Mary Ann Cryer, Wiltshire, England

Hi, I am a descendant of Mary ann Cryer and am looking for information on her family, specifically her baptism and parents' names and her possible marriage.

She was born around 1821 and her death certificate says she comes from Wiltshire, although where exactly I'm uncertain.

She emigrated to New Zealand arriving in 1841 and the family seems to have come via Australia as my great, great grandmother Sarah Davis was born in Adelaide in 1841.
Apparently she married John Davis in England in around 1837 (she was supposedly around 16 years old), possibly also in Wiltshire although I can't find any marriage in the IGI or marriage records and they married (again or for the first time?) in Kaitaia, New Zealand in 1845. (They were working with missionaries and John Davis was very religious in later life so I am uncertain whether there really was a first marriage or whether it was 'created' to appear more proper). They had a daughter Emma Esia in 1840 although where I am uncertain and I can't find her birth in either England or Australia.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I keep running up against a brick wall. Thanks,
Sarah

I know you sent your mail at the beginning of the century so this report is rather late but no matter. I have only just seen it!
I have been researching my family ancestry and my great grand mother was Sundenia Biggs formerly, Sundenia Ashley.
On the marriage certificate, Felix Fred Biggs married Sundenia Ashley in 1860. Felix was a widower. The witnesses were; Jacob Ashley and Marianne Ashley. Sundenia's father was Richard Ashley. When tracing Richard Ashley,Jacob Ashley
and Marianne Ashley, they appear only on the 1851 census. After that they seem to have disappeared on the 1861 census. Only months after the wedding!
I am assuming that this family has some connection with the one you have mentioned but the names Sundenia,Ashley and Biggs etc.is too much of a coincidence not to have some significance. I would be interested to know what you think.

I'm sure you're already aware of the following. James Bosley Cryer (1895-1966) married Ethyl May Bultman (1898-1983) of New Orleans, Louisiana. She was of the Bultman Funeral Home family. Last that I read, the historic Funeral home of some fame had been turned into a book store. I believe the outside facade was preserved. Bosley and Ethyl had a daughter Ethlyn M. (1920-1982) who married Leslie Joseph Gueydan (1915-1998). I believe they resided in Metarie. They had 5 sons - Leslie, James, Stephen, Richard and Thomas.

I am a descendent of William Henry Cryer who I believe is the brother of your Mary Ann Cryer Hagerty. Their father was John Cryer who married a Mary Spicer in Dorchester Co., MD in 1811. John and Mary had the following children: Eliza, James, William Henry, Joseph Francis, Mary Ann and Margaret E. Cryer. Mary Spicer Cryer died in 1831 and is buried in Calvert Co., MD. John remarried a Prudence Spicer in 1832 in St. Mary's Co., MD. They had a daughter, Cornelia (born abt 1835). John & family had moved to Washington, D.C. by 1840. The Sept. 15, 1850 National Intelligencer, a Washington D.C. Newspaper, reported that Patrick Hagerty and Mary Ann Cryer, all of that city, were married July 28, 1850.

I am descended from James Cryer through his daughter, Mary Eliza Cryer and her first husband, Mr. Bennett. Her oldest son was Daniel Jasper Bennett born 1865. She later married Jonas Stowards. I found her death certificate that said her mother was Mary Shults. It was filled out by her stepson Robert Morse Stowards. Leah Elizabeth Cryer Cotten's death certificate says their mother was Mary Parker. Can anyone help. All of the Cryer trees say their mother was Martha Telford. I cannot find James Cryer until the 1880 census in Travis County, Texas. Does anyone know where he lived.

I have Mary Cryer as daughter of John Cryer and Mary Spicer. Some of the following information is circumstantial.

John Cryer was in Dorchester County in 1820, probably St. Mary's County by 1835 (maybe earlier), and in Washington D.C. by 1840.

Mary is found living with her brother James, in Washington D.C. in 1850.

1850 Washington Ward 7, Washington, District of Columbia
93/115
James Cryer, 30, m, Clerk U.S., b Md
Cornelia, 30, f, b Md
Anne R., 11, f, b WDC
Virginia, 7, f, b WDC
A. They are listed in St. Mary's County in 1850:

1850 3rd Election District, St. Mary's County, Maryland
17/17
Samuel Stone, 39, m, sailer, b St. Mary's County, Md
Eliza, 35, f, b Dorchester County, Md
Sarah J., 13, f, b Baltimore City, Md
Francis A., 9, f, b Baltimore City, Md
James P., 7, m, b Baltimore City, Md
Mary E., 2, f, b Baltimore City, Md
Cornelia Cryer, 15, f, b St. Mary's County, Md

As noted above, another sister, Cornelia, was bon in St. Mary's County in 1835. Whether Mary was born in Dorchester, Talbot or St. Mary's County, I have not been able to determine yet.
I am looking for information regarding Mary Cryer, reportedly born in St. Mary's County,MD. On July 27, 1850, Mary and Patrick Hagerty got a marriage license in Washington DC. Patrick started a shoe factory in Cincinnati Ohio, later moved to Washington Court House Ohio. Mary Cryer Hagerty is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati. There is a stained glass window in St. Coleman's Church in WCH, OH that is inscribed "in memory of Mary Hagerty".

I know nothing about where she came from or why other family members believe she was born in St Mary's County. I have looked for any record of her birth in Talbot, Cambridge and St. Mary's county and so far, have found nothing.

Mary Cryer Hagerty is my great-great-grandmother on my father's side of the family. Any information would be of help.

I am looking for information on William Isbell and Mary V. Cryer. Mary is the d/o Aaron Cryer & Sarah Jane Duncan. Aaron is a half brother to my ggg-grandfather Ferguson Cryer. William Isbell and Mary V. Cryer married in Giles Co, TN 12-30-1873.In 1880 Census in giles Co, TN Mary is known as Mary Isbell and her son George Isbell. On the 1900 Census Giles Go, TN she is listed as Mary Cryer and so is George and her other children Pleasant, Andrew, Robert & Babe. There is also a Sally Cryer age 70 in house with this family. Why did she and the children go back to the Cryer name, or did she actually ever get married to William??

Cryer family from Newchurch and warley

Hi, I am desperately trying to find the link between Benjamin Calverley Cryer born 1799/1800 in burnley, to Thomas Cryer and susan Calverley. I am confident I have the correct parents as IGI has benjamin's parents as Thomas and Susan, but i cannot find any birth-christening or anything on this or other sites for Benjamin only the iGI index. I am sure I will be right as this would mean Benjamins middle name is after his Mothers maiden name but dont want to go back further until I can confirm this. There are loads of Cryer's and Calverley's in Newchurch in Pendle which I believe to be the right ones, but cannot guarentee. Any help would be fabulous, thanks

Re: Cryer Family Eng. Canada, Illinois to Ohio

Hi,
My great Grandfather (Alfred Cryer) came from Wolverhampton to Canada and was in the first world war. (His attestation paper listed him as being 25 years old in 1918 which would have put his DOB at 1893. He had a brother George who moved to the states. My Great Grandfather worked on the McAllister ranch in the Banff foothills and worked for Brewster before marrying and settling into the homestead near Calgary, Alberta. They had three children, George, Tiny and Albert (Tim - who is my grandfather). My Great Grandfather was in the 1st Brigade 5th Batallion at Vimy Ridge and lost his lung to mustard gas. He was also in the Boer war before coming to Canada. I found Pat Cryers website and there is a picture ofa George Cryer there that is a spitting image of my dad in his younger days...the eyes are a dead ringer - the handlebar moustache not so much. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any personal papers (farm records, or the like) on Wiley Powell Cryer or Morgan Cryer? I a trying to chase my g-g-grandfather's movements before emancipation. I know that he was born in Louisiana and ended up in Rankin county, MS after the civil war. We also know that he was a slave. I am trying to see if there are any records that would contain information about a slave named "George".
