i am a Cuddihy as well but my great grandfather left ireland in the 1850's i believe. It is very hard to pinpoint where he was born and what happened to him before he arrvie din Nfld. However in my research I did come across a Cuddihy who died in WW1 at the Battle of the Somme. You should be able to find that record somewhere.

This is helpful ...at my father's baptism in Montreal in 1911 there was a Mrs M Holland who was a sponsor. The Catherine Cuddihy you mention who was married in 1869 and as my grandfather Thomas was born in 1871, her children and Thomas my grandfather might have been cousins. And her son when married might have been connected to my grandfather, hence his wife, catherine's daughter in law, "Mrs M. Holland" could have been the aforementioned sponsor.Catherine is mentioned in her father Michael's will and her mother's will which is available on line through Newfoundland gen web.She had a number of siblings who remained in Newfoundland.I amstill unable to determine the exact relation of Catherine's father Michael to my great grandfather Thomas.

Hi, I do not have a lot of information on the Cuddihy's of Montreal but the one line I have on this family is that Catherine married John Holland on the 13 of Nov. 1869 at Notre-Dame in Montreal. Her father was listed as Michael Cuddihy (mason) and the mother was listed as Catherine Cooney.

I believe Catherine was the daughter rof Michael and Catherine of Nfld. but no idea what relation those cuddihys were to mine. do you have any information that would be helpful?

My research shows a John Cuddihy and a Catherine O'Brien having a son (unnamed) in Canandaigua, New York on November 30, 1900. My great grandfather is James Cuddihy, brother of the above John Cuddihy, and James' obit (in the Geneva Daily Times 12 February 1907) says that, "Deceased [James] was a nephew of the late Dennis English (pastor of St. Mary's Church in Canandaigua), which means that John Cuddihy was also a nephew of Dennis English (perhaps a relative of John English?). Although you show a Catherine Brien, your witness' name is O'Brien. Lots of coincidences????

Do you by any chance have any additional information on John Cuddihy (or his family from Kilmore)?

In responce:My grandfather Michael Joseph Cuddihy left Ireland in the early 1920?Apparently he tried to buy a ticket on the titanic but didn't have enough money. As far as I know he landed in Nova Scotia. My father William Michael was his only child. He married Isabelle Irene Kilkenny from Broomhill Manitoba and they settled in Toronto .I never knew my grandfather he died many years before I was born.I'm looking for family he left behind in Ireland ,apparently he had a sister who worked or was a patient in a mental hospital that is all the information I've been able to find .Please help if you can...Michaels parents were Michael Joseph Cuddihy and Bridget Keefe ,I believe he was born in March around the 17th in waterford county My dad seems to think he might have had a brother, but also thinks that brother died in the first war.

They had sons named Bennett Yarrow Ryan, Billy, and Leicester, and daughters named Ruthie and Jane. Does anyone know where Robert J. Cuddihy's family came from or anything about them? What about Emma Frances Bennett's or where they were from? I have a photograph of Bennett with his wife and baby, her grandparents and his grandparents, R.J. and Emma. I have heard that photos of R.J. are fairly rare.

Thank you for contacting me.
I haven't had any luck re more information on John Cuddihy & Catherine O'Brien except that I did notice a deed in the Registry of Deeds, Dublin - I did not take down the date & have lost the index number - but it was that John Cuddihy, Kilmore, had a sister a nun & she had taken him to court about money - I am only telling you this from memory but it confirmed to me that there had been Cuddihy's at Kilmore as nobody descended from the O'Brien side which I am interested in had any knowledge of the O'Brien/Cuddihy marriage.
With Irish surnames there were a lot of inconsistencies - it just makes our research more challenging!
Thank you for contacting me, keep in touch if you find anything & I will continue to try & find the family.

Dear Bridget,

Your reply was a surprise and greatly appreciated. I have considerable detail regarding my Crane/Crehan family as they tie in with the Cuddihy family. The tie-in comes through Denis and Anne Cuddy/Cuddihy who were the parents of my great-grandmother, Mary Cuddihy born 1846 in Ireland. Denis and Anne were both born in Ireland in 1816.

I would be more than happy to share this information with you. Please contact me directly at my e-mail address which is tccrane@peoplepc.com.

God bless,

Tom Crane

I am a direct decendent of a John Cuddihy (married to Margaret Shannon) and immigrated in 1864 from Ireland. My family was involved in mining in the Upper Pennisula (Houghton) of Michigan during the time frame that you've asked about. John Cuddihy is buried in Hancock, MI as well as his wife. Their daughter, Bridget is my namesake and stayed in the U.P. after her husband's mining death in 1906 but is buried in Detroit. She had 4 children, one of which is my great grandfather. I have a wealth of info about their desendents if you are interested. I am searching for more of the ties to Ireland as they run deep and we do not have all of the pieces to the puzzle. Thanks for your post! Bridget

Chris, I have been reading CUDDY messages, but decided
since CUDDIHY was used by some in the past I would try this. Michael CUDDY was born about 1800. Cannot find any
written indications as to location. My greataunts said they were cousins to people I thought were friends. They said relationship was through Michael Cuddy, but it was in Ireland.
The "cousins" descended from Elizabeth DOYLE from Kilkenny, Paulston RC parish. Her mother was Margaret CUDDIHY, but sometimes it was recorded CUDDY. In 1837,
Margaret CUDDIHY married Owen DOYLE from Lower Grange, Goresbridge. They had 3 children: Mary, Patrick and Elizabeth. Do you know where in Kilkenny your ancestors were? Thanks, Margaret
