Classification: Query
Avidly searching for my Crow(e) ancestors for a number of years, I took a break for a few years as I was becoming obsessed and frustrated beyond words. Recently, I took up the search again, hoping others out there have come up with anything new during my self-imposed break. Here is where I am:
Eliza Jane Crow m. Franklin Sherman Hall (my g-grandparents)
Benjamin Franklin Crow m. Nancy Anna Strange (g-g-")
Mansfield Crow b. 1802 m. Mary A. Price (g-g-g- ")
John Crow m. Martha Bybee (g-g-g-g-")
Daniel Crow ? (g-g-g-g-g-")
John + Martha Bybee and John's father Daniel are recent, but unconfirmed additions; I don't know where my source got his info as yet. To make matters worse, there is the suggestion that:
a)John crow had a brother named Mansfield as well;
b) Garrard Cty, KY marriage bonds indicate a Mansfield Crow married a Lena Green (daughter of Zachariah) in 1801;
c)a John Crow married Anny Green (daughter of Zachariah) in 1806
d)a Mansfield Crow (father John) married Polly Higdon or Rigdon in 1821.
I have concentrated on the name Mansfield primarily because it is comparatively uncommon. The first indication of a Mansfield is back in Baltimore, MD., in 1742. He was the son of John Crow and Judith Magee. Near as I can tell, the whole Crow clan moved to North Carolina with old John outliving at least two wives and producing many more children. The next time the name Mansfield crops up is in Tennessee as a volunteer for the TN militia during the war of 1812. After that, the name surfaces in Garrard County, KY. I have been operating on the theory (mine) that my line of Crows made their way from NC, through TN, into KY. The names Mansfield,Reuben and John Crow show up in the 2nd census of KY in 1800 (Garrard County)but, by 1830, only a Mansfield is listed. There are indications of a John and Reuben in Indiana, suggesting that the great Crow migration continued to other states all during the 1800's. If anyone has anything to offer, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks,
Joe
