Searching for a CROSTON family from Middlesex, England:

George CROSTON married Ann ECCLES and resided in Middlesex, England during the mid-1800's. I know of one son, John CROSTON, born circa Jul 1863 (+/-). He arrived in the United States circa 1884 and was naturalized by 1886.

He listed his residence in 1888 as New London, CT. In 1900 he is found in the census in Winchester, CT. He died circa 1910 in the Hartford, CT area. I have not, as yet, found his obituary.

He married Margaret DONNELLY in Brooklyn, NY on 12 Dec 1888, where she had family. Only DONNELLY family members signed as witnesses.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

BELPRE - Norma Elaine Croston Mayle, 83, died Wednesday (Oct. 20, 2010) at her home in Belpre, Ohio.

She was born on Nov. 23, 1926, in Athens County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Clarence and Olga Croston.

In 1944, she graduated as class salutatorian from Ames-Bern High School in Amesville, Ohio. After graduation she moved to Dayton, Ohio, and worked as a clerk-typist at Wright Field Air Force Base.

During her stay in Dayton, Ohio she was accepted into the City Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1951, she graduated as a registered nurse and began working at Crile Hospital in Berea, Ohio.

After her marriage to Darwin Mayle, the couple continued to reside and work in Berea. Later they returned to Belpre and joined Mayle Bros., the family business. She managed the office until her retirement from Mayle of Belpre Inc. in 1993.

She attended the Bethel Wesleyan Church in Plantsville, Ohio, in her early years and later in life became a member of the Rockland United Methodist Church in Belpre, Ohio. She enjoyed traveling and shopping on bus tours with her sisters and good friend Jean Klamforth.
She especially enjoyed visiting New Orleans.
A favorite activity was volunteering with the Belpre Holiday Lights displays. In 2001, she was named "Citizen of the Quarter" by the Belpre Area Chamber of Commerce.

She is survived by her son, Darwin Mayle Jr. and his wife, Diane, of Belpre; her brother, Kermit (Joanna) Croston of Columbus, Ohio; her sister, Velma (Ken) Striblin of Berea, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Services will be held Saturday (Oct. 23) at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Wesleyan Church in Plantsville, Ohio, with Pastor Jack Berry officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Herman Cemetery.
Friends may visit at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, Ohio on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and on hour prior to services at the church.

Lois Jeanette Rush, 73, of Belpre, Ohio, died at Genesis Health Care in Zanesville, Ohio on Saturday, June 26, 2010.

She was born in Athens County, Ohio on September 22, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Olga Ramsey Croston.

She had worked for the Ohio Bell in Zanesville, Ohio the H. L. Rush Trucking Company, and retired from the OK Trucking Co. in Belpre, Ohio.
She was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church. She loved to play bingo at the Belpre Volunteer Fire Department, cook, and spend time with her family.

Survivors include her son, Gregory Rush of Plainfield, IL; two daughters, Joyce Stanley of Belpre, Ohio and Vicki Challenger of Olmsted Township, OH; two grandchildren, Traci (Brett) Wilson of Zanesville, and Vincent Challenger of Olmsted Township, OH; one great-grandson, Evan Michael Wilson of Zanesville; her brother, Kermit (Joanna) Croston of Dublin, Ohio; two sisters, Norma Mayle of Belpre, Ohio and Velma (Ken) Striblin of Brookpark, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold L. Rush in 2004; two brothers; and a sister.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Bethel Methodist Church, Bartlett, Ohio with Rev. Eugene Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery. Jeremiah Sullivan married Annie Croston Graham 2/5/1892, Boston, MA. I'm not sure whether he was married prior to this. I've been unable to find out any other information.

I did find Jeremiah Sullivan on the 1900 Boston Ward 9, Pg 1. 0f 29,
living at Union Park St./Place with
Annie Croston Graham
Emma Francis Graham (step-daughter)
James Graham (step-son)

Many thanks for your reply re. Croston.

My difficulty is........My grandfather was born John Roberts and he had a sister Mary Ellen.

Their father died and their mother remarried to a George Massie.

Mary married a Peter Carney and they had a son they called John. Peter Carney was dead by the time of the 1901 census and Mary Ellen remarried in 1905 to Robert Croston.

I have found three children born to Robert & Mary Ellen, Mary, Florence and George.

This is the only side of my family that I have not made contact with living decendents.

I have just found out my Edward (married 1870) father was Richard Croston, Edward married a Emma Howard, don't know if there is a link, but they are all from the Bootle/Liverpool/Walton on Hill area so there is a good chance there is a link. I will look at what I've got and see if I can find any info on your Robert (I know there are some Williams I've come across), actually my father's name was William Croston, so I wonder if the name came from a distant relative? I'll let you know how I go

I am searching for a Robert Croston born in the Liverpool/Bootle areas in 1871.

His parents were Mary and William. William came from Ireland and Mary from Scotland.

Their other children were:-

William, John, Thomas, George and Mary.

Robert married Mary Ellen Carney, nee Roberts and they had three children that I have found to date.

Fingers crossed that we may have a connection.

Margaret V. Stephens, 87, of Zanesville, Ohio, died 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Cedar Hill Care Center Zanesville, OH following a lengthy illness.

She was born Sunday, September 17, 1922 in Washington County, Ohio, the daughter of Charles Dewey and Clara (Norris) Croston. She was married on Sunday, February 10, 1946 to Shirley E. Stephens.

Mrs. Stephens was a former Home Healthcare Aid and also a member of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her sons, Terry L. (Charlene) Stephens of Nashport, Stephen Stephens, David Stephens; and a daughter, Shirley ("Willie") Hall all of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn (Gabe) Weatherspoon, Lillian Sherrod, Marilyn Mayle, and Juanita Croston all of Zanesville, and Louise Smith of Canton; a brother, James (Venus) Croston of Canton, Ohio.

Margaret was Preceded in death by her parents, Charles Dewey and Clara (Norris) Croston; her husband, Shirley E. Stephens; brothers, Loyd Croston, Wendell Croston, Fred Croston, David Croston, Robert "Bobby" Croston, and Roland Croston; and a sister, Mary Sowers.

Dale A. Kennedy, 91, of Zanesville, Ohio died Monday, June 1, 2009 at his residence.

He was born on June 19, 1917 in Amesville, Ohio to the late Grover and Roxie Croston Kennedy. He was a farmer, a coal miner, and retired from the Cooper Corporation in Zanesville. He was a member of the Bethel Wesleyan Church in Bartlett.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna Tate Kennedy of the Home; one brother, James Kennedy of Camp Springs, Maryland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Peggy Sue Kennedy; one brother, Robert Kennedy; three sisters, Ursula Grant, Dency Stevens, and Eileen Freeman.

Minnie Croston's mother was Sarah Caroline LARGENT not Edwards.
Sarah Largent was born 27 Sept. 1848. She was a daughter of William Largent (bc1786) and Elizabeth Ann EDWARDS (b 20 dec. 1812 in Cold Stream, Hampshire County, West Virginia.
Sarah's father died about 1848 and her mother remarried to James Kidwell on 18 July 1871 in Hampshire Co.
The family migrated to the Sherman County area of Nebraska between 1880 and 1887 when Elizabeth died.

THANKS! I found info on the children of Augusta & Sallie Ann and if I have all my facts correct the were my GGG Grandparents. I'm very curious about Sallie Ann & Augusta because my info going back stops there. My Grandma has very liitle information on Sallie Ann and I think allot of it is from what she was told as she was growing up. Then my second search is on my G Grandparents Resse Ray Kennedy & Evvie Mayle. I found several Resse Ray Kennedys but my Grandma tells me they were not the same person. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again. I have not been on this site in a VERY long time and I noticed that I have three user names on here and I don't think I signed on with the same one this time.

I do believe Herman was my Grandfathers brother. His name was William Zebedee Croston. I just got info on this and haven't had the time to review it. The two brothers married Nellie and Elsie Mayle, sisters. I remember hearing the name Roscoe. My dad, Orval, was born Sept 17 1917 in Grafton, so that fits the timeline. I have a tree in here you are welcome to look at. I just added Herman last week. Add to it if you can.

I'm not sure, I have a Charles but mine wasn't born til about 1877 his parents were Edward Croston (abt 1849) and Emma nee Howard (abt 1852). There were from Bootle, Lacashire, and most of mine are all from Liverpool area. I don't know if any of this fits into to your tree or not. Edward was born in "Walton on the Hill". Don't know if there is a link or not.

not sure if you have the following information.

Sarah was living with her parents and siblings at Drinking Houses, Back Lane, Croston in 1871.

You have 1881.

Sarah was still unmarried in 1891 living at Drinkhouses with widowed mother Ellen and siblings William, John, Margaret and Richard along with son Joseph.

I couldnt find Sarah in 1901. Joseph was living at Queen St, Poulton working as a harbour labourer.

However, on the lancashirebmd website a death is registerred in 1892 for Sarah Croston aged 38 living in the sub district of Croston.

As I couldnt find a marriage for Sarah Croston in that area of Lancashire I assume the above would be your great grandmother.

Hence there would be no known male ascendents for your grandfather.

Allen L. Croston, 66, of High Ave., Akron, Ohio died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at his home.

He was born March. 11, 1942 in Zanesville, a son of the late Roosevelt Croston and Anna Stevens Croston.

Mr. Croston was a retired operator for Gojo Industries in Cuyahoga Falls, and a U.S. Army veteran. He loved and enjoyed his family and helped everyone in the community.

He is survived by his cherished wife of 41 years, Almeda Mayle Croston of Akron; two sons, Kent A. Croston of Akron, Jeff (Kelly) Johnson of Zanesville, Ohio; two daughters, Kellie (Eric) Parker and Karmen Croston, both of Akron; one brother, Phillip Croston of McConnelsville, Ohio; one sister, Barbara Myers of Zanesville; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Ashten, Alexis, Jaymee, Jeremy, Miranda, Brandon, and Heather; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Kennard, Danny, and Mark Croston; and one sister, Frances Mayle.

Thank you for your quick response, Don! In the 1980s, I did a history of Sweetwater, Nebraska, and the Croston family figured prominently as they were one of the first families in the area. I'm working on the history again and trying to add more information.

I'm particularly interested in Thomas Hanson Croston(b. 1843) and his wife Sarah Caroline Largent (b. 1848) and their children (there were seven).

Thanks--Sure you're welcome to anything I have. I have a cousin, Chuck Croston, chuxton@msn.com, who has done extensive research, but in the meantime, is there anything specific you would like? I would like to forward your e-mail to him.
My Grandmother was Minnie Florence Croston nee Hansen.
Our branch, as far back as I have information, originated in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland with James Croston, b. 1782, --His wife Ann Bassett, and 4 children came to America in 1830. James may have come ahead. They eventually settled in Dubuque and Jones County, Iowa near the town of Cascade. My GGGrandfather Jonathan, eventually moved to Western Iowa in LeMars, where he and his wife Anna Maria Sennett are buried. Thanks for contacting me. The only information I have on their son James is that he was at home in 1850, and nothing more. I would like to fill in some of the blanks. James' brother Jonathan is my GGGrandfather.

David I believe we've written before, I have just got new information on the Croston's. Actually had it all a long and did not know who was who. I have a bible page from James Croston and Mary Levis but it also has his Father as James Croston and Ann Bassett from Brandon, Cork, Ireland. My Aunt had put Durris but it had a question mark before it. They ended up in Mt Morris NY and are of the same family as the Lyles. Wiiliam Wallace Lyle and his wife Margaret Adams. Can you help. I am trying to find the name of my Great Grandfather. My Grandfather Joseph Croston was born at Drinkhouses in Croston in 1873. In the 1881 census it shows him as a Grandson age 8 in the above dwelling. Head of house at that time was a Richard Croston Farmer age 54. Wife Ellen Croston 49. Sons, William 22, John 20, Richard 12 and Grandson Joseph (my Grandfather) 8 Daughters, Alice 28, Sarah 26, and Margaret 14 All sons and daughters are shown unmarried. I paid for a copy of Joseph’s birth certificate, it was a bit of a shock, it gave mother Sarah Croston but no father was listed. You can see from above Sarah must have been 17 or 18 when she became pregnant. Sarah may have married later and had other children, if you know this please let me know as a relation may have some info on this matter. I would really like to know before I die.

How far back do you go for the name Croston. I have a Samuel Croston Melling in my family line in UK. Does your link go there at all?

I'm sorry the name appears only once as a middle name in a Melling family that married into my mother's family in the 1880s. I have not trced any further back on this line, but have most names to the present time and it does not arise again that I am aware of, sorry.
Should you come accross any other links I would be most appreciative.

There was a suburd in Liverpool called Croston in the earlier days but do not know just how long ago at this time.

Elijah was born in 1852 in Hampshire Co., VA, married Almina in 1876 and died abt. 1903 in Philippi, Barbour Co., WV. Any information is appreciated.

Florence M Hill was in the State Industrial school at ten mile Harrison County. (She was 14 in 1900 Census)

She married an Addison Gearhart - Should have married around 1907 or so.

Trying to find out her Mother & Fathers Name. That marriage would have been Annie Tyree to Unk Hill around 1880
