I have been doing research on the Cuellar surname for some
time.My findings on the name are what the name means which depends on what source you look up.It could come
from an old Roman word collis which means foot hills,if that is true then Cuellar is the name of a thing. The place where the present town of Villa De Cuellar sits was once an
old Roman fort during the Roman occupation, but it dates back to the bronze age.Other historians identify the name
Cuellar having to do with equus, roman for horses. It does not
translate into "collar" which some anglo historians claim it
means.Later the site became known as Villa De Cuellar, and
was the home of many Royal families in the middle ages.People living there during the crusades established themselfs in the service of the kings, and were either knighted or given coat of arms and thus then they moved to other regions, they were identified example; Juan De Cuellar, which Identified that person as being "from" Cuellar. Some came with Columbus in his first voyage to americas, then with Cortez in the Conquista.Others migrated to New Spain, now Mexico, and most of us are descended from those people.I would like to compare notes with anyone who has more information,or different information.I would also like to know if
there are more family linages other then the Lizarraras y Cuellar tree.I dont find mines there, since I carry that name,I would like to find a link somewhere.Contact me at
