OLD CROWELL CABINET CARD PHOTO FOUND

I have recently purchased/rescued two old cabinet card photos of a young woman. She is identified on the back of these cards as Gertrude Crowell. I suspect she is is 17-25 years of age in both pictures, and my guess would be the photos were taken @ 1890's--1910. On the front of one of the photos is the imprint/location of the photographer, which is English Photographers in South Dayton (Cattaraugus County), NY. Both photos are in excellent condition: no damage or fading. I try to rescue old identified cabinet card photos. So, if Gertrude Crowell is yours or you are interested in these photos, please contact me at: jmje36@aol.com

David B. Crowell, husband of Charlotte Munn

They married 7 Jul 1839 Fountain County, Indiana; however settled and remained in Philadelphia, PA for most of their lives. David was apparently born in New Jersey and was a watch maker/watch case maker. I believe they had at least one child, Mary B. Crowell, b. Abt. 1850. Hoping to find more info on descendants and on this couple. Charlotte was most likely a sister to my gr gr grandfather. Presumably, she was the dau. of Jesse and Harriet (Reed) Munn of Brighton, England, and later New York City. On the 1880 Phila Census, she is listed as what appears to be a "doctor of medicine?". That would make her rather interesting! Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated!
Lisa

However, I only have unsourced information that Betsey's parents were Abner Crowell and Tabitha Kelley (of Yarmouth?). Can anyone confirm?

August 17, 2007 Crowell Family Reunion In Portland, Oregon

Hello, Crowell's! The last Crowell Reunion we had was August 2003 in Detroit/Southfield, Michigan at my home: William & Donna Crowell-Greene.

This year, it is being held in Portland, Oregon on August 17 and 18, and being given by Cedric Crowell and his children. Since the 2003 Reunion, Cedric has lost his wife and a daughter-both unexpectedly and suddenly. Please-any Crowell's out there wanting to meet other Crowell's, or wanting to find out whether or not they are related to the gr-gr-gr-gdchildren of John Crowell of Ireland and his slave Emily "Crowell", and their son James Crowell and his wife Vina/Vinie Crowell, who have a Pickens County, Alabama, West Point, Miss, and even a Carolina connection, please come and share your information and lineage. The few historians in the family are of age, and our memories and lifespan are getting shorter. Come, if you're interested in sharing info, while we can still remember some details of our history and lineage. Bring photos to share. Bring your family members.

If you'd like to contact Cedric Crowell directly regarding the Reunion, he can be reached at: 503/287-5963. He usually answers his phone by saying, "Yeah!" I'm trying to retrain him to say, "Hello." (Smile) But, when you're in your 70s, it's kind of hard to teach an old boy new tricks. But, he's a sweetheart! Do give him a call, or you can reach me at: Donna E. Crowell-Greene, 248.357-1005. I am located in the Detroit, Michigan-area. My email address is: degreene@sbcglobal.net.

Please, when you do call, if you ask for Donna Crowel-Greene, kindly identify yourself as a Crowell early in the conversation, so I don't think you're a telemarketer.

Hope to see some new Crowell's in Portland, OR.
I have rescued two old cabinet card photos of a young woman named Gertrude Crowell of Dayton NY. These photos probably taken 1890-1910. Gertrude appears to be 20-30 years of age. One photo was taken by English (Photographers) of Dayton, NY. The other photo has no location imprinted on the card. However, the name of Gertrude Crowell is on the back side of the card of each photo.

I try to save old identified photos when I find them and return them to their family. I do not have scanning ability. If Gertrude is your family, or you are interested in these photos, please contact me privately at e-mail address below.

Thank you, Judy in TX (jmje36@aol.com)

POW/MIA Korean War, CROWELL

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Baltimore County, Maryland as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: LEROY CROWELL
Born: November 5, 1928, Black
Date of loss: December 1, 1950, Missing in Action (MIA)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Crowell family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Matthew D. Lalla

Looking for any information on ancestors of Matthew D. Lalla, my father. His father was John James Lalla married to Marie (Mary) Chebance and had one sister Bernadine. Bernadine is still alive, but as tight lipped about the family history as he was. Only thing i do know is that Matthew's name was once DiLella. I have 2 half sisters, Jaqualine and Eleanor (deceased) whose legal names were Dilella and a half brother John Daniel Lalla. They are from Matthew's first wife (I think!), Vivian Daigle Lalla. My mother's name was Merle Crowell Lalla. Matthew was a traveling salesman for Stratton Baldwin Hardware Co. of New Orleans way back in at least the 40's. If anyone has any information about this illusive history please email me at whitegold70043@yahoo.com.

OLD CROWELL CABINET CARD PHOTOS FOUND IN TEXAS

Dear List,

I have just purchased two old cabinet card photos of a young woman named Gertrude Crowell. Both are identified on the back of the card. Both photos are oval shaped on the rectangle "card" backing. One of the photos also has the photographer's name and address imprinted on the card. it says "English (photographer), South Dayton, NY".

I try to rescue and return old identified photos. There are normally very few photos that have ID on them. However, in this group, there were many that were identified, and a number of other surnames. I have no idea how these families connect, but some of the additional surnames were Pitts, Crons/Croins, Fox, Sthulmer/Shuhlmelr, Bessenger, and others. Many of them were located in the area of Buffalo & Springville, NY (Erie Co.), some from St. Louis., etc.

So, if you think you connect to any of these persons, I will be glad to look through the photos that I have. There are numerous Pitts photos, and they are identified. I do have 3/4 unidentified photos that I am trying to match up with some of the people in the identified photos. Please contact me privately at: jmje36@aol.com

Thank you, Judy in TX

One of the sons was my great grandfather Roy Rhoden Crowell.
Roy and his brother Robert were raised under the surname Griffin in Bellingham Washington. Charlotte had re-married to Hiram O. Griffin in 1905.
She was also married to a George Maloy from 1989 to ? They lived in Burrard district Vancouver B.C. during the 1901 Canada census.
What I would like to know is what happened to John Crowell? Any history regarding him would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Russ

I have a problem I need some help with. I'm trying to zero in on a Van Crowell.
One researcher says that he was born in1854 and died in 1860, this information is said to have come from a family bible. Another researcher says he died in 1915 in Illinios. the Van who lived till 1915 had a wife, Mary, who died in 1922 in ILL. Both researchers show Van with the same parents, James V. and Jane(Davis) Crowell
Doesn't anyone know how I could get an obit or death certificate for the Van who died in 1915.

Gene Parker
parkerel@hotmail.com

Revolutionary War Property Confiscations
One of the ugliest things about Revolution is that it pits brother against brother. The victors, of course, get to write the histories. But the Revolution, far from being the sanitized “British vs. Americans” conflict taught in our schools, also pitted Americans against other Americans.

A list of the names of all those Persons whose property was Confiscated in the Several Counties of the State of New Jersey, for joining the Army of the King of Great Britain &c. as returned to the Auditors Office, previous to the first day of May 1787.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information, which comes from a webpage titled "Property Confiscations, Monmouth County." The link for the site is listed below.

Joyce

http://www.horsethief.info/newjersey/property.htm#Top

I am looking for information on the Crowells from Van Zandt County, Texas. My grandfather was Ray Riley Crowell born abt 1913 in TN. I believe his father was John A Crowell born abt 1893 in TN. They lived in Van Zandt where the rest of Ray's siblings were born. They were Louis 1916, James 1918, Forne 1920, Jame 1925 & Miron or Miram 1925. The mother was Maggie Crowell (do not know maiden name) born abt 1893. Does anyone have any info on them or is anyone also related to them directly? I was adopted at the age of 3 and I just recently found my biological family which is the family I'm looking for info on.

CROWELL: N.C. Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, FAMILY TREE DNA STUDY

I want to encourage all my Crowell cousins to find their OLDEST Crowell MALE and have them do the Family Tree DNA Study, Especially if the census shows them as a Stapleton surname. We probably only need one or two more from the Stapleton name census. My dad is from from one of those lineage's and his DNA proves that we are from the German Crowell lineage verses the English lineage.
I have the database for our Crowell Family & can assist all of the younger generations to take over our family history that are interested. Let's not let all the hard work that Joyce Parker Hervey, the book Just Folks & Judith Jo's work, and my dad and I's research work go to waste.
Best regards
Carol Crowell Hurley
bunnie4059@aol.com or carolhurley2@aol.com
I may have Crowell Info for you

In 1900, a group of Crowells and Crowell descendants attempted to claim money left in England by a brother or brothers of Oliver Cromwell. These brothers had escaped England and changed their name to Crowell. My great grandfather, Edward Foskit of Warren Massachusetts, whose uncle was a Crowell, left newspaper clippings and many letters from Crowells, who list their ancestors in an attempt to prove themselves heirs. The letters are handwritten, and sometimes hard to read, but if this rings a bell with anyone and you want to send me names and dates to look up in the letters, I will try to do so.

Cynthia Loring MacBain
macbain@linkny.com

Crowells in Nova Scotia

Hello List;

I am just starting out on this line. It starts out with the Hopkins in Massachusetts and comes to Barrington, Nova Scotia with the Port Roseway planters, the Nickersons and the Crowells. I very much doubt that it can be proven as there is a major problem with birth and marriage certificates in Nova Scotia during the vital time period but it will be fun trying. If anyone has any information, comments, pointers or general advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the skeleton of what I have at present:

Descendants of Stephen Hopkins

1 Stephen Hopkins

. +Mary

.. 2 Constance Hopkins

.. +Nicholas Snow

... 3 Mark Snow

... +Anna Cooke

.... 4 Anna Snow

.... +Eldad Atwood

..... 5 Anna Atwood

..... +William Nickerson m: 24 October 1717

...... 6 Rhoda Nickerson b: 1750 d: 19 July 1832

...... +Jonathan Crowell b:1 May 1746 m:28 April 1769 d:7 December 1815

....... 7 Rose Crowell

....... +Nathaniel Travis

........ 8 Tamar Travis b: 1782 d: 13 June 1861 m: January 1808

........ +Charles Sutherland b: 13 February 1786 d: 12 January 1853

......... 9 Abigail Sutherland b: 18 December 1824 d: 17 August 1879

......... +Duncan Johnson b:6 August 1819 m:17 April 1848 d:25 May 1910
Sheriff David A. CROWELL/Ida DANIEL – Perry Co, TN

Looking for information/connections on the families and ancestors of David A. (possibly Andrew) CROWELL and Ida M. DANIEL, his wife.

Parents of both David and Ida were born in Tennessee; David's mother may have been the widowed M. Crowell (Mittie?) listed in the 1880 Perry Co. Census.

David (born 25 August 1872) and Ida (born February 1874) were married in Perry Co. on 26 July 1891.

They were the parents of Opal A. (CROWELL) HUBSCHER, wife of Richard Max "Pappy" Hubscher.

It is said that David was a Sheriff in Perry County at the time of his death (post-1900 census; can't find him in 1910) and died in the line of duty...evidently, he was called to settle a disturbance in town and was shot in the back.

He raised hounds as a sideline, and was evidently a Mason, as his headstone in Danielsburg Cemetery at Tom's Creek, Perry Co., TN is said to have a Masonic symbol on it.

His murder would seem to be an IMPORTANT story of the day, but I am unsure how to proceed, newspaper-wise (obits, lead stories), or what have you. The local papers for that time frame do not appear at the Nashville Archives, and may no longer exist...

The Crowells had several children; as of 1900, 5 of 7 born are still living. One female, listed in the census, was not yet named. Known names, per family and 1900 census, are: M. Alicia; Mildred M.; Grace M.; Velmer (Velma?); Opal A.; Catherine; Elizabeth. The 3-year-old son of Ida and David (appears to be David, Jr.) is buried in Danielsburg Cemetery, as well.

Ida evidently left Perry Co., moving to the DC area, where she eventually remarried. Some of the daughters ended up in foster care after David's death.

Your help is appreciated. Thanks!

Bill Hubscher
bill@carletonpr.com
hubscher@hiwaay.net
Seeking information on Thomas Kelly and John Crowell. Thomas Kelly came to Colorado with withJohn Crowell and Charles Gregory from Pennsylvania sometime between 1880 and 1900. They settled in Leadville where the engaged in mining. Later Thomas Kelly and John CrowellJr (his nephew) struck out on their own. They ended up in Gilman and are shown on the 1920 census.

John Crowell shows up on 1930 census at Precint 10, Lake County. I cannot find Thomas Kelly so I assume he died between 1920-30.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with connections to these folks. Also, how do I go about getting death records in Colorado between 1920-30? Thanks.
Jerry

She was my father's cousin and was born November 2, 1915, possibly in Barrington, Nova Scotia - or maybe somewhere in the States. She served in the 2nd World War in the Navy, had a degree in teaching and married Dr. Phillip Mark. I believe they lived in California and may have one son.
