

If you have any information on this family, I would be more than happy to share what I have with you!

Austin Fisher Crookshanks was born 02-15-1847. His parents are John Crookshanks and Barbara Jane Crawford. They were married 06-03-1846 in Greenbrier County, VA which later became West Virginia in 1863. I descend from Austin's sister Alverda who married Andrew Cavendish McClung. Other siblings of theirs include Mary Virginia b. 09-23-1849, E.H. born 05-15-1851, Amarillie Elander born 02-03-1853, James William born 02-03-1853, Martin Luther born 04-07-1857, Eupen Snider born 03-15-1859, Joseph Aurel born 06-04-1861 and John Sherman born 12-29-1864. I don't have a lot of info on these people, only a piece of paper from my grandmother with their names. Hope this helps some.

Elihu was born 10 April 1782 in Colebrook, Litchfield, CT, married Margaret 19 Aug 1816 in Schroon, Essex, NY.

Margaret was born 1795 (no date) in Salem, Washington, NY and died in Schroon. (no date).

They had 13 children from 1818 to 1855: Rensselaer, Orin, James Francis, Sanford, Anna, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary Helen, Emily, Amelia, John Baker (JB), Eunice Ellen and Charles. All born in Schroon. Think she had post-partum depression?

Can anyone fill in the blanks on Margaret? Parentage, birth and death dates, etc?

George Crookshanks had lived in South Carolina prior to moving to Tennessee in 1783. Our family was believed to have come into America through either New York or Philadelphia.

Don't think my line of Cruikshanks ended up in Tennessee. Tracked our emigrant to Quebec, then to SC wjere he was naturalized, down to Autauga County, AL where he married in 1823 and was murdered in 1830.

I have changed e-mail addresses twice, but I am still looking for a prior connection to George Crookshanks, formerly of North Carolina, who is shown to have purchased land in Washington County, Tennessee in 1783. He was my ggggrandfather and this is the earliest known record I have found. Washington County was previously part of North Carolina, before the state of Tennessee was established. Does anyone know of any knowledge of Crookshanks in North Carolina, prior to 1783.

My files include a Ban Buren Crookshanks, b. 2 Dec 1879, married 16 Feb 1906 Nicholas Co., WV to Ella F. Neff, b/abt.1883. Van Buren was s/o Benjamin Franklin Crookshanks and his 2nd wife Martha Ann Hart. B.F. was s/o Robert who was s/o John (a soldier of the Revolution). Hope these are the Van & Ella you are seeking. I would appreciate knowing their descendants.

What time span are you speaking of on this post? I am trying to find the father of my ggrandfather, George Benjamin Cruikshank b. March, 1855 in MS. The census shows his mother, Ellen M. ? b. ca 1835 in TN. Any hope??

Yes. Have info. on Crookshanks in Tenn. My Ggggranndfather was George Crookshanks of Newport, Tenn. His son's were George, Robert and William.

I believe these are the right people as I have their marriage date the same as you. Van and Ella were my husband's grandmother's parents. Her name was Reva Crookshanks I don't know about any siblings yet. She was first married to a Cecil Stover then later to Frank Johnson. If you have any info on siblings that you could share. That would be great. Thanks for the other info.
