This was posted so long ago, but I'll give it a go anyway, because you can (hopefully) answer my question!

I am looking for information regarding Bernard E. Crowl. (Specifically, Bernard E. Crowl who was the first husband of Helen Jane Upole.)

So far I've only been able to find 2 obituaries mentioning a Bernard Crowl of Baltimore, but I don't know if this is the same person. I'll post them both below. Definitely sounds like these are your relatives, but is the Bernard in the obits the same Bernard that was married to Helen?

Crowl, G.R. “Hambone”?
Mr. Gerald R. “Hambone” Crowl, 61, of 1151 Riverside Avenue, Baltimore, a former resident of Brunswick, and a son of Edward R. and the late Emma Russell Crowl, died Thrusday, Oct. 4, at South Baltimore General Hospital.
Surviving him besides his father are his two sons, Hallis and Melvin Crowl, both of Baltimore; two brothers, Bernard E. and Irvin J. Crowl, both of Baltimore; and two grandchildren. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles in Brunswick.
Friends may call at the James L. McCully Funeral Home, 130 East Fort Avenue, Baltimore, and services will be held from the funeral home on Monday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
The Frederick Post, October 8, 1973

Crowl, Paul R.
Paul Russell Crowl, 19 years of age, formerly of Brunswick, died at the South Baltimore General hospital Wednesday morning about 12:30 o’clock of pneumonia. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Crowl, and was married about four weeks ago. Besides his wife and parents he is survived by three brothers, Irvin Crowl, Marine Corps, and Bernard and Gerald Crowl, Baltimore. The family removed to Baltimore from Brunswick some years ago. The body was taken to Brunswick Wednesday and removed to the home of his grandmother from where the funeral will take place Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with services by Rev. Mr. Littleton of Baltimore. Interment will be made in the Park Heights cemetery. C. H. Feete and Son, Funeral directors.
Frederick News Post, October 11, 1934

I know that Bernard & Helen had a son named Paul, and I thought possibly they named him after this brother who had died, but I don't know for sure. Any help from anybody would be greatly appreciated!

Crowl of Riley, KS pictures (William, Maude, Ida)

Attached are pictures from an estate sale in KY. The owner said they were not her family but assumed they were friends of her grandmother's from Riley, KS. She was correct about Riley, Kansas...they were found on the census records.

The group photo says on the back:

Mr. and Mrs. Willam Crowl and Maude AND Maude Wilkening died July 24, 1952 (?) in Salem, Oregon

The photo of the girl says:

Maude Crowl Wilkening

These people can be found on Riley Co. KS census records in 1910 and 1920. Maude Crowl Wilkening's parents were William Crowl and Ida Crowl.

Anna's father was Willim H. Crowl and yes he married Sarsh Berryhill. George Carter Peck was pastor at many churches, but no military posts. The watch he was given was a gift from a group that called themselves "the Union soldiers" and probably referred to "their" service in the Army, not Rev G C Peck's.

The Historical Society there in Berkeley
County would be a good resource as would Gail Komar's Crowl Connections.

I keep intending to get back into genealogy, but so far,
haven't managed to put any time into it.
Re: Crowl Family

I'm a descendant of a line from this Crowl family. Your great great grandmother Maria's brother James Franklin Crowl (born around 1827, death unknown)is my great great grandfather. He moved with another sister, Cornelia Crowl Hussy, to Oregon and married Julia A. Shortridge. They had eight children in Oregon before moving back to Illinois. I believe more children were born there. The family moved on to Missouri at some point. James Franklin's son Upton Crowl (1859-1938) ended up being a fairly large landholder in the Custer Co./Butler area of Oklahoma. His daughter Faith Elizabeth Crowl Stigleman, my grandmother moved with her husband and two kids from Oklahoma to Oregon during the dust bowl era.

The names of our great great great grandfather's other children are: Mordecai(b.1820), Upton (1822-1872), Cornelia Hussy (b. 1823), Mary E. Ross (b.1825), Joseph F. and Jacob J.(b. 1827), Robert F. (1829-1843), Miranda Darnall Taylor (b. 1831),Van Bassett (b. 1836), Vinton (838-1852), Helen Morris (b. 1840), and William H. (b. 1845).

I gleaned this information from a biograph in EARLY SETTLERS OF SANGAMON COUNTY - 1876 by John Carroll Power. I found at least one error in it, their may be more.

Re: Crowls from Oklahoma

I realize I'm replying to a very old post. I'm a descendant of Oklahoma Crowls. My Grandmother was born Faith Elizabeth Crowl, daughter of Upton (1858-1938) and Sarah Shively Crowl (1863-1930) of Butler, OK. Upton died at age 79. His obituary said he was born to Franklin Crowl near Portland, Oregon. (I also have family notes which say Upton's parents were named James and Julie) His family moved to Illinois in his early boyhood. He moved with his family to Missouri where he met and wed Elizabeth Shively on 10-19-1887. Sarah died in 1930. They had eight children, two of which, Ralph and Chester, died in infancy. A son Stephen was killed in action in WWI. When he died the remaining children were, Dale (1890-1947) and Karl Crowl (1902-1964) of Butler, OK, Faith Stigleman (1906-1966) of Junction City, OR, Nannie Valentine of of Custer, OK, and Ruth Hiller of Guyman, OK. He was also survived by three sisters, Mollie Pope of Nashville, Missouri, Nettie Williams of El Paso , IL and Nora Crowl of Rocky Ford, CO. He also was survived by a brother Joseph Franklin (Frank)Crowl (1875-1958) of Rocky Ford, CO.

Generally,
my Crowl's were in and about Shepherdstown, WV, and prior to that I believe, in PA. Currently, I only have some info
on them back to Peter Crowl who lived in Falling Waters, VA
in the early 1800's. Should I come across any info on Rena
I will absolutely let you know.
I am seeking information about a great great grandfather, Benjamin Crowl, born in Virginia about 1814 (1850 Census under "Crowd") who farmed in the LaPorte County, Indiana area perhaps as early as 1840. He married Martha J. (1822-1896) who was born in Indiana. Children included Henry Harrison, John Franklin, James Oliver, and Millie J. Benjamin may have died between 1860-1870 as I find no census reference after 1860.
