DNA Project

I am running a worldwide DNA Project which is investigating the surnames CRUCE, CRUSE, CRUISE, CREWS, CREWES, CRUWYS, etc. We currently have 29 participants from six different countries (England, France, Australia, Canada, America and Thailand). We are already discovering that the present-day surname is not necessarily a predictor of the genetic match. We have CREWES matching CRUWYS, and CREWS matching CRUSE. Anyone with any of the many variant surnames is invited to participate in the project and join us on our voyage of discovery. For further information please visit our project website:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/CruwysDNA

or see my profile page on the Guild of One-Name Studies website:

http://www.one-name.org/members/profiles/maintenance.html

Debbie Kennett
England

CRUCE Family Kentucky/Tennessee/Mississippi/Texas

After years of research I have put together a tentative family group for my ancestor, Lemuel Washington Cruce, and his wife Malinda Jones. I welcome any comments, suggestions, objections, corrobations, etc. Note that the name is spelled also "Cruse," "Cruise," "Cruice," and even "Crews" in sundry records.

Lemuel Cruce was born about 1812 in Kentucky, probably Livingston County, a son of Stephen S. Cruce and Nancy Duff. He was orphaned at an early age. By 1 October 1833 he was in Hardeman County, Tennessee, where he married Malinda Jones, who was born in 1815 in Tennessee; she was a daughter of Jesse R. Jones and Hannah Pomeroy Killough. Lemuel died in 1847 in Marshall County, Mississippi, after which his widow took their 7 small children to Houston County, Texas. All of this is documented in various records and is mentioned in the book on the Killough clan by Zora Cunningham.

It is not known when Malinda Jones Cruce died, except she disappears from the records after 1850. After moving to Texas she remarried one John Blair in 1849. She may be the "Olive Blair" who died in 1860 in Houston County, Texas.

Lemuel and Malinda had the following 7 children:

1. Sarah Ann E. Cruce, b. 1836 in Tennessee, died 1872 in Crockett, Houston County, Texas. Married 1st to Anson James Kyle, 2nd to Frederic Stuart.

2. Stephen Jesse Cruce, b. 1837 in Tennessee, died 1910 in Hill County, Texas. Married Martha Ellen Bobbitt.

3. William J. Cruce, born 1839 in Mississippi (probably Marshall County), died after 1860. No further information.

4. John Killough Cruce, b. 1841 in Mississippi, probably died in 1862 in New Mexico at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. (The records list a "J. K. Cruce" fatality in that battle.)

5. Hannah C. Cruce, b. 1843 in Mississippi, died after 1880, probably was the wife of James M. Hatton of Henderson County, Texas.

6. Nancy Jane Cruce, b. 1845 in Mississippi, died 1921 in Yakima County, Washington. Married 1st Robert L. Bishop, 2nd James S. Morris. Traveled to Washington from Texas around 1899.

7. Mary M. Cruce, b. 1846 in Mississippi, died before 1880, probably married Martin Luther Hallmark of Houston County, Texas. (The Hallmark family records list her surname as "Crews.")

Richard Cruce was born around 1735. So any information anyone could give about this Isaac Newton Cruce would be greatly appreciated. I would especially like to know who his wife was and who his parents, grandparents, etc., were.

Lindsay Brown

James Cruce was my great great grandfather. We began using the Cruse spelling after my grandfather (Allison Cruce) and grandmother (Louise Anita Sedotal) were married. Their wedding certificate uses the Cruce spelling, but my father and all his older siblings were brought up using the Cruse spelling.

I am willing to share information with anyone interested.

Debbie Soiett

Margaret Cruce/Cross/Crause b 1800 VA Amanda Cross b 1824 KY

I am trying to locate information on Margaret b 1800 VA who married unk Cruce/Cross/Crause. Daughter Amanda Cross b 1824 KY, unknown location. Amanda Cross married Alfred Gadberry 1843, Daviess County, Indiana. Another possible daughter is Dolly Cross b VA. Does anyone have a book that might show a marriage of a Margaret to a Cruce? Any Amanda or Dolly Cross listed as children? Margaret's last name is listed differently on every census. The family ended up in Daviess County, Indiana by 1843, but can't be located on the 1840 census there. It is thought that the unk Cruce husband may have died by 1850 as Margaret is listed as living with her daughter Amanda Gadberry in Putnam County, Indiana on the 1850 census. Thank you for any help.

CRUCE family in TX

About 1849 a man named Lemuel Washington CRUCE died in Anderson County, TX, leaving a widow -- Malinda JONES CRUCE -- and her 7 children: Sarah, Stephen, William, John K., Hannah C., Nancy J., and Mary M. The widow, Malinda, married a man named John BLAIR on 15 November 1849, also in Anderson County, TX.

Malinda, born 1815 in KY, was a daughter of Jesse JONES and Hannah Pomeroy KILLOUGH, early settlers in Houston County, TX.

By 1850, the BLAIR family was living in Houston County, TX. The children are all listed, but their surname (CRUCE) is not -- so some researchers have listed them all, in error, as BLAIR children. By the 1860 census this family seems to have disappeared, except for a Riley BLAIR in Houston County living with a young couple -- Robert EARLS and his wife Nancy J.

I know what happened to Sarah (she married James KYLE). I know that Stephen J. (the "J" stands for Jesse) married Martha Ellen Bobbitt and died in Hill County, TX in 1910. What about the other children? I had thought that my Nancy J. CRUSE (my gr-grandmother) who married Robert BISHOP was the same as this Nancy J. CRUCE; but the Nancy J. EARLS in the 1860 census seems to plug up that theory.

If anyone can shed any light on this problem, I would be ever so grateful.

Nancy Shire
Oro Valley, AZ

James Cruce in Copiah County, Ms

I found a mention of James Cruce in the 1860 census for Copiah County, Ms. Does anyone have infomation on James Cruce in Ms.? The reason I am interested is that my greatgrandfather was a James Cruce b. abt. 1857. My great grandmother's parents were married in Copiah, Ms. in 1860 (Belphore Carlin Noemie Provost), they were born in Louisiana. James Cruce married Amiee Edmonia Carlin m?. They were in Louisian in 1880 in the St. Mary Parish Census. James was 23. I also found James Cruce in 1870 census index for St. Mary Parish and Orleans Parish. He would have been about 13 in 1870. I haven't viewed the census records yet, but I will as soon as I can find the time. If you think you can help, please contact me.

Debbie Soiett
debsoiett@yahoo.com
