To whom it might concern,

My name is James Carter Gettings. Richard Cruise migrated to the U.S. in 1847 from Ireland. He married Honora Timmons. She migrated to the U. S. from Ireland in 1849. Where they were married I am not sure but I think it was in Indiana. They had 7 children while living in Indiana. then moved to Atchison County , Kansas where they had 7 more children. Honora Cruise (Timmons) died in Los Angeles, California I believe in 1906. I have a copy of her death certificate and a picture of Richard and Honora Cruise with all 13 children that survived to adulthood. Grace Christine Cruise, one of their youngest daughters was my grand mother,my fathers mother, who married Albert Gettings.

My address is: 17825 Catalpa Street, Hesperia, CA. 92345. My phone number is: 760-947-7877. You can e-mail me direct at: GETTINGSJAMES@aol.com if you want more information.
Jim Gettings

I have just ( by accident ) come across a copy of Valentine Cruise Family tree. My great great grandmother was elizabeth cruise who was born ( one of three) in rugby in warwickshire on 1st june 1855. She came to Liverpool and married Henry Cook and went on to have 6? children. One of them was my grandfather ( also henry cook ) who went on to have my mother and two sons. So there is a Valentine Cruise connection here in Liverpool.

Hi Jan

I've been on holiday to Rhodes too though it was about 20 years ago and I suspect it's changed somewhat since then. Did you get to do the day trip to Symi, which is a beautiful little island? Do you have any male Cruises in your line? DNA testing might be able to provide the breakthrough if you are struggling with the paper trail. You can read more about my project here and how it all works:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/CruwysDNA

If you are interested, my one-name study, is also featured in the current (June) issue of Family History Monthly in an article on the Guild of One-Name Studies. I'm mainly focusing on the names Cruse and Cruwys but I've also acquired a fair amount of information on Cruises in the process as the surnames are never stable.

Debbie Kennett

Hi Debbie, sorry for delay I am on holiday in Rhodes at the moment.
There are quite a few Cruises in Liverpool, we have quite a large family but the name has not changed spelling - it seems always to have been Cruise (although I appreciate in documents it is basically down to how the Clerk decided it would be spelled). The family originally came from Ireland but I have come a bit unstuck too as there are so many Cruises on the passenger lists from Ireland and I think Liverpool is the next largest area for Cruises. I hope to spend more time doing research and if I find anything I will let you know. I found the parish records helpful.
Regards Jan

We have found family in Belfast although dad seems to recall they had family in Waterford also.
Looking at the passenger lists it is quite a common name from Ireland/Liverpool.
My family are from Liverpool.
Jan

I as yet haven't checked my source but feel it is correct as several other things fit. It also appears correct as Washington Cruise lived nearby. Many times small clues and much digging and answers come in the Blair and Huntingdon county area. Me having several books from a resident of Hollisdaysburg with a fly leaft notation the that person was in Roanoke, VA for 3 years led to finding a newspaper tidbit about that person returning the family to Hollidaysburg from Roanoke. The person who passed this on had done some deep digging because Many Janes father Simon Ross Cooper had helped one of her ancesters to get a Civil War Widows pension. A lot of times marriage info comes from newspaper articles about the event. I have found several marriages that way. Many of the records in Blair county have been transcribed and are available for the Blair County Genealogical Society. I have several of their publications that I find useful. They had been suggested by another person doing researsh on the McClure family. Simon Ross Cooper was the father of my greatgrandmother Missouri Ann Cooper McClure.

Jim

You mentioned the BCGS web site. They have been a good resource for some time. They have well over 100 items that they publish several of which I keep handy at all times.

The 1873 atlas is of both Huntington and Blair counties. The parts not on the BCGS are on the Huntington county site.

My greatgrandfather Alex McClure- Missouri Anne Cooper's husband home in on the Hollisdaysburg pages. Others in my family are there also including S.R. Cooper.

The two best possibilities for Mary Jane's husband are Michael Cruise or Washington Cruise. Both had wives named Mary about the right age. Several runs at the census records end up with no good info even using the childrern as search sugjects. Will have to think some more.
My grandmother write in 1941 that Mary Jane Cooper died in 1868. The info she had apparentlty came my grandfathers mother Missouri Ann Cooper McClure. She listed a total of 8 children of Simon Ross Cooper. Many do not appear in any census I have found to date. One C.H.J. Cooper is buried near Simon and Lydia. The two possible Cruise males I found were indeed from the 1850/1860 census. One lived next door to Simon and Lydia after Mary Jane dropped from the household. The wife in that case was named Mary and the age is off ony by a year. Why Cruise?- Well just a stab at a mention on a web page showing the Simon and Lydia burial stone. That by the way is the only place I found any confirmation of C.H.J. Cooper other than what my grandmother
Lillie Mae McClure had written.

Hi
Thanks very much for your reply and information . I think I must have been a bit tired when I posted the original as I meant to write Clooncon rather than Cloncoon. Certainly Glenamaddy comes up in Multimap.com although Cloncoon may be a little small.

Honor was born January 1871 and Bridget was born February 1873. I seem to remember Honor being written as Honoria bur cannot remember where at present. The only piece of information that I have on Thomas Cruise was that he married Mary White in Jan 1880.

Thanks once again
Regards
John
Johnstone of 234 West 114 Street, New York.
Honor and Bridget were the daughters of Thomas Cruise and Mary White

Many thanks

John Higgs

Hi again:
Thank you. Great clues.
I tried searching the census images at HeritageQuest,
but had no joy. Cooper is a fairly common name, and unless I've missed something, you haven't shared the state, county, township where I can find the census that has Simon/Lydia next to a Cruise entry. Did find a probably Simon/Lydia at 1870, but that is after timing of the record suggesting Mary Ann died 1868.
Might you also share the _given_ names of the two Cruise men, and point out which one was living with a Mary next to/near Simon and Lydia.
I don't subscribe to Ancestry ... If you post the additional information, I'll try to give it another shot later today. Thank you. --GJ

See the 1870 census at Blair County, Pennsylvania, Frankstown/Hollidaysburg page 276 (stamped on facing sheet); Dwelling 107, family 109; entry for Mary Cruse, ae 35, keeping house, appears HOH, has apparent dau. Nancy ae 19; Caroline ae 14; Blancne, ae 10; Mary, ae 6; and Harry ae 5. Ages for these children do not match up to the entries for Michael's children at 1860, but entry nonetheless interesting. Two sheets back (dwellin 91-93, 94?,and 98 include HOHs Lewis Cruise, and a Mary Crawford.

More later. --GJ

Hi Jim:
I found the family of S. R. Cooper in 1860 US Census, at Blair; next door is the woman who may be your Mary/Mary Ann with apparent husband, Michael Cruse/Cruise and two apparent several children, Nancy, ae 7 and John, ae 2. Also residing there is an Henrietta, ae 15; possibly Michael's sister or other relative. [ break ]

Most interesting is an 1873 atlas for Frankstown. See the entry for S. R. Cooper, next to the school. Does it look as though, in 1873, there is a second building on his property?
http://www.usgwarchives.net/maps/pa/county/blair/1873/franks... [ break ]

Okay then, as to the Michael Cruse/Cruise at Blair. He seems quite likely the 18 year Michael Cruse at 1850 residing at Blair County, Pennsylvania, Frankstown, page 163 (stamped), dwelling 94, family 97; 11 Sept 1850. Head of household is a Mary [D.?/A?] Crawford, ae 40. Children in the household are listed in age order as Frederick Cruse ae 20, a boatman; Michael ae 18; “Cather?" Cruse, female, ae 17; George Cruse ae 14; Lewis Cruse ae 14 (to the left, they are noted as twins); Sidney Cruse ae 12. Also reported there are two young boys, listed _after_ the noted Cruse entries, William Crawford, ae 7 and Arthur Crawford, ae 6 – all in that household born PA. [ break ]
One door down is family of Isaac Crawford, ae 33, and poss. wife, Alice, ae 23. [ break ]
Worth investigating if that HOH, Mary, was married twice so that all those listed are might be her children. [ break ]

I'll have to check separately to see if I can trace any of the Cruise men from 1850 or Michael's family 1860 further. [ break ]

Also separately, your objective is to prove whether Michael's wife had maiden name Cooper. There seem several places where a record of her maiden name might be recorded. In haste: 1) Marriages or Deaths of her children. Even if she did die in 1868, she may have had more than 2, but even finding more about the two whose names appear in the 1860 census might provide a lead. If they lead long lives, there's a good chance one of the death certificates might call out the mother's maiden name. 2) Birth or baptism record for these two or other Cruise/Cruse children in the period 1853 t0 1868; 3) Probate or estate for Simon Cooper--does it call out any children of a daughter Mary/Mary Ann; 4) Marriage or death record, news item, church record for Michael and/or his wife. [ break ]

When I think of research in Pennsylvania, I think of church records. I'm not sure if you know Simon's religion. Perhaps you do -- perhaps you could learn if the records of the church he attended have been preserved and or published. [ break ]

There is/was a Gary L. Cruse of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; has family history posting at genealogy.com that includes: "John Cruse was born nr. Reading, Berks Co., Pa in 1761. A
veteran of the Rev. War. In about 1820 he settled in Frankstown Twp., Huntingdon Co. now Blair Co., Pa."
See the link for Gary L. Cruse's contact information (3 Sept 2003):
http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/users/c/r/u/Gary-L-Cruse-... [ break ]

Also in mean time. Blair County has a genealogical society library. See their website for address and phone number. http://www.bcgslibrary.org/pub.html . I telephoned to learn they will be open tonight after 6:30. Their website indicates the library maintains a newspaper archive. If you tell them the family names you are researching, they might know if the society maintain a file for either Copper or Cruse/Cruise. The society will undertake some lookups (no email) and research ($/no email) - see the links from their website. [ break ]
Above in some haste. More later I hope. --GJ
DNA Project

I am running a worldwide DNA Project which is investigating the surnames CRUSE, CRUISE, CREWS, CREWES, CRUWYS, etc. We currently have 29 participants from six different countries (England, France, Australia, Canada, America and Thailand). We are already discovering that the present-day surname is not necessarily a predictor of the genetic match. We have CREWES matching CRUWYS, and CREWS matching CRUSE. Anyone with any of the many variant surnames is invited to participate in the project and join us on our voyage of discovery. Please note that there is a separate DNA project for CRUISE of Ireland, though it is possible to join both projects. For further information please visit our project website:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/CruwysDNA

or see my profile page on the Guild of One-Name Studies website:

http://www.one-name.org/members/profiles/maintenance.html

Debbie Kennett
England

I've been given a copy of the death certificate of John CRUISE "the son of a laborer" who died aged 4 months in 1838 in Bradworthy, Devon, England. The informant was William CRUISE of Bradworthy who was presumably the father. If this certificate is of interest to anyone please get in touch.

Debbie Kennett
http://www.one-name.org/profiles/cruwys.html
http://cruwys.blogspot.com
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/CruwysDNA

I am connected, by marriage of a great aunt, to a Cruise family. They resided outside Limavady, County Londonderry in Northern Ireland in the early to mid 1900's.
I haven't yet had time to trace them further back.
The descendants of this line now live mainly in Belfast.
