Hi, I purchased a photo of Louis at a local antique store 1926 in Oregon. He is the son of William Cruikshank and Judith Irving. He married Mary Louise Beck.

If you would like the original photo, I am NOT related and am trying to get the photograph to someone who is related and would want it. I am not trying to make a profit and just ask that you reimburse the $1 I spent and shipping costs. If you are interested, just let me know! :)Jessica

Re: Andrew Cruikshank 1750 & Andrew Jr 1785

Hi Susan,
I have no proof Andrew was born in Ireland and came over to America except what History of Butler County wrote--"Andrew Cruikshank was one of the next arrivals. He was a Scotch-Irishman who emigrated to this country previous to the Revolutionary War." Andrew Sr. was my gggg-grandfather. In fact all references to him says he's from Ireland. We have just accepted that as fact. I did write to someone several years ago in Aberdeenshire who said his Andrew never left Scotland, so I scratched that off as a source.

Now I understand that there is a link through Adam and Jean Cruikshank, but I personally can't find it. From my research, many Scotmen ware forced to immigrate (from Wigtownshire) to Ireland to boost the prostatent community during the Jacobite times, but that I believe was in the 1600s. Then, in the late 1700s, many of the families from Scotland were forced out of Ireland, many going to America. The connections in Ireland to the Crookshanks (which is how Andrew wrote his name) can be found in Kirkmaiden, Portpatrick, Stoneykirk and Stranraer.

I hope this help a bit, as I would love to make a definite commection to Ireland.
Your cousin?
Marsha Davis

He leaves her his house, personal effects, etc. I'm curious who she was, and was wondering if anyone has a woman in their family line whose name or nickname, might have been "Icie" Lee Cruikshank? Will be happy to share info with anyone who may be related to this woman. Would love to solve this mystery!
Betty

Barton CRUIKSHANK aka Donald DOUGLASS

I found this and thought you might enjoy it - some of the spelling errors are their's - like Puerto Rico, lol - and I'm sure some are mine.

The Evening Observer (Dunkirk, Chautauqua county, NY) Jan 18, 1912 Page 1,
column 1

BIG INSURANCE WAS COLLECTED
Capt. CRUIKSHANK, Supposed to Have Been Drowned in St. Lawrence River, Has
Reappeared.
UNDER ASSUMED NAME COURTED ANOTHER GIRL
Just Before the Wedding He Was Recognized By Adjt. Gen. Verbeck of N.Y.
National Guard and Has Again Disappeared.
(by United Press.)

New York, Jan. 18 – Vanishing into the night after crushing his canoe so that it would be believed that he was dead – a plot that worked so well that his wife collected $20,000 life insurance – Captain Barton
CRUIKSHANK, of Potsdam, this state, soldier, athlete and educator, wandered about the country for several months and then came to New York as “Donald DOUGLASS”.
Under that name it developed today, he courted Miss Catherine ROBERT of Centre Moriche Long Island, and their engagement was to have been announced shortly. But just when it seemed that he succeeded in assuming a new personality, CRUIKSHANK was recognized by former associates in the State National Guard and he is now once more a fugitive while the girl he leaves is congratulating herself on her narrow escape.
At her home today Miss ROBERT told the story of her engagement to the dashing former guardsman. She was introduced to him by her brother who had met him in a business way and was charmed with his frank and engaging manner. Last Saturday Miss ROBERT accompanied “DOUGLASS” to the Porto Rican steamer and he sailed for Nuguabo, Porto Rico, on business connected with the engineering and contracting establishment he had begun here. Whether he is actually on board the steamer is not known but many here think that he did not sail. They believe he took some other route knowing that he had been recognized and that his DOUGLASS disguise had become known.
CRUIKSHANK told Lowen E. GINN, a New York lawyer, who went to see him after his identity had been established by Adjutant General Verbeck of the State National Guard that he had sunk all of his money trying to establish a military school and decided to disappear and make people think him dead. So in June, 1910 he went canoeing on the St. Lawrence and stove in the side of the canoe so it would be believed he had been run down by a steamer and drowned. Then he made his way to Cleveland and secured a job as solicitor of the National Guard magazine. In this position he attended the various National Guard encampments and finally came to this city where under the name of DOUGLASS he got a contract to do some engineering work for the State National Guard. General VERBECK met him under the name of DOUGLASS and, despite the fact that he had shaved off his long beard and mustache and his hair had turned snow white recognized him as the former officer with whom he had been associated. VERBECK sent word to Mrs. CRUIKSHANK’s attorney. According to GINN, CRUIKSHANK declared he had never been so happy as since he abandoned his family and former friends and he also said that he had been sending money to his wife under an assumed name telling her that he was a friend of her husband.
It is said that arrangements will be made at once to refund the insurance money sold on CRUIKSHANK’s policy.

William Cruikshank

I have received a bunch of letters dating from the 1920s up through about 1988 or so. They were letters from a great aunt of mine in Illinois to her cousins who lived in Elgin, OR, Flora and Evangline to name two of them.

The letters don't seem to contain much information that would allow a brick wall to suddenly come open. They are more along the lines of "how's the weather, it's been cold/hot, thanks for replying, so and so is sick/recuperated/died, etc. They seemed to have written one another quite a bit.

Before I toss them, I am posting this so anything who thinks they might be interested in them I can send them to you or scan a couple to see if it would be worth it. The letters in the 1930s are rather dark because of age.

I can be reached at stlfan45@hotmail.com after 12 August. I will be out of town for a few days.

CRUIKSHANK, WINTER DESCENDANTS LOOKUP

Hello

Can anyone help please?

I am looking for descendants of George Winter and Millenda Kennard Cruikshank who married in March quarter 1906 in Newcastle. Millenda was born in 1879 in Gateshead and I am unsure about George Winter's date and place of birth.

Millenda was one of seven children born to James Cruikshank born 1844 in Sevenoaks, Kent and Ann Ferguson, born 1845 in Holme Cultram, Abbey Town, Cumbria. My maternal grandfather Joseph James Cruikshank was an older brother to Millenda.

Thank you

Brenda.
Jane Cruikshank was born in 1705 in Virginia. She married David Pitts born 1702 in St. Anne Parish, Essex, Virginia about 1722. He lived until October of 1783. They had ten children, one of whom was named Lunsford Pitts born 1729 in Essex County. I mention Lunsford thinking that it is a surname connected to the Cruikshank family. I understand that Cruikshank is a Scottish name and am hoping that someone can connect her to her parents. I am told that she is a possible daughter to Alexander Cruikshank and his wife Mary, but have no further clues.

Hello Michael

Thank you so much for responding to my message about my Cruikshank family and for all of the information, it was very kind of you.

I have the Cruikshank family from 1841 in Kent (where my gt-grandfather James was born) through to the 1901 census in Northumberland/Durham, except for the 1891 census, where I can't find any of them; even my grandfather Joseph James. So it's possible that the family were on the move at that time as James was first of all a policeman, then an insurance agent and finally the manager of a post offioe and although he started life in Kent he had lived in Cumbria, Lancashire, Northumbria and Durham.

Altbough I have sent for quite a few certificates it gets to be a very expensive hobby at £7.00 a time. I suppose what I was really hoping for was some kind soul who may be able to look for info for George Victor and Millenda whilst researching their own family on parish records.

I have previously had a quick look into Winter and Weaver births from 1911 onwards with Cruikshank as the mother, but I will do so again.

So once again thank you for taking the time to contact me, I appreciate it.

Best wishes

Brenda

Re: CRUIKSHANK FAMILY IN NEWCASTLE.DURHAM

Brenda,

You, like all of us, are needing to know information contained within registrations of marriages etc, that is not contained in the Indexes. The BMD indexes unfortunately just contained abbreviated details from the full registration.

The details ( e.g. parents of spouses ) are not contained in Indexes and are only available from the original register.

Libraries, archives, County Record Offices etc, do not hold theses details. So the only source of this needed info is the Register Office that holds the original register.

In the main, Register Offices will only provide the info in the form of a copy of the entry in the register.... for a fee of seven pounds.

Some religious denomination church records of marriages contain similar info to that which was registered. .

Nowadays many Register Offices are more sympathetic to Family History researchers than they used to be !. For example one can apply for a copy certificate, specifying facts on the "event" to reduce the chance of buying the "wrong" record. (e.g. " I Will have the cert as long as bride's father is James and his occupation was police officer " etc.

Also there are clues about that lead to discovered facts..

For example, for the marriage of Millenda, you have already seen the four spouses on the same "page" for the two marriages reg in Newcastle in March Qtr of 1906.

You see Millenda, two grooms Weaver and Winter and a second bride Ursula Urwin.

Right, search ( on FreeBMD) for Weaver births in Newcastle from 1906 to say, 1920...... You will notice from births from 1911 ( or is it 1912) that the index provides additional info.. i.e.the maiden name of the mother of the child. The maiden name UNWIN appears on a couple of Weaver births.

So the strong probility is that Urwin/Unwin married Weaver, and Cruikshank married Winter! ( But it would have been nice to seen the maiden name Cruikshank in Winter birth registrations.

Do you have the family together on Census 1891 ?

Michael Dixon
Newcastle
Dear all

Can some kind soul help me with a birth and two marriage lookups please? George Victor and Millenda are my maternal grandfather's siblings.

Birth:
George V. Cruikshank born about 1885 (accoring to the 1901 census) - Felling/Gatehead. Father James Cruikshank, mother should be Ann (Annie) Ferguson.

Marriage:
George V. Cruikshank to Jemima Grant ?
Marriage listed as between Oct - Dec 1906
Page 177 - Volume 10b. Newcastle district.
I need to check that George's father is shown as James Cruikshank.

Millenda Kennard Cruikshank married Richard Weaver or George Winter. Which one?
Marriage listed as between Jan - Mar 1906.
Page 178 -Volume 10b. Newcastle district.
Millenda's name has been spelt in different ways in other records and census returns but I believe this may the correct spelling.
Again I need to make sure that Millenda's father is shown as James Cruikshank.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give to fill these two gaps.

Thank you

Brenda Hull
My great grandfather was born in Edinburgh, Scotland
and came to U. S. by way of Canada as all Scots did it seems like. He settled in southern Iowa and moved to Nebraska in 1860's. Many Cruikshanks came down from Canada through Minnesota. I don't know my great grandfathers brothers or sisters. If I find out more I will let you know, but not before Christmas. I have put my geneology away for the holidays. Tressie

I am looking for a family for my Gr.Gr. Grandfather Charles Cruikshank. My grandfather says he was born in Canada, but i have found he was born in Northern Iowa @1860 and died in Northern Iowa. He had one son, Glenn who married Florence Eva Dalbey in 1925.
could we be possibly looking for the same family? danelle

Hi Lin

Thank you for your swift response to my request.

I had already found this marriage and I feel sure that this is my Peter, sadly without Jessie's maiden name. I was trying not to lay out money for a certificate.

As you say, they may still be transcribing the data so I'll just have to be patient for a while longer to see if her name suddenly appears. If not then I will have to send for the certificate.

I appreciate your help very much.

Brenda.

This is from Free BMD. The whole index has not been transcribed so this may not be your relative. This info should be enough for you to purchase a certificate if you need to.

Cheers
