Codiak, After looking at your other post, I've figured out who your Mary Cuffe was (the daughter of Michael Cuffe and Mary Anne Webb. She was born closer to 1891: Her emigration ship was the S.S. Caronia, arriving in NYC on 9/20/1911. She is listed as 21 years old on her emigration record and the cousin of Margaret Devine. Your Cuffes were from the townland of Bishopstown in the district of Lismore (not from Lismore town itself). So when you go to Ireland, go to the townland of Bishopstown to see if there are any Cuffes still there (or even Devines). If you want to talk more in detail contact me at billandrae@comcast.net. Also, my ancestors are Cuffes from Tallow, close to Bishopstown. I am interested in finding out if there is a blood relationship between the two lines of Cuffes (or other lines). If you are interested in genealogical DNA testing please let me know. All the best, Bill Dennehy

Betty, Hi. Sorry but my William Cuffe was from Tallow, County Waterford. If your brother is 88, best to get his DNA while you still have a shot. Order it for him (familytreedna.com) and then just have him swab the inside of his mouth. Nothing to it...I'm not sure of the exact number but around 10 different Cuffe family lines have already taken the DNA test and so it is becoming increasingly possible to find a relative thru this method. The more the better for everyone, now and in the future. All the best... Bill

Dear Bill,
Is your William Cuffe from either Lissaneagh or Fortland, Co Sligo? My only brother is 88 yrs and I don't think he would get his DNA done. I have just recently found I have 1st cousins living in the Leeds, Eng. area but am still trying to find their addresses.
I am getting desperate to find the family of William at Lissaneagh C 1700's. Have photos of this old home, and was honoured to be able to look over the buildings in 1995. Regards Betty.

Hello Tricia,

I am sorry to say you have the wrong family here. The Frances Thornhill you mention is a few generations prior to Henry and Catherine (my gggg grandparents). But, yes, the Frances of the earlier generation did marry Capt John Welstead. The children of Catherine and Henry included Edward (the heir), my ggg grandmother, Mary Ann (who married Rev. B. B, Johnson), Sarah, who married William Ware (a neighbouring family), Caroline Catherine, and other boys.

Kind regards,

Jane Hills

The Mitchelstown Thornhill's were very distantly related, going back to the 1600's.

My ancestor Elizabeth Dudley (nee Thornhill) had seven children in Mitchelstown Co Cork in the 1830s and 1840s. I can't find her marriage or birth. She called her eldest daughter Frances.
I wonder if it is possible that she is one of the daughters of Henry Badham-Thornhill and his wife Catherine O'Dell. He is supposed to have had several daughters before the birth of his heir Edward. I understand that the eldest daughter married Capt. John Welstead. Any help would be appreciated.
Tricia Hilder

The marriage settlement was in 1792, therefore she was quite an old bride!. There is mention in "The Burton Papers" Carlow Library, to Lucy Cuffe and a John Crampton, so maybe she was married before. By the way, these papers are on the Internet, interesting reading for my Burton family. Also Lucy's mother was my ancestress, (Sophia Badham)

Jane Hills

Edmond, Hi. Could you tell me if you know the connection between your Bishopstown Cuffe family and the John Cuffe family also from Bishopstown? John Cuffe was born abt 1826 and married Ellen Malone (b. abt 1831 Glentaune, Cappoquin.) They had at least the following children: John, Daniel, Francis and Michael. They emigrated to NYC.
Also, could you tell me what relationship, if any, did the Bishoptown Cuffes have to the Ballyduff and Tallow Cuffes? Thxs. Bill Dennehy

Does anyone have information on Michael Cuffe born in 1821? He lived the majority of his life in Upper Fairfield, Ballina Mayo, and died there in 1911. He was my gg-grandfather and I have quite a bit of information on him from 1864 forward, but nothing previous to that date. He was married to Mary Davis, who died in 1893.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Colleen Cuff

I have quite a bit of information on this family, my husband's grandmother was Jessie Cuffe Muething. I have traced this family back to Italy. The original surname spelling was Ciuffi.
Hi Tim,

Yes its been a while!! Thanks for the correction. I haven't done any work on the Power family for a while. We were hoping to go to Cappoquin to see the family last year but life took over.
My email may have changed but it is now joblethyn@sky.com
Web page Blethyn.com.
Last year I got in touch with Angela Power, Ellen Cuffe's grandaugther living in Dublin. If you are going to Dublin let me know. I could forward her your details as she may like to contact you.

Jo

Hello Bill and Jo,

Jo, I'm sorry we've lost touch these many years.
One quick correction: Walter Power(s) born 12 Aug 1906, died in Manhattan, New York on 21 Aug 1981 (not Middletown, as recorded).
I'm hoping to spend this summer doing some research into the Power family; specifically why my grandfather (the aforementioned Walter) decided to go by the name "Powers," when his name was clearly "Power," absent the "s."
If you have any insights, I'd be happy to hear of them.
I'll keep you posted on my research.

With kind regards,
Tim Powers

There are only two I ever heard mention of, Maurice & Margeret. Neither married, both emmigrated to the US and died in 1960 & 1970 respectively. He died in 1975. The other two siblings Johanna & Mary I have not been able to trace.

Regards for now,
Edmond Fogarty

Jo Bethyn,
My mother is Sióbháin (Johanna) Cuffe (Fogarty). Her Father was William Cuffe, a grandson of Maurice. Maurice Died on the 1st April 1911 aged 92. His wife Johanna died 22 Jan 1889. His son Michael died the previous year (1910) as a result of a fall from a horse. He would have been a brother of Ellen. Maurice's fathers name was Michael; he was born in 1770 and died in 1848. His wife’s name was Margaret; she out-lived him by 21 and died in 1869. I have copies of death certificates for all of the above except for the original Michael. As his death was towards the end of the Great Famine 1846 -48, there is possibly no official record but I have found the headstone. State registration of births, marriages and deaths was not required in IRL before 1860. Before that date the only comprehensive church records are for members of the established church (COI). Irish Census records existed from the 1830’s, however a quantity of these were pulped by the authorities during WW1 for paper. Whatever records survived were destroyed by fire in the Four Courts during the Civil War. Partial records exist for the 1901 census and I have a copy for the Cuffe Family Bishopstown. The 1911 Irish Census is now online at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/.
Regards

Edmond.
