Re: Eliza Crutchfield b VA, Campbell County in 1870 age 80

The Eliza Crutchfield listed as a spinster in 1860 is most likely the widow of Joshua Critchfield, Susan Crutchfield McClain Bowman's father. This Elizabeth was born too late to be Susan's mother, so it appears Joshua married at least twice. His first marriage apparently occurred in Virginia, as noted in Susan's declaration of Virginia as her birthplace. You will, in fact, find Joshua Critchfield living in Wythe County, Virginia, in the 1810 census, identified as "Joseph Scritchfield." Land records show that his brother Palmer and uncle Samuel were living in Wythe County, Virginia, at the same time.

You'll also find the spinster Elizabeth in the 1850 Census living next door to the Bowmans, at a time when Joshua was living with them, and pushing 90. My theory: Elizabeth and Joshua were still both alive and married in 1850, but he had grown old and senile, and needed tending. So the Bowman family took him in, while Elizabeth looked after her remaining younger daughters who were still at home, and their children.

Permilia is not one of those daughters -- she was Permilia Ayers, the wife of Joshua and Elizabeth's son William. How do we know this? In the 1928 Campbell County, Tennessee, death certificate of Sarah Crutchfield, her father is identified as "Bill Crutchfield" and her mother as "Amelia Ayers." Permelia will appear in later censuses as Permelia or Meelie, and her children are not just Sarah, but also James Franklin, Dock and Preston Crutchfield.

The Provy you mentioned is, I believe, one of the younger daughters of Joshua and Elizabeth. Provy is undoubtedly short-hand for Providence. Joshua Critchfield's brother, John, who also came to Claiborne County, but from Surry County, North Carolina, was married to a Providence Whitehead.

Finally, the Emily, age 19 in the 1850 census, is in all likelihood another one of the younger daughters of Joshua and Elizabeth.

Feel free to contact me if you have other questions about this family. I have researched them extensively, being descended from both these Critchfields and the Bowmans. Also you'll note: I used the surname Critchfield here. That's because it appears the early generations of the family went by Critchfield or Scritchfield. Only after 1850 did those remaining in Claiborne County adopt "Crutchfield" as their surname. And different branches of the family that left before 1850 often retained the surnames Critchfield or Scritchfield, with some in Missouri evolving into "Scrutchfields" and "Crithfields," and a branch out of Floyd County, Kentucky, becoming "Scutchfields."

I will need to check my notes to see if the Shelton name appears anywhere in association with Samuel Critchfield or Scritchfield. I use both surnames because he had four sons that I can pinpoint -- a William, a Benjamin, a Henry Anderson and a Samuel C -- and at least, the descendants of Henry Anderson went first by Scritchfield, and later by Scrutchfield.

Samuel Senior did live in Surry County, North Carolina from around 1755-1790, the oldest son of a John Critchfield who worked as a constable in the Yadkin River Valley. As far as I can tell, Samuel Senior next journeyed to Wythe County, Virginia, then on into Claiborne and Campbell Counties, Tennessee in the early 1800s. Several of his brothers did head further north into Kentucky and Indiana, including an Amos, an Arthur, a Nathaniel and a John.

The name Henderson doesn't ring a bell, although Samuel's son Henry Anderson does sound like Henderson. As far as I know, though, Henry Anderson did not go north. He served a few years as a constable in Campbell County, Tennessee, around 1813-1815, and next surfaced in the 1830 census in Randolph County, Missouri. Many members of this extended family went to Missouri, a few into Arkansas and Kansas, but primarily Indiana and Kentucky.

This is all great information, thanks for sharing it! Have any of you ever come across a Henderson Crutchfield in this line? I believe he is the brother of Andrew Jackson and Rufus Morgan who ended up in Michigan with a James McCormick and his wife Jane Shelton around 1842. Andrew and Rufus were born in KY or TN in the later 1820's, but they list their fatehr as unknown on their records. They were bonded out to McCormick in Bath County in 1842. We have seen in some of our research that Samuel Critchfield is very close to Heziakiah Shelton in the 1780's, both from Surrey County. Did anybody in this Critchfield/Crutchfield family die early leaving young children behind perhaps?

Thank you, and yes, I would like to hear more about George Washington Crutchfield. I had wondered about him for some time, as he named a son Zopher, and that was a clue!

The name Zopher, by the way, probably came from Zopher Jayne who died in 1790 in Wythe County, Virginia. Jayne's widow, Elizabeth Lyons, married Palmer Critchfield. Palmer was one of Joshua Critchfield's brothers, the others who are known being Hiram and John. All of them landed up in Claiborne County, Tennessee, along with their uncle Samuel.

It was Samuel's family who had come first to the region, settling not in Virginia or Tennessee, but in Surry County, North Carolina, around 1757. Before then, the family lived in Sussex County, New Jersey. It's not really known when they came to America or where they landed. Some researchers have connected them with a Critchfield family that lived in Boston in the late 1600s, but that's never been proven.

Thank you so much for this information on Zopher. I know 3 or 4 descendents of Zopher who will be happy to know this info.

You may want to consider adding George Crutchfield as a child of Zopher and his first wife. George's death record in Clinton County, IN. says that his father was Zopher, mother unknown. Born 1818 in Tenn. I can provide more on George if you are interested.

Thanks again.

Zopher was born around 1795 in Wythe County, Virginia, to Joshua Critchfield and Joshua's unknown wife. By 1811, Joshua had moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee. Zopher served during the War of 1812 with two of his cousins, Alfred and Jesse, sons of Joshua's brother John Critchfield. Zopher, also known as Zopheus, married circa 1820 in Claiborne County, Tennessee, to an unknown wife. Their children included James Franklin Crutchfield (my third great grandfather), Prior Lee, Barthena, Orlena and William (born in 1837). They had at least two other boys and two other girls born before 1830 whose identities remain unknown.

None of these children went with him to Bath County, Kentucky, as all of them appear in the 1850 census for Claiborne County, Tenn., living next to James Franklin and his wife, Jane Wilson. The exception: Barthena, who had married George Washington Pridemore. The Pridemores later left for Livingston County, Missouri, before moving on to Texas.

That's pretty much what I know about Zopheus, but feel free to contact me if you have any questions about his siblings and his father's family. He had 11 brothers and sisters that are known, plus two other sisters whose identities still remain a mystery.

This extended Critchfield family in Claiborne County, Tenn., is quite interesting because the descendants now go by at least six different surnames -- Critchfields, Crutchfields, Crithfields, Scritchfields, Scutchfields and Scrutchfields. They represent a fascinating study in how names can change and evolve, but it sure has frustrated efforts by descendants to learn their roots.

I have not found much on Zopher prior to his marriage to the widow Judith Sharp in Bath Co. KY. in 1838. I believe he came to Bath Co. from Claiborne Co. TN. There was a Zopher Critchfield listed on the 1830 census in Claiborne Co. which I believe to be him. I found a possible son of Zopher named George Crutchfield. According to George's death record he was born 1818 in TN. He died in 1903 in Clinton Co. IN. His father's name is listed as Zopher on his death record but no name for mother. George named a son Zopher.

I recently came upon a survey recorded under the names of Millie and William Crutchfield and the survey was done for John Crutchfield. I believe this may indicate that John was the son of Millie and William, looking for clues.

Milly, Wife of Henry Crutchfield, mid-1700s, NC

For many years now, an unproven fact has been passed around stating that, MILLY, the wife of Henry Crutchfield (VA to Chatham Co, NC) was the daughter of Timothy Terrell of NC. This is even appearing in many, many family trees. To my knowledge, no one has given any proof of this. Mr. Cooper, in his work on the Cruthcfield family in NC, guessed that a Milly, listed in the will of Timothy Terrell in NC, was our Milly. There is no married name given in the will for this Milly. Terrell family information has this Milly Terrell moving to GA and marrying there. No maiden name is given for Milly (Crutchfield) on her burial stone. I have seen it. It states that she was Henry's wife and that she was born and married in Virginia. Henry and Milly had 9 sons and 1 daughter. None of the 9 sons was named Timothy. PLEASE, everyone, remove the Terrell name from our Milly in your information and in your trees or post the proof that she was a Terrell for all to see. Thank you, Janel Crutchfield Howell (JanelHowel@aol.com)

The wife of Henry Crutchfield (abt. 1740, Caroline Co.,VA-1787, Chatham Co., NC) was named Milly (Milley). Her surname is unknown. Documented records indicating her surname as "Terrell" have not been found. There is no proof she was a "Terrell" or the daughter of Timothy Terrell. Her grave marker indicates she was married in Virginia; born in 1748 in Virginia; died 15 Oct. 1828 in Chatham County, NC. If anyone has documented proof Milly was a "Terrell" please share it.
Thanks for the reply. Do you know the birthdate for your grandad and also who he married? We believe James Richard Crutchfield, my husband's grandad, always lived near Rutherford Co and Nashville. He was born in 1875, and 1880,1900,1910census records we have show Rutherford Co. We also have a newspaper article telling about him being hit by a car and killed in 1936 in Nashville.
