My name is Donald Crosswhite, and my mom was married to a man named George Washington Crosswhite about 36 years ago,he passed away many years ago.He adopted me, and 2 of my sisters after they were married. I dont know a whole lot about his family, but they were from Soddie Tenn.. I think that is how you spell the name of the city. We live in Atlanta, Ga., on the NW side right now. I know that George was in the army, and fought in world war 2.Does this help you n any way?

Not that I am aware of. I know that some families who were enslaved until the 1860's did not have a surname and took names of their own from places they had lived, people they admired or the owners of the land they lived on as soon as they were able.

I would like to locate and get to know this brother.

This group of papers also have 3 War Department cards. Two are Notice of Classification and one is notice to appear for physical exam. The fifth paper has notie of what clothing each soldier must bring with them. I will be very happy to make sure this packet gets into his family's hand or to a military agency that are interested in these papers.

Wonderful! It has been years since we were in Boone County, and visited all the cemeteries we could find. But you have done a great thing! My line from John goes to James Edward, William Ennis, and Eddie Lee Crosswhite. I am Lorna Louise Crosswhite Grove. I would love to visit, but we are getting too old to do too much climbing. If you would share the pictures I would appreciate it. Maybe someday my children or grandchildren can visit. We are living now near Little Rock, Arkansas.

I am trying to locate the death certificate and any ancestors of Iona Crosswhite. The family lived in Texarkana, Bowie Co Tx. I think Iona died Aug. 1984 in Miller Co, Ark., but I have been unable to get a copy of her death certificate. Iona is my great aunt. She is my grandfather, Frank B. Frazier's sister. He died in 1942, before I was born. His son, HL "Bud" Frazier is my father. Bud has been deceased for over 30 years.

I am trying to complete a written family genealogy, and cannot find information her ancestors may know.

I can't find Iona's mother's (Ada M. Frazier) maiden name. I cannot find where and when her father, Edward William Frazier, died. Any information will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Cathy Frazier Eaton

Crosswhite Pioneer Cemetery in Boone County, Missouri

Update: For many years there has been speculation that a pioneer cemetery in Boone County, Missouri belonging to the Crosswhite family was destroyed. This past summer, I located it in a State Park and worked with another researcher to get the State to agree to help clear it, do an archealogical study on it and then install fencing and signage for the cemetery.

Our efforts have paid off and as soon as the weather in Missouri warms up some, the Park employees will start on doing a clear burn to rid it of all the cedars growing in it. Three headstones have been recovered and are currently in safe storage. Those will be displayed at the guard shack to the park to keep vandals from breaking them. Another stone was located but we will know more about it after the archealogical study.

The stones found belong to 1) John Crosswhite (DOB: 06 Dec 1806 in Bourbon County, Kentucky DOD 16 Mar 1854 in Boone County, Missouri) married 22 Nov 1832 to Frances "Fanny" Stone (DOB: 15 Dec 1814 in Orange County, Virginia DOD: 07 Feb 1902 in Boone County, Missouri). 2) Their daughter, Elizabeth (DOB: 02 Nov 1833 in Boone County, Missouri DOD: 04 Dec 1834 in Boone County, Missouri) and 3) their daughter, Sally Jane (DOB: 1844 in Boone County, Missouri).

NOTE: The stones clearly say Crosswhite on them as the spelling of the last name. I have photos of them if you are interested.

We are anticipating the cemetery being finished late summer and then will proceed with the State's Pioneer cemetery declaration paperwork. Because it is within a State Park, it should be easy to have this accomplished (plus the Park Administrator has been WONDERFUL to work with). This has all been handled with the utmost respect for the people buried there (estimation is currently 5-7 people but study will reveal a better idea). Due to the age of the cemetery, disturbance of remains is a non-issue really but we want to preserve it for future generations and are being being helped by the State Archealogist.

A history of the ownership of the area is being compiled and will be put at the main gate also for future visitors plus photos of the work being done. Due to the location of the cemetery, you must be able-bodied to get to it (think up on top of a ridgeline that is STEEP). That in itself will help the cemetery not be vandalized by some errant person.

I'll be posting more as the project goes forward. Special thank yous to the people who donated the funds to purchase the fencing. The State Park is purchasing the signage and has agreed to maintain the cemetery once it is fenced in. Plus provide all the labor for clearing it out and actually putting the fence up.

Word has it there is another small Crosswhite cemetery in the nature preserve portion of the same Park...so looks like I have some more sleuthing to do to find it!! Wish me luck!

Ok, there are a ton of John Crosswhites but John Lou Crosswhite was born 01 April 1854 in Boone County, Missouri and Died 06 Jan 1930 in Hennesey, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma. He is buried in Union Cemetery in same town, county, state.

Sources for name & birth are:

1860 Federal Census of Platte County, Missouri page 829 Family Number 1040, W.H. Crosswhite.

1870 Federal Census of Platte County, Missouri page 353, Family Number 225, W.H. Crosswhite

Vida Surber Vance "The Missouri Crosthwaits-Crosswhites-Croswhites and their descendants. A Study of the Ancestry and posterity of William Crosthwait" Page 79

Sources for death and burial are his son, Roy E. Crosswhite's papers in possession of his son, Johnnie Leroy Crosswhite.

John Lou's great-granddaughter is one of the people doing the website I just mentioned earlier. There is a lot on the website and I think you'll find it helpful as it includes sources that help people confirm or even deny their research.

Hope that helps!

It has sources and is updated almost daily. Be sure to sign the guestbook when visiting as the ladies are working on it daily and are looking for more input on things. There are currently over 4,000 family members on it.

As for John...see my next email.

Wanda Gilchrist was my grandmothers sister and she passed away last year. I was hoping to get information on the family and how they are related to the townsends. My great grandmother did our family tree but some things are not adding up and I wanted to cross refrence her info with someone elses. I would ask my grandma but I don't think she would remember the family the way it really was at this time. If you can help in any way I would appreciate it.

Are you sure of your John Crosswhites birth date. I also have a John Crosswhite in the family, who was born 2/4/1854 in Boone Co. Mo. If I am reading this family tree right it looks like he was the son of William Henry Crostwait and Mary Margaret Turner. Is this the same person?

Someone must know of Arthur Crosswhite of Erwin Tennessee

Arthur married Pauline Beals in the late 1930s. Pauline was married to Walter Linwood Hopkins, my grandfather, before Arthur. She had a daughter that was just a baby when Walter passed away and she then married Arthur. The baby, a little girl, is said to be the daughter of Walter Hopkins. Her records have been sealed. I am interested in finding out what has happened to this child born abt. 1937-38?, she would be my aunt if Walter is her father. The rumor is that Walter married Pauline Beals because she was pregnant and the child was Arthur's and he was currently married. I would just like to find out the truth. My aunt who has Alzhiemer's has been looking for this child for years. We have a name, Mary Louise, but I'm beginning to think it is not the case. If anyone out there can shead some light on this family mystery please let me know. Pam Hannah

Crosthwait Cemetery in Boone County, Missouri

I just got back from touring the remains of the Crosthwait Cemetery in Boone County, Missouri. I grew up in the area close to the cemetery and knew it was located within a State Park (Finger Lakes State Park) but wasn't able to find anyone who could give me a definite idea of where it was within the park (or that it still existed...major mining/quarry area) until recently. The Park Superintendent (Debbie Newby) has been there for 11 years and offered to take me to the cemetery. It was a hike!!

The cemetery is overgrown by trees but the fence posts can still be seen, along with some barbed wire. The park is one of the only ones in Missouri that allows motorbikes and ATVs to travel through it and about three years ago, some bikers found 4 of the original headstones washed down into a creek (there are no others in the actual cemetery). They picked them up and gave them to Debbie who still has them and was gracious enough to allow me to photograph them. Debbie is very interested in clearing the trees out of the cemetery, fencing it off and putting up a sign to show it is the Crosthwait Cemetery. She said that they would use red cedar split rail fencing (per State Park codes) and put up a modest sign and didn't figure it would cost more than $500. I offered to try and find a local boy scout troop to do the work. What I need from you ... is help in getting the word out that there is an opportunity to re-claim this cemetery. Debbie would also like to have history on who is buried there, etc. to add to the State Park's information booth.

If you are interesed in either providing write-ups or making a financial donation, please email me and I'll send you the address for Debbie's office at the State Park. As I said I live not too far away and have contacts with the Scouts Troops in the area who can provide the work.

Now for the interesting tombstones:

Sally J.
Dau. of J & T
Crosswhite
Born Feb 11, 184?
Broken off

One footstone(?)
Initials of W. T. B.

John Crosswhite
Born
Dec. 6, 1806
Died
Mar. 16, 1854

Elizabeth F.
Dau. of J & T
Crosswhite
Born
Nov 2, 1833
Died
Dec. 1, 1834

Sally J.'s tombstone is broken off but still pretty legible; John's tombstone is in really good condition and pretty much all there; WBT's footstone is in good condition and Elizabeth's is in fairly good condition (hard to read the dates but the came out fairly good on the camera). I will be happy to email these to whomever would like them.

What Debbie is hoping to do is once the clearing is made and the fence is up, she would like to put the stones (or duplicates back up) and perhaps make some kind of markers for the others that we can 'prove' are buried there. She said that she has gotten several requests over the years but many people cannot make the hike to the cemetery (it is a hard hike) but she feels that the cemetery/ancestors need something to be remembered by. I was very impressed with her enthusiam and interest in the Cemetery.

Hello, I'm looking for information on Arther Crosswhite and Pauline Beals Hopkins. Pauline married Arthur after the death of my Grandfather, Walter Linwood Hopkins. Pauline had a daughter who has my Grandfather listed as her father on her birth certificate. We have found that her records are sealed but have been looking for her for years. We know her as Mary Louise but that may not be her current name if Arthur adopted her. I believe she was born in October of 1934, I may be off by a year or 2. This family is from Erwin Tennessee. We would really like to meet "Mary". If she truely is Walter's daughter I would like her to know us. We love family and would welcome a new sister, cousin, aunt. Please contact me at mpkjh@aol.com if you know her or anything about this family. Thank you

I visited Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Sturgeon, Missouri recently and there are many Croswhite's buried there. I have digital photos available to anyone who is interested in "stealing" them from my website.

Go to http://www.tendingmytree.homestead.com

Scroll down to the blue oval and click on Crosthwait/Croswhite names.

When you see a photo you want. Simply right click on it, choose Save picture As... and rename it to whatever you want.

Hope you enjoy....

Re: Wiley Crosswhite/Ola Hale-East TN

Well since I last posted a few years ago I have found out that Wiley and Ola went to the Roanoke Virginia area sometime after 1930. I also learned that the children's names I had were not correct but were a jumble of cousins etc. Also according to a family story I was told today, Wiley was climbing a mountain or hill or something with a high powered electric wire and two touched and he was electrocuted. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

I recently read your posting that mentioned that you had:

"I have 16 pages of Williams Crosswhite b1695 down with sources I would be glad to snail-mail to you if you want and then you could see how bad I messed up, but I need an address for your snail-mail "

Could I mail you some money for copying and a self-addressed, stamped-envelope and obtain a copy as well?

Any info is appreciated.

Elyce Croswhite
San Francisco, CA

Hi Jane, I'm Sandy Stith and I'm also in the John Crosswhite line. My line goes thru John b. ca 1770 Va to John Crosswhite b. ca 1827 Al. John Crosswhite and Clarence Buford Crosswhite are brothers.

I have your name in my files. I would love to correspond with you and maybe we can get more info on John Crosswhite b. ca 1770. I've been looking for his parents for years and years.

Sandy
sstith@ozarkmountains.com

I have a Clarence Crosswhite in my line thru his father John Crosswhite. John Born Ca 1770 VA might have gone to TN and then to Franklin Co., AL where we find John in the 1830 and 1840 census.

Would this be any relation to you. I have quite a big of info on this John Crosswhite/Crothwaite line.

Sandy

sstith@ozarkmountains.com
