Alexander Crosbie - Jennie McClymont (Scotland)

Just beginning my research on Jennie McClymont married to Alexander Crosbie, I believe in Scotland. I estimate their birth years would be 1862-1880 (wide range, but I really don't know their children)

Their daughter, Willamena Baron Crosbie, married Archibald Ross, I think in Canada.

I don't have access to Scotland Census, but did see Alexander and Jeanie Crosbie listed in 1901 with children James D, and Willamina B. Location Ayshire

If anyone has access to this census, I would so appreciate the information from it. That would give me some approximate dates for them. Thank you in advance.

I've not found marriage record or emigration info. One records suggests that Jessie's father was David born abt 1786 in Scotland and mother was Margaret born abt 1805 in Hopewell, Westmorland, New Brunswick. Can't find any confirmation on that or Margaret's maiden name. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve,
Thanks a million for getting in touch - I don't think I was ever notified about the other people who have replied !!!
I would be very interested indeed in anything you can tell me about Dr Leslie Crosbie.
What was the name of the house in Ardfert. When my great aunt Lucy moved to Malahide, Co Dublin she called her house Ardfert.
There was some story that Dr Crosbie used to post himself at the crossroads in Ardfert and people knew that they had to go there to see him if they were ill !!!
Wonder is the photo of Leslie Lucy & daughter Alice the same one as mine ..... augereau6@wanadoo.fr if you want to reply to me directly.
Thanks a million again - cheers, Liz

Crosbie of Ardfert and Ballyheigue

I have a research interest in the Crosbie family, landlords of Ardfert and Ballyheigue for over 300 years. A descendant from Co. Wicklow was the first Irishman to fly, the father of Irish flight. He was Richard Crosbie and he ranks highly among the most intrepid of early balloonists. Scientist, showman, entrepreneur, aeronaut, he dazzled the world of the 18th century. He made three attempts to cross the Irish Sea by balloon in 1785, but was unsucccessful. Nevertheless, his achievements were quite sensational at that time, and he won great public acclaim. He later emigrated to America - perhaps to escape his creditors - where he also conducted at least one balloon experiment, in New York. He was in America from 1790 to 1819, and was living in poverty in Baltimore, Maryland in 1819. However, very little is known about this period of his life.
I have recently published "Ascend or Die: Richard Crosbie, Pioneer of Balloon Flight" (The History Press Ireland, 2010). I would be very grateful for any futher information on Crosbie's life between 1790 to 1819.

Bryan Mac Mahon

Dear wcleolinda,

You wouldn't, by any chance, be related to the Crosbie family in Ballymahon, in county Longford, would you? My Granddad was Patrick Jospeph Crosbie, born 1918, with lots of family. I think that his father was a cobbler. His sister, Judy (now Riley) stayed there but he served in the British Army in the second world war and died in England. I have been trying to find out about the crosbie family in Longford as we don't really know how long they have been in Ireland, etc. Isn't it a Scottish name?
Hope to hear from you,
Best Wishes,
Emily Edwards

Hi, Jeff.

I guess we are cousins. Thanks for sending the picture of the Thomas' gravestone. That's new information for me.

My major source for my Crosbie family is research done by my grandfather in 1936. Included is an excerpt from a letter that Lenox sent him in 1923 which states "Homer, Peter, Lizzie, John, Will, Jeanette, Thomas and Lenox came first (in 1848 on a very small sailing vessel). Four stayed behind James, Susan, Mary, Jane came the next year when Father sent them passage money. The journey took about two and half months from Glasgow to Pomeroy. Three sisters of the later contingency found beaux on the way over."

My grandfather had no more information about the Crosbies in Scotland -- just a bit on the McMasters and McVeys. I also have minimal information from another poster. I'd be happy to share what I have with you.

Bill Worthington
genworthy (at) comcast.net
Hi Bill,

I am also descended from Thomas and Janette through their youngest son Lenox. Lenox was born in 1847/8 (I have seen both years listed). His obit said that he came to America at 6 months of age so the entire family had to have arrived about that time. In the 1850 Census for Meigs, there are also 2 McMaster families listed...I have wondered if they were related to Janette (her brother and his son) and that is why Thomas's family settled in Meigs county. If you haven't come across this, I believe it is Thomas's tombstone in Meigs county

http://www.ohiogravestones.org/view.php?id=24251

Janet's however is not yet documented on this site. I don't have much info about them however prior to immigration, other than what I believe is their listing in the 1841 Scotland census. Hoping to make a trip Pomeroy sometime this year to hopefully get some more info. Would love to compare notes and hopefully fill in some gaps together.

Jeff

Hi Susann007

I did write back earlier today, but my message seems to have disappeared from the thread.

Yes please, I would be very interested in what you have, and any memories your dad has about his uncles and aunties.

In turn, I am happy to pass on whatever I have on the Crosbie family, although at the moment, it isn't a great deal. However, you are more than welcome.

Please get back in touch when you can.

Best wishes.

Jan

Re: David Crosbie

Just to update:

I am still on the search for David CROSBIE and more info on his mum Ellen/Helen.
I have not had any luck locating them together after 1881 census, when they were in Edinburgh.
I know David married in Wigtown, but still can't locate his mother at that time. I am trying to find out when she died, and hopefully learn more that way.
I know she was still alive in 1898 when David married Janet (in Wigtown). It also appears she was still unmarried. I also know through family, that David and Janet moved to Glasgow sometime after their daughter was born (1901) and both of them died in Glasgow.
The real mystery lies with Ellen/Helen. if anyone can help me with suggestiosn on how and where to find out more, I would be very happy to receive them.
