My grandmother was Catherine Cudahy b. 14 Mar 1885 in Ennis, Co. Clare, Ireland. Her father's name was John. I do not have her mother's name yet. The passenger listing that best matches has her arriving in New York in 1909 with another person Margaret Cudahy, age 22 (probably a sister but I don't know that) and a Julia Jackman. All three give a contact address/person in Ireland as Patrick Jackman, Ballyhale, Hugginstown, Knocktopher, Kilkenny. We grandchildren were told she was related to the Cudahy Meat Packing family of Chicago and Milwaukee. A Patrick John Cudahy and others are shown on a tree under the Search Tab, Public Family Trees. I do not know the exact nature of the relationship so have not placed them on my tree. It seems the surname was spelled in various ways even in the same family. Someone posted that the Mallow Heritage Center is a birth certificate and marriage repository for Kilkenny. You can find my tree by searching for Catherine Cudahy on Public Member Trees. See comments there.

Catherine Kate Cudahy

My grandmother left a note stating that her mother left Thomastown Ireland October 11, Sailed in the 13th and arrived and was processed through Castle Garden, New York on the 22.

I have found a record through the Castle Garden web site stating a Kate Cuddehy and brother James Cuddehy sailed on the Adriatic (White Star Lines) ship. It stated they were both born in the U.S.A which would be incorrect. I have tried to locate the passenger list through Ancestry.com and google but, am unable to locate the Adriatic, or it's arrival on that date.

Any suggestions?

Eliz O'Grady m. Cudahy resided Chicago?

I recently discovered my great great grandfather's obituary, and a reference to a sister -- Elizabeth O'Grady Cudahy.

Michael J. O'Grady was born 1849 Co. Kerry Ireland, moved to Durham, England, where he was a coal miner, married Margaret McClusky, and they moved to McDonald, PA. (His father was Patrick O'Grady; mother, possibly Elizabeth-- they also were born Ireland and resided Durham Co England before emigrating to US and residing in PA).

Micahel Joseph O'Grady's obituary, dated 9/26/1924, states: "One sister also survives, Mrs. Elizabeth CUDAHY
of Chicago."

Is this a connection for anyone?

She arrived Canada or US around 1845 or 1850 at age 16. She was supposedly related somehow to Chicago Cudahys. Any help would be greatly appreciated. MP

We assume that it was dictated, Mcnnans? The June, 1880
Minnesota State Census lists a Patrick Cuddihy, age
40, at that date...he was married to Catherine Carr Cuddihy,
age 40 in l880. They were both married in Kilkenny and lived in l97 Mississippi St., St. Paul, Minn, in l880. He was a
laborer. Can you tell us anything about John Cuddihy -Cuddahy aparantely the person writing the letter, didn't know how to spell the name, as it was dictated. We cannot always assume it happened at Ellis Island. Please reply.
Any information about the Carrs? Patrick Cuddihy was my
grandfather's father and they all settled in St. Paul.
He married Catherine Donahan (Donaghan?).
Their daughter was Hanore Cudahy (Nora?), who is my great grandmother.
There is a town in Wisconsin called Cudahy...where they started a canning plant. Town named after "Cudahy" family, but don't believe it is a relation of our Cudahy's.
Check the town of Cudahy, WI, and also check Ellis Island.com...that's where I found some of them. I do see in my notes that a Mrs. Patrick Cudahy came through Ellis in 1910 and Patrick....to Milwaukee. Also a Katharine Cudahy in 1913, age 25...to Milwaukee. That's all I found....

He married Isabella Cameron.
He was related to Michael and Patrick Cudahy who left Ireland and came to America and later opened a canning factory.
There was another brother James Francis who worked on the shipping lines and visited with Michael and Patrick's families on occasion.
Any family information would be helpful.
They came from Castlefinn in Ireland

Re: Hanora Cudahy/Luke Farrell MI / WI

You might want to continue your search in Scotland.

From what my grandparents told me..(Many years ago
while I was a kid)...The name Cudahy was adopted
because they changed religions...ie from
Catholic to Presbyterian.

A branch of the family emigrated to Scotland from Ireland
and took up the spelling Cudahy.

Might be wrong but its what I heard from my Grandparents
many many years ago........the name change to Cudahy
was because of religion. (It was a big thing back then)

In regards to the Cudahys in the states...........Well, maybe
it was because their ancestors couldn't write or read.

Cudahy existed as a name in Scotland and was accepted
as the right spelling. Hence the Cudahys in America
took that spelling..........(Back in 1900's they were all
crazy about the English??)

Anyway, hope this might help

regards

Cameron Cudahy
Re: John Cuddihy

I have a copy of a letter, written by a John Cuddihy, to his son, Patrick, the letter is dated Dec. 5, l857, from Callan,
and signed John Cudahy...among other things, it states that
he, the father has no money, a sister, Margaret? is a nun...
in Philadelphia....some of the letter is unreadable.
Paul.
