Looking for information on Joshua Crowell born about 1782.

He married Sally Buck Payne (her second marriage). There is a pre-nuptial agreement dated 17 Jul 1849, and they are married on the 1850 census, and appear in the 1860 census. I can't find either one on the 1870 census, Sally is a widow on the 1880 census.

The only other record I can find is Sally and Joshua selling land to John, Thomas, and David Crowell on 17 Dec 1858. Does anyone recognize this Joshua Crowell?

Re: Death of Mr. A. Russell Crowell in Mexico

This is Alvah Russell Crowell, my dad's great uncle (the brother of my great-grandfather). Russell was the son of Jabez Howes Crowell (1826-1919) and Rebecca A. Holway (1819-1898) who were married 1847 in Sandwich, Mass. Russell was born 1862 in New Bedford, Mass., he married Ella Somerville in 1889 and they had three children: Vera Helen, Russell B., and Ramon David. Russell B. (known as Bee) and Ramon (known as Babe) were great friends of my grandfather's; they lived in Santa Cruz, Calif., and together took many fishing trips to Mexico. I believe all three had children but we've lost touch with these cousins who moved to the midwest.

We had the death date of Alvah Russell Crowell but I wasn't aware he had died in Mexico. Interesting!

AECrowell
Reno, Nevada

Richard, I just posted a reply to another of your queries, before I saw this one specifically about the DNA study! I had not checked this bulletin board recently.

My father is one of your 2 matches - but his 12 markers differ from yours and our other match's by 1 of 12. However, when my dad and the other match expanded to the 25 marker study (which costs $35 additional), we found they matched exactly in the expanded markers. This means they are only off by 1 of 25 which is considered a match (I think!). I'm hoping you will consider expanding to the 25 markers. It would be very interesting to see if we all match! If so, this means your family name began as CROW and began to be spelled CROWELL in Massachusetts soon after arriving. You might want to join the CROWE DNA study at Family Tree DNA in addition to our study - it's very easy to join a second study.

Earlier I'd written that I thought your Aaron Crowell of Medford belonged to a separate group of Crowells in Massachusetts - apparently not so!

Andrea Crowell

Can you tell us what you know of these four brothers? When did they come to America?

I believe the Aaron Crowell you mention (b. 12-13-1744 in Medford, MA) had at least the sons Robert, Joseph, and John M. Is this your family? Some of this was recorded in the LDS church's IGI, not always a completely reliable source.

I hope you can give us more information about this family.

Crowell DNA Testing

Sure, anybody can do the test. I can order a kit for you, or the administrator for the Crow/Crowell DNA project can order a kit for you. You have to ask to be in the group. I believe that the 37 marker test is $199 US now, but I will have to check. I am the administrator for the Mustard family project, but could order a kit for you.

They have reduced the cost substantially, so I am not sure of the cost as of this moment.

Look up wwww.familytreeDNA.com, then the Crowell project, and ask to join it. There are numerous types of tests. Bare minimum is 25 marker test. but they also have the ftDNA test for females. The male member of the family is the only one that can be traced, as they have the Y chromosome, which is passed from father to son. All the females can do is go back to one of the daughters of Eve, but no family linkage.

Where are you in Canada?. My Scottish ggg grandfather settled in Huron, Ontario, and helped found the town of Brucefield, along with cousins and brothers.

Eventually he came to Dickinson County, Kansas, and my grandfather ended up moving to Grays Harbor County, Washington. I have many relatives in Canada, from Nova Scotia to BC.

John DM

Hello Andrea;

I am the one that had Riche Crowell take the DNA test. You stated that he should expand the test. He had the 37 marker test done initially.

My mother-in-law is Mary Juanita Crowell, and until the test always said that they were Cherokee Indian. Apparently now it appears that was true only on the Grandmother Laura Deaton's side, and even that is questionable to me, as some Deaton family claim English heritage. They may have had several Cherokee Grandmothers, for all I know.

That is the thing about DNA that is surprising. My father-in-law's family always said that they were Irish, but DNA proves that they were Native American. The Irish came about from the 1835 special Bevil, Texas census. At that time the Governor of Texas, Lamar was running all the Indians out of Texas, and since they had a grandmother of Irish ancestry, they claimed that so that they would not be forced to leave. One cousin says that her GG Grandmothers family bible showed that she was Cherokee, but another cousin, her sister, destroyed the bible, so there is no way to check now.

I am the one doing the Genealogy for my family, and my wife's, so if you want what I have for lineage, I will send it to you in "book" form or GEDCOM. The GEDCOM would have to be sent to you on a CD, as I have around 20,000 names on it, and most servers will not handle it.

I will need your private e-mail address to send the data to you, as this Ancestry.com link will not accept it.

My e-mail is b767capt@mustard.net

John D Mustard
1545 Cumberland Road
Tyler, TX. 75703
903-509-2507

I found it. James Canty Crowell's first wife is buried in the crews cemetery. I checked the list and found his second wife too.

Crowell,	Maddie W. Meriwether
April 29, 1865	June 29, 1885
Wife of J.C. Crowell
(note: Second wife)

So, whose daughter is she? I found William Lucius Meriwether in the 1880 census living in Bullock Co. with a daughter M. W. age 15. Likely this is Maddie.

1880 US Census Alabama Bullock Co	Greenwood	154

Merriwether	W. L.	head	M	M	W	55 farmer AL	VA	VA
Merriwether	M. On the same date of the marriage of J.C. Crowell and M. W. Meriwether I find that his brother Thomas Crowell married Minna T. Meriwether, older 1/2 sister to Maddie. They also married in Columbus. It would seem likely that a double wedding occurred. But if so, why was only one marriage listed in the paper?
Eufaula Times and News (Eufaula, Alabama)
November 7, 1882

Mr. J. C. Crowell and Miss M. W. Merriwether, both of Bullock Co. (Ala.) were married recently in Columbus.

Note: Can anyone identify this couple? If he is James C. Crowell then he married a Meriwether the second time too. His first wife Clara Fitzpatrick Meriwether died in 1880.
