I live in lexington kentucky. The only Crutcher's left in my family are my daughter, son and myself. My grandfather Curtis, his wife Charlotte and my father Curtis Jr. have all passed so I was wondering if there were any family members left in the area. Charlotte's mother was Ruth Farrow

Hi, Lorien--

Even though I had posted back in March on this thread, I really dropped the ball on it and had even forgotten that Sandy had given me the Nancy Chambers info on here originally. I ran across the thread again on an internet search.

Would it still be possible to get a copy of those pages? I would love to see them.

Thank you!

--Brijit
John Robert Crutcher birth Mississippi / death Arkansas

I'm searching for information on my great-grandfather who died in Cotton Plant, AR in 1913 (b 1884 Mississippi). I'm hoping to find out more about him and hopefully more about who his parents were. I believe his parents to be James Crutcher (b. 1843 Williamson County TN) and Mary (Farmer)Crutcher (b. 1850 Mississippi). I don't have any information that leads me to be completely certain that these are his parents. It is rumoured in our family that John Robert was either half Native American or perhaps a quarter. I'd love to find out more solid information regarding this aspect of my lineage.

John Robert Crutcher was married to Annie E Williams and had Ethel and Johnnie. Johnnie was born in 1913 the year that John Robert died. In fact, he died before she was born. Thus the disconnect of family information. After his death she remarried to Clarence Elkins and had five more children.

Thank you for reading and I hope that someone can fill in the blanks.

Regards,

Ted Hitch

Just out of curiosity are you kin to Michael, Logan and Mildred? Michael was my Biological father is why I ask but yes I have all that information if you still need it. Please let me know. Micheal was also one of 5 children. He has also passed away, and I know of and have located 2 brothers, and am wondering do I have anymore brothers or sisters out there. It is very important to me as I have an orphan disease called Devic's Disease (you can learn more at www.orpha.net) and now that Michael has passed I feel safe to proceed forward in searching for siblings and it is extremely important as there is no treatment for this disease and it will significantly shorten my life. Let me know if you need that information please I will get it to you either in her or privately however you prefer, and if you can help me further I would appreciate it, cause I am looking for children of that Michael Crutcher, son of Logan and Mildred.

The majority of my ancestors came from Tennessee.
The trouble maker was Larkin (b about 1772 in NC or Virginia), as we don't know for sure where he came from. He was a farmer/preacher, had two wives and 23 children. If you can find out more about him, you will be a Crutcher family hero!

I'm searching for any information on Mary J. Crutcher. Crutcher is her married surname; I have no records with her maiden name. She is purported to have been born in Missisippi, 1850, appearing in a census in Arkansas in 1900. She was married a to James Crutcher, born in Tennessee, abt 1846.

I'm hoping to find out if she is either Native American, or of Native American descent.

Thank you much,

Ted Hitch

Nancy Crutcher has a will recorded in Franklin County, KY, dated 4 Nov 1857
and recorded 21 Dec 1857. In that will she refers to her deceased son
Charles T.
Lorien,

Thank you for your prompt response to my query. I thought I had seen information that made Betsy Norvel the same age as her husband, which was what made the issue so questionable. Your information that she may have indeed been younger could solve the problem. I won't be as leery about including them in my family tree now.

I would be very grateful if you could send the pages from the McNamara book. They can be sent directly to my address at the.blibit@gmail.com Let me know if there's anything I can help you with in the future!

Sincerely,

--Brijit

I have the book "Descendants of Thomas Crutcher d. 1722 Essex Co.VA" by Elizabeth McNamara. I have found her research to be quite accurate. Her facts as stated in the book coincide with the facts you stated.

It does appear odd that Hugh Crutcher b. about 1694 and his second wife Betsy Norvel would bear children at such an advanced age, but Mrs. McNamara does say John Crutcher b. 1764 who married Martha Long is their son. The book does not have Betsy Norvel's date of birth, only that she died after 1794, so perhaps she was significantly younger than you think. Hugh is said to have died in 1781.

I can send you copies of the pertinent pages of the book if you will email me directly. There is way too much info to type in this message.

Lorien Prince

Crutcher family

Hello--

I'm a descendant of James G. Crutcher (B. 1846, Kentucky), son of Charles Todd Crutcher, (b. 1821, Kentucky, married to Sarah Jane Lynch (?) 15 June 1843 Franklin, Kentucky, d. 1859).

I'm trying to verify that Charles Todd really was the son James Allen Crutcher (b. 1793, Franklin, Kentucky) and Nancy Chambers (b. 27 March 1791, Virginia, d. 1 Nov 1857).

I would also like to verify that James Allen was the son of John Crutcher (b. 1764, Caroline County, Virginia, d. 19 Sep 1824, Frankfort, Kentucky) and Martha (Mary?) Long, b. 1764, North Carolina, d. 10 Feb 1852, Frankfort, Kentucky.

All of the above makes sense, I would just like to be able to verify the accuracy of these names and dates before accepting them blindly from other people's public trees.

The greatest reason for my concern is the common listing for John Crutcher's parents. If it is correct, his father, Hugh Crutcher, was born in 1692 in Essex, Virginia and his mother, Betsy Norvel, was born in 1693 in Caroline County, Virginia. That would make Hugh and Betsy 71 and 72 when their son, John, was born.

Has anyone else noticed this discrepancy? I assume there is a generation or two missing. I have been unable to verify anything through birth records or census reports from James Allen on down. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find real documents and not just Ancestry.com family trees?

Any help you offered would be greatly appreciated. And I live in California. I could do an exchange in information if anybody needs anything on California ancestors or details.

Much thanks!

Unfortunately, there is no one still alive in my family to ask more about LJ. My cousin Charles Henderson is who told me about the cross-eye trait. I don't think LJ ever lived in Texas. Charlotte probably came and lived with her brother in law, my grandfather Charles Carey Crutcher who practiced medicine in Mount Vernon. I know nothing about LJ's death or burial place.

Thank you very much for the info. I had the photos, so you must have already given them to me. I really appreciate your help and interest! Balous Preston Crutcher's father was David Preston Crutcher. I have been doing research and I feel like I am going to find out that Leander Allen Crutcher was indeed David's brother. They both married, David (in 1887) and Leander (in 1896), in Milam Co. The Milam County 1870 Census is where the first official document in Texas that I have found my Dabbs/Crutcher TN family.

It is funny that you mention the cross-eyed trait. One of my first cousins was cross-eyed and he had surgery (or whatever you do to correct it). See, that tells me that my Richard Dabbs/Crutcher must be related to Larkin J. Crutcher and not his wife, Louisa. I knew that there was a chance he took a surname from his wife's line, but I just felt like it was someone in his family, maybe connection through an in-law of the Dabbs. Both the older men, Rev Larkin (SR) and Rev Richad Dabbs, my gr-grandfather must have respected. Just my opinion.

Can you tell me when Larkin went to GA and why? Didn't he come to Texas then to GA? Did Charlotte come back to TX to be with her Kids when Larkin died? Do you know where he was buried and with whom was he living when he died there in GA? Was he pastoring a church there or was he a circuit rider? hehe I guess I have asked a lot to questions, but I am so interested in Larkin J Crutcher!!

Hello again.
I have some information about Larkin J. Crutcher, b1828 d1895 in Dalton, Georgia. He married Charlotte Jane Rood b1825 d1903 in Mount Vernon, Texas and is buried in the Crutcher family plot at the town cemetery. He is most famous for passing along the cross-eyed trait to the family. I attached a picture of LJ and Charlotte. My mother was born in Rockdale. Her father, William Monroe Wells ran lignite mines until fires made them unworkable. This was about the time oil was discovered in East Texas and became the fuel of choice. He went bankrupt in Rockdale.

Hi again! :)

We have "talked" before, but I don't remember ever knowing that your mother and father were in Rockdale. Or was that just your mother's family?

I have been trying to connect the dots with all the Crutcher's that I have stumbled upon. My grandfather was born in Dallas Co, July 17, 1880. His mother and father were born in Nashville, TN and came to Texas in Dec 1865 or the early spring of 1866. When my gr-grandparents crossed the state line and settled in Texas, he (un)officially became Richard C Crutcher. In Tennessee his name was Richard C Dabbs. He had 3 boys born as Dabbs in Nashville, who became Crutcher's in Texas. All the remaining children born here, of course, were born with the last name of Crutcher, not Dabbs. I have been trying to find out why he chose the name Crutcher. I have asked myself all these questions:
Was his mother connected to any Crutcher? (She was a Ham)
Surnames of her family - Ham,Meenes,Coffee,Rucker,Kimbro
Was Richard Crutcher connected by family ties to Crutchers?
Surnames of his family - Dabbs,Burgess,Foster,Boyd, etc. Rev Richard Dabbs b @ 1772 or 1777 & Rev Larkin Crutcher (1777) were cohorts in TN maybe? What faith was Larkin???

L J Crutcher, (whoever he is - Rev Larkinn's son b 1828, maybe?) bought the pocket watch from the estate of Henry B Dabbs in 1850, uncle of my Richard! So, was this LJ Crutcher kin to the Dabbs, family friend of the Dabbs, or just purchased the watch from the estate? Who knows! But the estate only had a horse and saddle, a Lapin watch, and $18. Henry was 26 years old and not married living with his sister-n-law when he died!

I don't think that my great-grandfather Richard C Dabbs/Crutcher just took the name Crutcher without any thought. I just feel that somewhere in my searching, I will solved this mystery!!!!

Interesting....
My mother's family William Monroe Wells lived in Rockdale. She married my father Howard Kelly Crutcher of the Larkin Crutcher line. I wonder if there might be a connection. I do not have any of the first names you mentioned in my database.
It would be nice to find my English ancestors. It has been speculated that the English name of Croucher was changed to Crutcher in the Virginia area. My earliest know Crutcher ancestor was Larkin Crutcher but I don't know who his father was or where he came from. You may find something on my web site that might be of help in your quest.
http://earye.com/The%20CRUTCHER%20Family.htm
Good luck in your search.

My great grandmother was Lizzie M. Crutcher Freeman. She was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1877. Her parents were Henry L. Crutcher and Margaret E. Williamson Crutcher. They all resided in Maury County, Tennessee and Williamson County, Tennessee. Henry L.'s daddy and mother were Absalom P. Crutcher and Jane P. Childress. Absalom's daddy was William Crutcher of Amherst County, Virginia. His wife was Elizabeth Pollard. I have just started researching my Crutcher/Williamson line - in the past year I mean. If there is any information that I can share with you, I will be glad to send it to you.
Happy family hunting - Patricia Gann-Mortimer
