During the Civil War, William R. enlisted at Cumberland, Md on March 6,1862, as a Private (in Company C, 2nd Regiment of the Potomic Home Brigade Maryland Infantry) to serve a period of 3 years.
At this time, he described himself as 5' 10" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and occupation of farmer name appears on the rolls of Company C from muster-in-date to April 1863.
In May & June1863, he was absent, sick in hospital in Cumberland, Maryland.
In July & August 1863 was absent without permissionwas again present from July 1863 until mid June, 1864.
In July & August, 1864, he was again absent, sick in Cumberland, Md.
Around this time, he was transferred to Company A Veteran Battalion, 2nd Regiment of the Potomic Home Brigade Infantry; the Company
A rolls show him present until his muster-out-date of March 7,1865 with the rank of Private.

After his Civil War service, he resided in Accident,Maryland for 2 years in Oakland, Maryland, for 9 years, George's Creek, Maryland, 4 or 5 years; Youngstown,Pennsylvania, for 9 years; Latrobe, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, for 2-3 years; Clearfield Co.,Pennslyvania, for 2 years; Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, for 2 years; Brownsville,Fayette Co.,Pennsylvania, for 1 year, and California, Washington Co., Pennsylvania. He was employed as a state boss and running engines.

William R. Cross appeared before George W. Kistner,Clerk of the Quarter Sessions Court in Westmoreland Co., Pa., to apply for an invalid pension was 55 at this time and was living in Unity Twp., Westmoreland Co., Pa. stated that "at Patterson Creek near Cumberland, Md., in the middle of June,
1864, he had contracted rheumatism from exposure and hard service." He was treated by the regiment surgeon for about 2 months and at various times afterwards for the same disease.
He claimed he was totally disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor.
