Thanks for your quick reply. Family lore has it that Joshua Crouse was married to an native American woman. Ann Dickenson/Dickerson would appear to be Caucasian so I guess family lore was incorrect!

I believe my relatives were married in this area in the late 1800's. The groom would be Joshua Crouse and the bride would be Ann Dickenson. Are they on the list? thanks in advance.

All records should indicate he was born and from Fannettsburg, Pennsylvania. I have gone through the Department of the Navy and requested all records be corrected.

Pat,

When I found the family information in the pension file for Daniel Wood I thought I'd found a gold mine because how could anyone not be able to place the family with all this information given [at the time of the depositios]. It listed their approx. ages even the married names of Catherine's two sisters! One would think that someone would have been looking for one of her siblings by now and had posted their family.
I also have not been able to ID her or her siblings. I have info about a lot of Crouse's, but unfortunately some of the early ones are elusive.
Since she and her known siblings lived in St. Johnsville - maybe I'll stop by the Margaret Reany Library in St. Johnsville the next time I am in the area (soon after Easter) to see if they have any obits on them. I have not found them in local cemetery's either - I was hoping for a "family plot" kind of thing.

I am also looking for the identity of Catherine Crouse Wood who filed for Daniel's Rev. War Pension. I have been unable to ID her siblings, Jacob b. ca 1782, Gertrude b. ca 1770[married Best] possibly Jacob Best and Margaret b. ca 1768 living in Palatine Dist. in 1843 [married Clause/Clouse].

According to Catherine Crouse Wood at the time of her deposition [31 July 1848] she gave her age as 73 years and 297 days. If I calculated it right I convert that to her birthdate as being 8 Oct 1774. [that is if she actually knew her date of birth!] ... who is this person? .... HELP!

I would love to discuss this family with you.

ken

Andrew Crouse was my husband's third great grandfather. From what I can gather he was born in Baden, Germany and after coming to Philadelphia was a tobacconist, which he continued after going to Harrisburg. He bought 400 acres in Columbia Co., which is where he died and is buried on the farm. He was married twice and had a total of 12 children. I can't go back any farther than him. I hope this sheds some light to your post.

Crous, Crouse families in PA and Ohio late 1700's & 1800's

I am looking for more information on Jacob Crouse and wife Rebecca Reifsnyder of PA. They had sons Jonas H, Isaiah (my great great grandfather), Isaac, Benjamin that are all berried in a family cemetery in Ashland, OH. My great great grandfather Isaiah (born 1814 OH) married Duannah (Doanna) E Richards (born VA about 1816) in Ohio Dec 1835.

My grt-grt-grantparents had Emily Jane, William F, Jacob Burg, and Margaret Rebecca Crouse. Emily Jane Crouse married Isiah A Richards, son of William B Richards and Rosana Filner of OH.

There son Charles married Malinda B Widup (no relation to a Richards or Widup, I think ha ha).

Just makes me wonder if my Richards were related way back when...after all they did marry cousins.

Puzzled me^^^

Maybe some of this sounds familiar to anyone?

I am a descendent of Oliver Crouse 1777-1841. Used to live in Fulton,Oswego County, NY, now living in Arizona. Just starting family history, my great grandfather, Richard Allen Crouse and his wife Cindrella Harris Crouse are buried with my grandfather, Guy Crouse, in Mt. Adnah Cemetery, Fulton, NY. They came to USA from Ontario. My grandfather was either murdered or killed himself when my Father was a toddler, so we knew nothing of this side of the family. Want to know who Oliver's father was as he was born in US and then went to Canada. There are early Crouses in eastern NY that fought against the Indians.

It seems the Catherine, daughter of Leonard and Lany Klock Crouse, is not the one who married Daniel Wood.
The Pension application filed in respect to Leonard's Revolutionary War service by his son Leonard includes a letter written by a Catherine Wood attesting to her knowledge of the couple and the fact that her parents attended their wedding and that she traveled part of the way to the wedding before being left with a grandmother. If this is your Catherine Wood she is more likely a daughter of a close relative.

Is the Johan Jost Kraus b. 1/1/1756 known as Joseph? I had been unable to place a Joseph crouse b. 1/1/1756 in Canajoharie who then moved to Herkimer, Herkimer County, then to Canada for over 30 years, before returning to Genessee County, NY. He had a son named Joseph who filed a pension application based on his father's war service.
Re: John Jacob Crouse and Gertrude Helmer

Catherine Crouse b. 1774 married Daniel Wood on 5/24/1792 in her father's home by John Henry Dyslin. Daniel died 10/3/1843 in Moravia, Cayuga Co. and Catherine died 12/3/1848 in St. Johnsville, NY.

He was in the Revolutionary War, a surgeon. He applied for a pension after the war and Catherine applied for a pension after his death. The pension papers include letters of testimony from her sister Margaret Cause, her sister Gertrude Best, and her brother Jacob Crouse. All attest to the fact that her maiden name was Crouse and to the date and details of their wedding.

They raised a family of children, but the only one is named in the pension papers is Clarissa Wood Berry, wife of James Berry. Her husband, James Berry was the administrator of David Wood's estate.

David wood is from Warwick, Orange Co., NY (born 1751) after the war he moved to Montgomery Co. and lived there about 14 years when he moved to the town of Semipronius, Cayuga Co. (land bounty). Eventually he returned to Orange Co. He may have been visiting Moravia, Cayuga Co., when he died.

All the information is from the 72 pages of their Pension applications.
I am searching for information on Ida M. Crouse, born in Iowa in 1883 to James Henry Crouse and Ella Ferguson. In the 1900 census she lived with her parents, sister Maude Ella Crouse and brother William Raymond Crouse in Junction Township, Greene County, Iowa. After that I have lost her. Can anyone help?

Re: History of the Crouse Family of Pennsylvania and Ohio

I am researching my grandmother, Dorothy Crouse, I know she was born about 1915 and lived in North West Ohio in 1929-30 when she had my Dad in 1930;he was born in Toledo, Oh.
I can only go by census that show she could have been the daughter of George and Ethel Crouse.
